The Dream Thieves: review

The Dream Thieves: review

Title:The Dream Thieves (Raven Cycle #2)Author:Maggie StiefvaterRating: 5 out of 5 starsRelease Date: September 17th, 2013Publisher:ScholasticAge Group: YASource: ARC provided by the publisher This is the fantastical story of a boy tormented by nightmares that literally–literally!–become real. Set shortly after the events of The Raven Boys, the students of Aglionby Academy are still on the hunt for a legendary sleeping Welsh king. This time, while we continue to get perspectives from multiple POVs, the story primarily focuses on Ronan Lynch, a troubled and angry 17-year-old who pulls dark objects out of his dreams. But when ley lines running through their sleepy town are awakened, incredible power is unleashed, and none of the boys are prepared for the ordeal that awaits them. I liked The Raven Boys so much that I was nervous going into this one–but I think this book actually surpasses its predecessor, in no small part because of… Read more »

The Raven Boys: review & giveaway

The Raven Boys: review & giveaway

The Raven Boysby Maggie Stiefvater On a cold night every spring, sixteen-year-old Blue and her psychic mother wait in a churchyard for the dead to arrive. Her mother is usually the one who sees the spirits of people who will die within the next twelve months, but this year, Blue herself is startled by the sad, desperate sight of a boy named Gansey falling to his knees before her. “There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve, Blue. Either you’re his true love…or you killed him.” With those chilling words, Blue is caught up in a mystery she never expected involving the privileged Raven Boys from Aglionby Academy. She must guard her heart closely, however, because Blue’s always been told that she’s destined to kill her true love with a kiss. If Edgar Allan Poe had taught the boys of Dead Poets Society,… Read more »

Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls #3): review

Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls #3): review

Forever (Wolves of Mercy Falls #3)by Maggie Stiefvater This is probably the hardest review I’ve ever had to write. Shiver tears my heart in two every single time I read it. I felt Linger had its problems, mostly in the diluted narrative with the addition of two more POVs, but it was still extremely moving and I wanted to see what happened next. How strange it is, then, to read Forever and experience nothing even close to the emotions the first two books inspired. The Wolves of Mercy Falls series is love story told almost like a fairy tale. Aside from the bittersweet urgency of the romance, one of the most poignant elements in the books to me has been the wolves’ desperate struggle to hang onto their human selves. The knowledge that they will lose every shard of awareness of who they are moves me unbearably, and Sam and… Read more »

Blood Magic: review

Blood Magic: review

Blood Magicby Tessa Gratton I can pinpoint the exact moment when I stopped trying to enjoy Blood Magic. As the book began, I was uneasy about the wordiness of the prose, but this is the point at which I gave up: My heart beat faster, and I had to blink away the halo surrounding him. He was Mephistopheles, smiling and tempting me, his Dr. Faustus, to dance. If this crazy talk had happened even after a lifetime of knowing each other or under the influence of recreational drugs or if they were both 600 years old, that sentence still would have made me giggle. But this was, I believe, Silla’s third encounter with her new neighbor/instant boy crush Nick. She met him just a couple of days earlier when he witnessed her cutting her thumb in a cemetery and performing magic as if she’d been doing it all her life,… Read more »

The Scorpio Races: teaser blurb

The Scorpio Races: teaser blurb

Maggie Stiefvater has been keeping the subject of her fall release tightly under wraps, but Scholastic leaked a bit of information today through their librarian preview and on their website. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Shiver and Linger comes a brand-new, heart-stopping novel. With her trademark lyricism, Maggie Stiefvater turns to a new world, where a pair are swept up in a daring, dangerous race across a cliff–with more than just their lives at stake should they lose. The librarian preview is a little dry (Scholastic, we love you, but there’s a reason why editors usually work behind the scenes…), but the book info starts at the 11:15 mark if you click on the Young Adult preview. You’ll see the author herself talking about the book as well as some of the horse portraits she’s painted over the years. Still not much to go on, but this… Read more »
