On Revenge: Mortal Danger tour post + giveaway

On Revenge: Mortal Danger tour post + giveaway

We’ve all been wronged. Maybe even grievously wronged. But how many of us seek justice? Mortal Danger is the story of a girl who does just that, and as part of the book’s blog tour, we’re pleased to welcome author Ann Aguirre back to The Midnight Garden as she tells us the best revenge story she’s ever heard.  Fact or fiction? You decide! The Best Revenge Story Ever by Ann Aguirre I have a friend. Let’s call her Lucy. In college, Lucy dated around a lot. At one point, she was dating five guys simultaneously. But they all knew she wasn’t exclusive with anyone, so it wasn’t shady. She had been unpopular in high school, so college was a whole new frontier, where none of the labels carried over. So she was having a blast her freshman year and who could blame her? By her sophomore year, she was tired… Read more »

Midsummer Romance with Katherine Longshore + giveaway

Midsummer Romance with Katherine Longshore + giveaway

Historical fiction can make the past come alive in a way that a textbook never could. When I first heard that there was a series about the Tudor era, and specifically, books focusing on the women in Henry VIII’s life, I was pretty intrigued. We all know how his wives fared, so to pull that off for a young adult audience is no easy feat! We’re pleased to welcome author Katherine Longshore to The Midnight Garden today as part of the Midsummer Romance Blog Tour. She’s here to talk about Brazen, a hefty book focusing on Mary Howard, Henry VIII’s only daughter-in-law. At the center of it is Henry Fitzroy, the king’s illegitimate son–and in the author’s eyes, he’s no dusty figurehead, but an attractive, vital young man. I bet a lot of young ladies (and men) would have paid more attention in history class if they’d imagined him this… Read more »

ALA Vegas 2014: event recap + giveaway!

ALA Vegas 2014: event recap + giveaway!

How was your weekend? Kate and I spent it at ALA 2014, which took place in Las Vegas this year. We thought we’d share some photos and memories from our trip with you. It’s an easy drive for us from Los Angeles, so we rounded up our respective tote-carriers husbands for a road trip and a whirlwind weekend filled with books, booze, and fun! We got stuck in traffic both ways and had to brave temperatures up to 111 degrees, but it was all totally worth it. Check out my wall with the fancy showgirl wallpaper! I kind of love her. She makes me feel festive. Somehow we landed a suite at the hotel, and the dramatic view from our sitting room window was pretty awesome at night. Some of the highlights from our trip: The Little Brown Dance Party, where Kate and I chatted with A.S. King, Paolo Bacigalupi,… Read more »

Foodie Tour of NYC + All Four Stars giveaway

Foodie Tour of NYC + All Four Stars giveaway

When I finished All Four Stars by Tara Dairman, I was thoroughly charmed–and thoroughly HUNGRY! This sweet, funny middle grade story of an eleven-year-old girl who becomes a restaurant critic in New York is, as my friend karen says, “surprisingly plausible,” as well as a must-read for anyone who has an appreciation for food. Kim says the author pretty much gives us a global culinary tour and inspired wanderlust in her as well. The madcap climax of the book centers around a place called Classy Cakes, which sounds like a dream for those of us with a sweet tooth. But I also loved that the story features so many cuisines from different countries, and in turn, so many different diverse characters and cultures as well. Gladys is a plucky heroine I wish I knew in real life, because I’m sure we’d have a grand time eating our way around the… Read more »

Murder is Bad Manners: exclusive cover reveal + giveaway

Murder is Bad Manners: exclusive cover reveal + giveaway

When you hear the words murder + mystery + English boarding school, you’re either the type of reader who is immediately intrigued, or you have no imagination whatsoever are not. And I, my friends, am the type who hops a tiny bit with excitement at those delicious words! What’s even better is when the story is set in the 1930s and features two girls at its center, one of whom is of Asian descent. With the #WeNeedDiverseBooks tag taking over the interwebs recently, it’s nice to be reminded that many authors and publishers have been quietly tending to stories with diverse characters all along. Today, we’re so pleased to be hosting the exclusive cover reveal for Murder is Bad Manners, a cozy middle grade mystery from debut author Robin Stevens. It’s the first book in the Wells & Wong series, which was just published in the UK under the title… Read more »

Discussion: Summery Book Recs + OPEN ROAD SUMMER giveaway

Summer summer summer tiiiiime… For most of us, summer no longer means months of uninterrupted reading time. (And if you’re still enjoying that perk, know that I’m glaring at you.) We’re all grown up and stuff now (allegedly), with the same old responsibilities we have every other day of the year. But while summer may have lost a bit of its magic, those perfect Beach Books haven’t. So whether you’re spending your summer reading time sneaking pages at the office, lazing by the pool, or with your toes in the sand, we’ve got the perfect book for you.   Wendy’s Books of Summer I love books with summer settings! My favorite summer reads are the books where an author transports us back to that time in our lives when we had all the time in the world. The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily Danforth Cameron Post remembers the… Read more »

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda: Exclusive Cover Reveal + giveaway

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda: Exclusive Cover Reveal + giveaway

Sometimes all you need to hear are 10 words to know that you desperately want a book. A few months ago, these were the words I saw on Twitter to describe Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli: You’ve Got Mail starring gay teenage boys with good grammar. Doesn’t that sound intriguing? That short description speaks to a certain playfulness, attention to detail, and romantic nature that I find so appealing. Not to mention the fact that it’s a LGBTQ story, which we need to see more of in YA fiction. Today, we’re so pleased to host the exclusive cover reveal for this highly anticipated book. It’ll be out from Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins on April 7th, 2015, and here’s your very first look!   Synopsis Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong… Read more »
