Lady Renegades Blog Tour: Rachel Hawkins on Funny YA

Lady Renegades Blog Tour: Rachel Hawkins on Funny YA

Rachel Hawkins is a long-time favorite of mine. Her books feel so funny and fresh, and her current Rebel Belle series features a girl who suddenly discovers supernatural powers that allow her to be a kickass guardian–but who was also raised to be a genteel southern belle. To complicate things further, the person she’s supposed to protect is her cute nemesis-turned-boyfriend David, who’s gone on the run and won’t let her protect him. What’s a girl to do? And will the aunts pack enough cookies for her road trip to find him? To celebrate the release of the last book of the series, we’re pleased to welcome Rachel Hawkins to blog today as part of the Lady Renegades tour! She’s here to talk about humor in young adult books, which came about in a roundabout way from a tweet from Rachel that sparked a conversation about why funny YA can… Read more »

Rebel Belle: hummingbird cake recipe + giveaway

Rebel Belle: hummingbird cake recipe + giveaway

Rebel Belle goes down like a glass of cool, sweet tea on a hot summer’s day. As a big fan of both Hex Hall and School Spirits, I’m always excited when I hear there’s a new Rachel Hawkins book on the horizon, and this freaking cover had me panting with excitement. SO pretty! And full of potential kickassery! When Tonya sent me her copy from YAllFest, I was giddy with joy. You’ll be happy to know that the contents are just as fun as the packaging. The book starts out with Harper Price, southern belle, all gussied up at a school dance–only to find that some guy has passed on his not-of-this-earth abilities to her after she witnesses his death in the girls’ bathroom. Eventually she finds out that she’s charged with protecting David Stark, a former childhood friend, but the problem is, David’s mission in life seems to… Read more »

School Spirits: review

School Spirits: review

Title:  School SpiritsAuthor: Rachel HawkinsRating:3.5 out of 5 starsRelease Date: May 14, 2013Publisher:Disney HyperionAge Group: YASource: gifted ARC Confession time: as someone who is still suffering from Archer withdrawals a big fan of the first two Hex Hall books, I was a little nervous about the prospect of a spinoff series. I’m happy to report that School Spirits finds the author back in fine form, this time with a character that was introduced in Spellbound. Remember the girl who talked to the Torin, the guy stuck in the mirror? Izzy Brannick is now fifteen, and her family has a long history as hunters of supernatural creatures. After she and her mom move to a new town in Mississippi, she starts to investigate mysterious hauntings at her high school under the guise of membership in the PMS (hah!) or Paranormal Management Society. The problem is, this case is more complicated than… Read more »

Demonglass (Hex Hall #2): review

Demonglass (Hex Hall #2): review

Demonglassby Rachel Hawkins I love a good paranormal book as much as the next person, but sometimes they take themselves too seriously. Enter Rachel Hawkins’ Hex Hall series, which follows the hilarious 16-year-old Sophie Mercer as she enters a reform school for supernatural kids. In the first installment, she learns that her father is a powerful warlock and that she’s inherited powers that are greatly coveted and feared–and tries to stop an attacking werewolf by yelling, “Bad dog!” I’m happy to report that Demonglass retains the same sarcastic humor and snappy, action-packed plot. Sophie is spending some time on her father’s estate to figure out whether she’s going to keep her awesome but pesky powers, and she’s still secretly pining for her missing demon-hunter crush, Archer Cross. Complicating matters is the revelation that cute-as-heck Cal has been betrothed to her for years (hey, they do things differently in the otherworld)… Read more »
