Crimson Bound: guest post + giveaway

Crimson Bound: guest post + giveaway

Over the years, I’ve found myself disappointed by many YA fairy tale retellings. I’m always drawn to them, and yet most of them don’t provide the satisfaction I’m looking for. Rosamund Hodge’s gorgeous books, however, are the few exceptions–both of them take inspiration from fairy tales, but have their own unique twist on the stories we’re so familiar with. I find myself utterly captivated when I’m immersed in these books, swept away by the romance, the lush prose, and the interplay of darkness and lightness in the unforgettable characters. In Cruel Beauty, the author reimagined the stories of Beauty and the Beast, Bluebeard, and Cupid and Psyche. In her latest book Crimson Bound, she draws her influence from two other very different fairy tales. As part of the blog tour we’re hosting for the book, Rosamund is with us today to tell us more about her dark, dark influences. They… Read more »

None of the Above: guest post + box of Harper ARCs giveaway

None of the Above: guest post + box of Harper ARCs giveaway

I’m asked to host a fair number of blog tours, and I almost always turn them down. It’s truly a labor of love, because it takes so much time and effort if you want to do justice to the book that’s being featured. When None of the Above came across my desk, however, I couldn’t say no. It’s a compelling story about a girl named Kristin whose life is like any other teenager’s, until one night as she and her boyfriend are becoming intimate, she discovers that something doesn’t feel right. When she goes to the doctor, she finds out that she is intersex, a condition that so many people seem to know so little about–myself included. In telling us Kristin’s story, I.W. Gregorio puts a spotlight on underrepresented members of our society; as Kristin learns about intersex, we do too. It’s important to understand the physical and psychological nuances… Read more »

Crimson Bound: Blog Tour Sign-Up

If you’re a lover of fairy tale retellings and gorgeus, atmospheric writing, the next tour we’re hosting may be right up your alley! We host a handful of tours each year for authors or books we love, and the first one for 2015 will be Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge. When the author asked if I’d consider doing this, I didn’t hesitate for a second, since I enjoyed the dark romance of Cruel Beauty so much. Tour Details Rosamund is putting together some terrific guest posts (including some flash fiction pieces!) that I’m pretty excited about. Our goal with these tours is always to help bring new audiences to an author’s work, but also to enhance the experience for existing fans, so you can be sure that these pieces are going to be memorable and special. We’re working on the specifics of the tour, but the basic details are as… Read more »

This Shattered World: Meet the Characters + giveaway

This Shattered World: Meet the Characters + giveaway

If you’re a fan of Tarver and Lilac from These Broken Stars, I don’t even know how to explain how much you’re going to love the new characters in This Shattered World! This companion story set in the same universe follows the awesome Jubilee Chase and the guy she absolutely, positively should not get involved with, Flynn Cormac. And, well…you know how that goes. ;) I thought Tarver was going to be hard to live up to, but Flynn’s going to win you over fast–but not as fast as Jubilee does, because she’s kickass from page 1. I have a serious girl crush on her and I’m not afraid to admit it. There is so much to say about how the Starbound universe has deepened and expanded in this second book, but the characters are a great place to introduce you to this fantastic story. To kick off the official… Read more »

Foodie Tour of NYC + All Four Stars giveaway

Foodie Tour of NYC + All Four Stars giveaway

When I finished All Four Stars by Tara Dairman, I was thoroughly charmed–and thoroughly HUNGRY! This sweet, funny middle grade story of an eleven-year-old girl who becomes a restaurant critic in New York is, as my friend karen says, “surprisingly plausible,” as well as a must-read for anyone who has an appreciation for food. Kim says the author pretty much gives us a global culinary tour and inspired wanderlust in her as well. The madcap climax of the book centers around a place called Classy Cakes, which sounds like a dream for those of us with a sweet tooth. But I also loved that the story features so many cuisines from different countries, and in turn, so many different diverse characters and cultures as well. Gladys is a plucky heroine I wish I knew in real life, because I’m sure we’d have a grand time eating our way around the… Read more »
