A Tour of Shadows’ Australian Setting with Paula Weston + giveaway!

A Tour of Shadows’ Australian Setting with Paula Weston + giveaway!

Don’t you love a book that gives you a very certain sense of time and place? A strong setting always makes me feel as if I’m right there in the middle of the action along with the characters, and in Paula Weston’s Shadows, we’re thrust into a paranormal romance set in Australia…with angels. This was absolutely perfect, as I bought the book while I was in Sydney last summer after reading rave reviews from overseas friends, and as I read it I got to relive a little bit of my trip through reading the story.  As we kick off the official Shadows blog tour today, we asked Paula if she’d take us on a guided photographic tour of the book’s gorgeous setting. We’re so pleased that she agreed to share her pictures and writing process with us, and invite you to join us as we explore Gaby and Rafa’s world… Read more »

Kat Zhang’s Publication Story & Advice for Aspiring Writers + giveaway!

Kat Zhang’s Publication Story & Advice for Aspiring Writers + giveaway!

I love finding debut authors who are able to combine an original story and strong voice. Last year’s What’s Left of Me by Kat Zhang, the story of two souls inhabiting a single body, touched me with its thoughtful mood and lovely writing, and I’m so excited about seeing Addie and Eva’s story continue in its sequel. You probably already know that the author recently graduated from college, and it’s mind-boggling to think that she juggled writing, querying, revisions, and schoolwork all at once. As part of the official Once We Were blog tour, Kat is joining us today with a guest post on her journey to publication, as well as her advice to aspiring writers.  I want to know how she did it…don’t you? ~ Wendy My Journey to Publication by Kat Zhang I remember being seventeen, after finishing up my first book (not What’s Left of Me!), and… Read more »

Katja Millay on Her Journey from Self-Publishing to Traditional Publishing + Sea of Tranquility giveaway!

Katja Millay on Her Journey from Self-Publishing to Traditional Publishing + Sea of Tranquility giveaway!

We’re so pleased to welcome author Katja Millay to The Midnight Garden today! Both Tonya and I loved her debut novel The Sea of Tranquility (here’s Tonya’s review, which was apparently so persuasive that K bought the book over the weekend), which is a contemporary romance that has swept readers off their feet with its poignant story and unforgettable characters. What you may not know is that this book started out as a self-published novel, and that it’s turned out to have quite the Cinderella story. How does an independent book get picked up by a major publisher after just three weeks? Katja is generous enough to share the details of her astonishing story with us, but I suspect the answer to this particular question is pretty simple: The Sea of Tranquility is a great book. As publishing continues to evolve in our digital age, we’re very lucky that there… Read more »

Arclight Author Josin McQuein on the Origins of Her Unusual SciFi Thriller

Arclight Author Josin McQuein on the Origins of Her Unusual SciFi Thriller

As our readers probably know, Tonya and I both really enjoyed Arclight by Josin L. McQuein. (Read the blog review here!)  This scifi thriller is unusual because it combines traditional elements of the genre with a mood that sometimes veers a little closer to horror, which makes a fantastic combination. With the book just released in stores, and with the recent announcement that it’s been optioned by Imagine Entertainment for a film, we’re excited to have the author with us today chatting about the origins of her story. Josin has been a great friend to our blog, so please help us give her a warm welcome! ~ Wendy ———————————————– What is ARCLIGHT? by Josin L. McQuein I get that question a lot. The blurb on the back of the book is pretty open, and can be interpreted a dozen different ways. It’s an unusual mash-up of genres, but to really… Read more »

Rebecca Lim on Embracing the Flawed Heroine + Exile Giveaway!

Rebecca Lim on Embracing the Flawed Heroine + Exile Giveaway!

If you’re suffering from angel withdrawals now that the Unearthly series has ended, might I suggest the Mercy series by Australian author Rebecca Lim? It’s definitely among the more thoughtful angel books that I’ve read, and has a most unusual premise: Mercy has no memory of her life before, and wakes up in different human bodies that she must help.  One of the things I find unusual and fascinating about this series is the way Mercy hands out punishment to the wicked with such terrible justice. With the U.S. release of the second book Exile releasing this month, we’ve invited the author to share her experience in writing about divine beings who aren’t necessarily perfect. ~ Wendy ———————————————– Embracing the Flawed Heroine by Rebecca Lim It’s been tricky, writing about angels. Questions of faith and religion are intensely personal and when your heroine is a fallen angel, you need to… Read more »
