The Book Thief Readalong: Week Four

The Book Thief Readalong: Week Four

Welcome to the final week of our readalong of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, which each of us has read for the first time in preparation for the upcoming film. We’ve had somewhat mixed feelings about the book overall, but we’ve come to appreciate some of the things our fellow readers have been raving about, and the experience of reading together and discussing with you has certainly been enjoyable.       The Book Thief Readalong: Week Four Pages 404 – end Wendy: I would like to taste a Kipferl cookie. It seems like it would be good dipped in cocoa. I am writing this right after jumping in on a middle grade lit chat that was all about book food, so I’m a little obsessed.  Kate: When I was a kid I wanted to open a restaurant where I would only sell cookies and coke. And guess… Read more »

The Book Thief Readalong: Week Three

Hello, hello! Welcome to the third week of our readalong of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, which we’re all reading together for the first time here on the blog. Let’s get right to the discussion. The Book Thief Readalong: Week Three Pages 304 – 403 (Part 8) Kate:I switched to the audio version of the book this week.  It is So. Much. Better.  The bolded bits aren’t as intrusive; they’re more like an aside from the narrator.  Allan Corduner makes a lot of the things that bothered me on the page more palatable in this format. Wendy: I mentioned last week that Bonnie said it was better! I should have listened to her and switched over, too. K: I’ve never really gotten into audios. I just don’t think it would be the same. I think the voice in my head would get offended. But I’m glad it’s made it… Read more »

The Book Thief Readalong: Week Two

Welcome to The Book Thief Readalong, Week Two! This week we’ve read to page 303, or Part 6. We went nuts with the commentary this week, so we’re just going to get right into it. SO MUCH TO DISCUSS. Let us know what you thought of this week’s chapters in the comments below–we loved the discussion with you all from last week! —————————————————- The Book Thief Readalong: Week Two Pages 124 – 303 (Part 6)  Wendy: You guys may already know this from my reading status update or #TBTreadalong tweets, but I feel so much better about the book now. I LOVED Part Four. I basically love everything that has to do with Hans Hubermann and Max and Ilsa Hermann. I still have issues with some of the storytelling style, but I’m relieved that I’m finally starting to enjoy this more.   K: It is getting easier to read, thank gosh. I… Read more »

The Book Thief Readalong: Week One

With the film adaptation of Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief on its way in November, we’re reading the book together this month. We’re reading it for the first time, and we invite you to join us for the readalong! Re-readers are also welcome, as long as you’re patient with our never-ending questions. This week we’re reading to page 123, or Part 3. Somewhat surprisingly, K, Kate, and I all have somewhat conflicting feelings about the book so far. How about you? Let us know in the comments below, we’ll be around to respond to your reactions later in the day as well. —————————————————- The Book Thief Readalong: Week One Pages 1 – 123 (Part 3) Wendy: All right, so far this is intriguing, but I have to say that I think I picked a stopping point that came too soon. At page 123 the story still seems to be setting… Read more »
