The Stolen Moon: Review

The Stolen Moon: Review

I’m so glad I started the new year off right by reading The Stolen Moon. I’ve been eagerly anticipating this sequel ever since I devoured its predecessor, The Lost Planet, in one sitting last January. Well, I loved this installment even more. There are scenes of breathtaking action, as well as heart aching tenderness, against the backdrop of an ever expanding and politically complex universe. More please and thank you! We pick up not long after where we left Chase safely onboard the starship Kuyddestor and reunited with his sister Lilli. With still no memory of his old life, his parents, or how he got into this predicament, there are still plenty of answers to pursue. And as it turns out new danger is lurking just out of sight. As a reader who is largely driven by characters and how much I do or don’t connect with them this book was… Read more »

Trial by Fire: guest post + giveaway

Trial by Fire: guest post + giveaway

I love paranormal romances, but it’s rare to find one that hits all the right spots in combining fantastic magic-wielding, fun action scenes, nuanced characters with agency, and swoony romance. Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini arrowed right into the bulls-eye, however, and Lily Proctor’s development from an allergy-ridden, insecure klutz into a young woman who embraces incredible power in an alternate universe is handled with just the right touch. Lily is so painfully awkward in the beginning–and so obviously in love with a guy who doesn’t appreciate her–that I was nervous about whether the transition would feel right, but I loved the way she comes into her own. This book also hit on two of my GoodReads shelves that don’t see nearly enough action: the hilarious books shelf and the crush-worthy boys shelf! That’s right, a guy you wanna make out with AND a story that keeps you laughing…. Read more »

On Revenge: Mortal Danger tour post + giveaway

We’ve all been wronged. Maybe even grievously wronged. But how many of us seek justice? Mortal Danger is the story of a girl who does just that, and as part of the book’s blog tour, we’re pleased to welcome author Ann Aguirre back to The Midnight Garden as she tells us the best revenge story she’s ever heard.  Fact or fiction? You decide! The Best Revenge Story Ever by Ann Aguirre I have a friend. Let’s call her Lucy. In college, Lucy dated around a lot. At one point, she was dating five guys simultaneously. But they all knew she wasn’t exclusive with anyone, so it wasn’t shady. She had been unpopular in high school, so college was a whole new frontier, where none of the labels carried over. So she was having a blast her freshman year and who could blame her? By her sophomore year, she was tired… Read more »

Scarlet: review & giveaway

Scarlet: review & giveaway

I read the first in the Lunar Chronicles, Cinder, just last week, and was enamored with Marissa Meyer’s imaginative and wholly original take on the Cinderella fairy tale (seriously, who gets sci-fi/fantasy with cyborgs and aliens and magic powers from that? SOMEONE AWESOME, obviously), and very much enjoyed the depth and humor she infused into the characters. But, there was still something missing for me. Some indefinable piece that could bump it up from, “wow, this is really great” to, “TELL ME MORE. IMMEDIATELY.” I’m pleased to tell you, my friends, Scarlet is that missing piece . With its higher stakes, intense action, and one hell of a big, (so hot it might be) bad (for your heart) Wolf, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The sequel picks up right where Cinder left off, but from Scarlet’s point of view. She, as you might have imagined, is a red-headed,… Read more »
