Life and Death: Review Discussion

Life and Death: Review Discussion

Well, I certainly never thought I’d be here: having a review discussion on a gender swapped version of Twilight. Yet here we are. This is the route Stephenie Meyer chose to go in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the original book. Her goal? To prove that the original book is not sexist. That it’s not the fact that Bella is girl that makes her so helpless in that narrative, but that she is a human among supernatural creatures. Did she succeed in her goal? Read on to find out what Layla and I thought! Kim:  I was a huge, huge fan of the series back in the day. (Here’s a fun Throwback Thursday for you of when I was reading Twilight for the very first time back in college). I was way into it. I was an active member of the forums on the Twilight Lexicon, and I was there… Read more »

The Falconer: Review Discussion

The Falconer: Review Discussion

Being the fantasy loving gals that we are, Kate and I both devoured this one last month. And now here we are to bring our thoughts to you! I’m not normally a huge fan of steampunk or faery stories, but Kate likes both. We ended up enjoying this one just the same, though. Intriguing! Do join us as we discuss the reasons why.     Kim: I rather enjoyed this one. I don’t often go for steampunk, and I really don’t care for faery stories so the fact that I liked this as much as I did should go to show for something. I mean, there are mechanical spiders that will stitch you up. That’s fucking awesome. Kate: I tend to like steampunk as a general rule–not, like, the cosplay or whatever, because it seems exhausting, but I love being able to read historically-set novels that can contain modern… Read more »

The Fault in Our Stars: film discussion

The Fault in Our Stars: film discussion

All right, how many people cried at the theater this weekend? Kate and Wendy did, because we both went to see Edge of Tomorrow. Kidding, kidding–that part is true, but we’re here to talk about the film adaptation of The Fault in Our Stars, based on the crazily popular novel by John Green. Quick background: Kate has read the book and really liked it, even though she felt she’d been emotionally manipulated; Wendy has thus far resisted all John Green novels and ultimately decided to go into the movie fresh. Some spoilers are inevitable, so proceed at your own risk. So here’s what we thought–be sure and let us know your reaction to the movie, or if you’re planning on seeing it!     Wendy: I admit it: I cried. I was doing pretty well and thinking to myself, “Okay, this isn’t so bad,” and then that scene in the… Read more »

Divergent: Film Discussion

Divergent: Film Discussion

Did you catch Divergent in theaters this weekend? Kate and Wendy saw it opening day, and after the disaster that was Vampire Academy, we were very excited that we both ended up enjoying this one! Quick background: Wendy really liked the first book, though Kate was more middling about it. (Here’s Wendy’s Divergent review if you’re curious.) We both also chose not to refresh our memories with a reread to see how the film held up if we weren’t clear on as many details. Spoilers abound for book and film, so read on at your own risk! Wendy: Going into all such films, I have two questions: how good is this as an adaptation? How good is this as a film that stands on its own? I’m just going to say it: I think the Divergent film adaptation was better than both The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. As books,… Read more »

Alienated: Review Discussion + Giveaway

Alienated: Review Discussion + Giveaway

Hi all! Since Kate and Wendy had so much fun with the discussion review for Secret, we’re doing it again with Alienated! Unlike Secret, though, our feelings turned out rather mixed. A surprise to all three of us since almost everyone we know seems to love it. Come along as we discuss! ~ Kim Kim: Oh man, I was so sure I was going to love this. I’d been eagerly anticipating this book for months. I’m a huge fan of the “emotionally closed off/stoic partner gently breaks down through love” thing, as well as paranormal romance. Unfortunately, there was a lot that was just…off with Alienated. Wendy: Baa baa black sheep. I’m gently butting the two of you in our pen. Kate: Yeah… It wasn’t what I’d expected, based on the blurb. Kim: To start off with, I really didn’t care for either main character. I actually like that Cara… Read more »

Secret (Elemental #4): review discussion

Secret (Elemental #4): review discussion

Hi everyone! Since Kate and I are both big fans of the Elemental series, we decided it’d be fun to do a joint review discussion for Secret, the latest installment. Please be aware that there will be spoilers for this series in our chat, although we won’t give away any major plot points in this particular book. Let’s begin!   Wendy: Brigid sure doesn’t mess around. The book stars off with a debriefing/interrogation scene, and then bam! There’s an unexpected event and we’re immediately plunged into the action. It’s great how the prologue serves as both a recap and to jolt you into feeling like you’re in this world again. Kate: I thought the recap aspects, in particular, were very well done.  And what I like about the Unexpected Event was how bad-ass and scary Silver was in the last book, you know?  And how I can feel sorry for… Read more »
