Mini Reviews: White Lines, Strands of Bronze and Gold, Breathless + free novella!

Today’s mini reviews are for books that surprised me in different ways, mostly because the stories or characters weren’t quite what I thought they would be. Sometimes that can be a very good thing. —————————————— Title: White LinesAuthor: Jennifer BanashRating: 4 out of 5 starsRelease Date: April 4, 2013Publisher: Putnam JuvenileAge Group: YASource: ARC provided by the publisher White Lines by Jennifer Banash isn’t the sort of novel that I would normally be attracted to, so I am really glad that a copy landed on my doorstep. 17-year-old Cat is living a teenager’s dream in the 1980s–she has her own apartment in New York City, which is bankrolled by her neglectful father. By day, she is a fragile creature struggling with infrequent visits from her abusive mother. By night, she loses herself in the frenzied, glittering world of the club scene, where she fends off skeevy characters and succumbs to… Read more »

Mila 2.0: review & giveaway

Mila 2.0: review & giveaway

Title: Mila 2.0Author:Debra DrizaRating: 3.5 out of 5 starsRelease Date: March 12, 2013Publisher: Katherine Tegan BooksAge Group: YASource:ARC provided by the publisher GIRL ANDROID. That should probably be the extent of my review, because you can pretty much tell by your reaction to those two words whether or not this book is for you. If they get you nearly crazed with excitement (guilty! I’m raising my hand), you should probably just cancel your dinner plans for next week when the book is released. If you read the freebie short entitled Origins, you already know that a devastating fire has changed Mila’s life. As she’s trying to adjust to her life in a new home, she’s also suffering from memory loss–not a great way to start off at a new school. It’s not too long before Mila realizes that she’s not like other girls, however, and the threat of having her secret… Read more »

freebie alert: YA round-up

freebie alert: YA round-up

It’s been awhile since I’ve done a freebie alert, but here are a few titles that may be worth checking out if you’re in the mood for a little e-present to yourself. Tortured by Caragh M. O’Brien is a “bridge” short story from Leon’s perspective in the Birthmarked trilogy that is currently free for Kindle. Be aware that you should read the first book before reading this, however, as there are apparently some spoilers in it. Tomorrow is Today by Julie Cross is a Kindle bonus story that is part of her Tempest trilogy. As you may recall, I wasn’t a huge fan of the first book, but for fans of the story or those who are curious, it’s a great way to sample the author’s style. Haunted Love by Cynthia Leitich Smith is free pre-order for Nook users at the moment, and is set in the same universe as… Read more »
