A Murderous Giveaway

A Murderous Giveaway

We have murder and mayhem on our minds today! We’re giving away 3 YA thrillers that were just released this month, along with the first two books in a series that will get you ready for the series ender. All the links will take you to GoodReads, where you can learn more about the book. Don’t Look Back by Jennifer Armentrout (ARC) Fans of this author’s are sure to love this one, especially since the romance is a pretty big part of the story. Isn’t that a creepy cover? You can practically hear the plinky plunky crazy music box music when you look at it. Far From You by Tess Sharpe (ARC) This one has very high ratings from most of my friends. You should know that this is written more like a contemporary novel with some suspense elements in it, rather than being an outright thriller. The triangle… Read more »

A Photographic Tour of She Is Not Invisible + giveaway

A Photographic Tour of She Is Not Invisible + giveaway

Traveling a long distance can be confusing and stressful. Now imagine you’re a teenager trying to find someone in a strange city, with only your young brother to help you. Think that’s hard? Now imagine that you are blind. That’s the idea behind She is Not Invisible, the new book from the brilliant Marcus Sedgwick. He’s one of my favorite authors, and one whose books I wish I could buy for everyone because each one takes me to a place I’ve never been before. I’ve certainly never read a book from the POV of a blind person before. While it’s a marked departure from his usual dark, gothic style, it’s still feels like a Sedgwick novel because of its careful puzzle-piece plotting, fascinating characters, and sheer ingenuity. I also enjoyed seeing the author’s thoughtful, quirky side in the narrative voice–he’s a humorous, pleasant interview, and upon reading any of his guest… Read more »

Mini Reviews: Magic and Chills Edition + Giveaway

Mini Reviews: Magic and Chills Edition + Giveaway

Today I’m taking a look at three books, two fantasy and one thriller, all featuring female leads ranging the badass spectrum from “totally” to “eh, not really.” One of them is also one of my favorite reads of 2013 and we’re giving away a finished paperback! Two of these covers are so summery and fantastical and leave me just longing for warmer weather. Even though it’s spring, the cold weather is hanging on here in Philly; it snowed just a few days ago! Coincidentally, I didn’t like the snowy covered book nearly as much as the pretty fantasy books. Let’s see what happened.  Title: A Snicker of Magic  Author: Natalie Lloyd  Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars  Release Date: February 25, 2014  Publisher: Scholastic Press  Age Group: MG  Source: Advance copy provided by the publisher  A Snicker of Magic is such a charming and delightfully Southern little story. The enchantingly named Felicity  Pickle is on a quest… Read more »

Rebel Belle: hummingbird cake recipe + giveaway

Rebel Belle: hummingbird cake recipe + giveaway

Rebel Belle goes down like a glass of cool, sweet tea on a hot summer’s day. As a big fan of both Hex Hall and School Spirits, I’m always excited when I hear there’s a new Rachel Hawkins book on the horizon, and this freaking cover had me panting with excitement. SO pretty! And full of potential kickassery! When Tonya sent me her copy from YAllFest, I was giddy with joy. You’ll be happy to know that the contents are just as fun as the packaging. The book starts out with Harper Price, southern belle, all gussied up at a school dance–only to find that some guy has passed on his not-of-this-earth abilities to her after she witnesses his death in the girls’ bathroom. Eventually she finds out that she’s charged with protecting David Stark, a former childhood friend, but the problem is, David’s mission in life seems to… Read more »

Introducing: Stray with Elissa Sussman + Giveaway

Introducing: Stray with Elissa Sussman + Giveaway

There’s something so exciting about seeing a friend realize a lifelong dream. I’ve known my friend Elissa for five years, and she has always been passionate about smart entertainment for young people (she worked on Tangled and The Princess and the Frog, you guys!), so when I heard that her first YA novel, Stray, was going to be published by HarperCollins (it hits stores October 7), I lost my freaking mind. As one does. I’ve been able to see the fascinating process of what a first-time novelist goes through unfold in front of me at our weekly coffee dates, and one of the things Elissa was most excited about was the cover, because that’s the part that’s completely out of the writer’s hands. Every week I’d ask her if she’d seen the design, and every week the answer was no. Until last week. And you guys, it was worth the… Read more »

Royal Tea with Melissa de la Cruz + The Ring and the Crown giveaway

Royal Tea with Melissa de la Cruz + The Ring and the Crown giveaway

It’s not everyday that you get an invitation to a Royal Tea! Disney Hyperion celebrated the publication of Melissa de la Cruz’s new book The Ring and the Crown today at the beautiful Peninsula Hotel, and I was lucky enough to receive an invitation. Look, I even had my deer dress up in anticipation of the occasion. She got fancy and is wearing a flower crown like the girl on the gorgeous cover. You’ll notice that Melissa de la Cruz and Margaret Stohl are also wearing flower crowns in the photo below, and the centerpieces also match the cover! Disney thought of every detail. Doesn’t Melissa look pretty? Her dress was the most perfect shade of pink.   The book is set in an alternate history world where the fate of the Franco-British Empire rests on two girls, Princess Marie-Victoria and her friend Aelwyn Myrddn, so it was very appropriate to… Read more »
