Rebel Belle: hummingbird cake recipe + giveaway

Rebel Belle: hummingbird cake recipe + giveaway

Rebel Belle goes down like a glass of cool, sweet tea on a hot summer’s day. As a big fan of both Hex Hall and School Spirits, I’m always excited when I hear there’s a new Rachel Hawkins book on the horizon, and this freaking cover had me panting with excitement. SO pretty! And full of potential kickassery! When Tonya sent me her copy from YAllFest, I was giddy with joy. You’ll be happy to know that the contents are just as fun as the packaging. The book starts out with Harper Price, southern belle, all gussied up at a school dance–only to find that some guy has passed on his not-of-this-earth abilities to her after she witnesses his death in the girls’ bathroom. Eventually she finds out that she’s charged with protecting David Stark, a former childhood friend, but the problem is, David’s mission in life seems to… Read more »

Cameron Post’s Strawberry Pretzel Salad

Cameron Post’s Strawberry Pretzel Salad

One of my favorite books last year was Emily Danforth’s The Miseducation of Cameron Post. It’s a coming of age story that’s great to read in the summer because the beginning so perfectly captures the lazy mood of the season.   If you’ve read the book, you know there’s plenty of ice cream and pop, along with an incredible-sounding dessert I’d never heard of before: strawberry pretzel salad! Apparently this was a big thing back in the day, and I couldn’t wait to try it, especially after reading Epic Reads’ post. I decided to make mine in a combination of mini jars and a smaller baking dish, so we had big slices as well as little portable desserts. Download the recipe card for Strawberry Pretzel Salad if you’d like to try it! It’s modified slightly from Epic Reads’, though you can find a lot of other recipes and methods out… Read more »

DUALED Author Elsie Chapman’s Thankgiving Recipe

Welcome to Day Two of our Debut Authors Celebration!  We’re thankful that publishers take a chance on new talent, and this week we’re featuring three authors whose 2013 debuts we’re anticipating. One of the books I’m really excited about for 2013 is Dualed, a city in which every person has an alternate–but only one will live beyond his or her twentieth birthday. Fifteen-year-old West only has one month to hunt down her alt to ensure her survival, but a tragic mistake shakes her confidence and makes her question the choices she’s made. This action-packed adventure sounds like a lot of fun, and I hear there’s an “unexpected romance” as well! Dualed will be released on February 26th, 2013. Author Elsie Chapman joins us on the blog today to share her favorite Thanksgiving memory and recipe. ~ Wendy Elsie Chapman’s Thanksgiving Memory As a second generation Chinese Canadian growing up in a… Read more »

Every Day: review & giveaway (plus bonus recipe!)

Every Day: review & giveaway (plus bonus recipe!)

Every Day by David Levithan What makes us fall in love–and what makes us who we are? Those are the questions at the heart of this novel, which tells a thoughtful, touching story that will surprise readers with its sentient literary style and gentle feeling. Everyone longs for human connection, but 16-year-old A.’s search for it seems to be a losing proposition. Every day, for as long as he can remember, he wakes up in a different body: sometimes as a girl, sometimes with a different ethnicity, sometimes with a different sexual orientation. He’s long recognized the futility of trying to create lasting relationships, but everything changes when he meets Rhiannon, a girl who makes him want things he’s never thought possible. This story reminds me of one of my favorite TNG episodes with a similar concept, and A. also follows a sort of prime directive in his self-imposed policy… Read more »

Preloved Review & Pink Sugared Popcorn!

Preloved Review & Pink Sugared Popcorn!

Preloved by Shirley Marr I had a horrible sensation in my stomach only because, like, a billion things could go wrong when you try to tell a girl that her Eighties-flavoured boyfriend from a past life was trying to hook back up with her.Preloved is the story of 16-year-old Amy Lee, a girl who lives in the fictional Australian town of Middlemore with her Chinese mother. On her school’s Eighties Theme Day, she’s dressed up as Buttercup from The Princess Bride and battling her love/hate relationship with her best friend Rebecca when she accidentally stumbles upon a silver locket with a picture of a boy from the 80s inside. Her life gets complicated when the boy’s ghost appears and begins to haunt her–but not for the usual reasons you might expect. First of all, Logan wears his collar popped. And he’s persistent. And he’s annoying. But as Amy grows closer… Read more »
