Are you may have heard, I put out a call for applicants for Midnight Garden reviewers last month. Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to send us a note of interest! We’re very excited to have two new writers starting soon, which means that hopefully the barren wasteland that you occasionally wandered into on the blog this summer won’t be happening again. There are so many books that deserve attention, and additional reviewers means that we’ll not only be able to review more books, but I will also have more time to devote to features, side projects, and tours. Without further ado–please say hello to Layla and Peyton! We’ve gotten to know Layla this year because she’s a frequent visitor to our blog, and it quickly became apparent that she’s definitely a kindred spirit. We’ve loved her thoughtful observations, open-mindedness, and eclectic reading tastes through many… Read more »

Hello friends! We have to apologize for being a bit quiet around here recently. Between trips and jobs and such, we’ve been a little busy offline, but we haven’t forgotten you! We have a box of summer-themed books to give away, but first, some Midnight Garden news and updates. Here’s what’s been keeping us busy: Kate and I did a fun podcast with Matt Debenham from What Are You Reading? We chat about balancing our responsibilities as bloggers, sex in YA, middle grade books and movies, and sooo much more. Matt owns a gorgeous house (that used to be a church) on Prince Edward Island as well, so Anne fans can listen to my trying to be cool while internally jumping up and down with excitement. I just got back from Portland, and I can’t wait to share some of the bookish adventures I experienced. Kim has started working in… Read more »
Hope you all are having a lovely holiday season! Last Friday, Kate and Tonya and I took a little break from the hustle and bustle as we met up for a Midnight Garden Christmas Tea, where there was much bookish discussion and merriment. Over tiny sandwiches and pastries and tea, we chatted about the books we’re currently reading as a harpist played in the background. The hand-painted china was SO pretty (Kate said it was like fairy china) and I dearly wanted to take the cunning little silver spoons home. We also exchanged some presents. Do you give bookish gifts? I picked special ones for each of my ladies. I got Kate Tell the Wolves I’m Home because I want to make her cry; I got K Soulless because she couldn’t be with us for our tea, so she can enjoy the werewolves having tea with Victorian ladies instead; and… Read more »
Notice anything new at The Midnight Garden? We’ve been thinking about moving to WordPress for ages, and we finally did it! About the Header We are so happy with our lovely new custom header, which went through a lot of concept ideas and sketches with our illustrator until we settled on this design. It was important to us that the imagery captured our deep love for books, as well to set a certain tone for the blog. Here are some fun facts about the process, which I thought you might enjoy: We asked that the book the girl is reading to be made thicker. There were four different colors for the book. We made the girl take her shoes off. (Um–K wanted her to be naked, actually.) The bird spying over her shoulder changed positions at least three times. We reluctantly got rid of a very clever fox that I… Read more »
Hello friends! We’re very pleased to announce we have a new contributing writer joining us at The Midnight Garden Kate zips through books as fast as I do and shares my love of YA scifi, gruesome crime thrillers, and sexy romances. She’s one of the few people I can text at four in the morning because I need to DISCUSS a book I just finished–and the awesome thing is, she’s often awake to text me back. After knowing each other for about a year, we recently discovered that we have 90% book compatibility, which is kind of amazing. But at the same time, I’m excited that she’s joining us because she brings a fresh perspective and voice to the blog, and is certainly going to be keeping us on our toes. Without further ado, here’s a little more about Kate in her own words. Please help us welcome her to… Read more »
Hi everybody! Things have been a little quiet around here lately, as some offline things have kept both K. and me a little busy. Some good stuff has been going on, though–a little nod from Forbes Magazine, we’re cooking up some fun author guest posts for November, and most importantly, we’ve taken on a new reviewer! I can’t remember exactly how I first met Tonya on GoodReads, but I know that over the last year or so, we’ve bonded over our love of many books. Her reviews are always insightful and thought-provoking, and K. and I are both very pleased to have her as a contributing writer here on the blog. You’ll find out a little more about Tonya in her own words below, and you’ll be reading her first review very soon. In the meantime, I hope you’ll join us in giving her a warm welcome. Meet Tonya, Our… Read more »
Hi everyone! Things are a bit nutty right now since I’m on travel at the moment, but I wanted to post a quick update. First of all, the lovely Missie over at The Unread Reader invited me to do a guest post on her blog. Check out her site today if you’re curious what I get up to When I’m Not Reading! There may or may not be talk of strawberry tarts and James Bond. Ahem. We also have oodles of fun Valentine’s stuff coming up for The Midnight Garden. Do you have a bookish valentine to buy for? Curious about the novels your favorite YA authors might find romantic? You’ll find that here and more over the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!
