ALA 2015: event recap + giveaway!

ALA 2015: event recap + giveaway!

I’m back from the American Library Association Conference in San Francisco! Well, I’ve been back for almost a week, but was so wiped out (and still nursing minor injuries), so this post is just now going live. But here I am with tidbits and goodies to share. I was bad at taking photos this year, but it was for good reason–I was having such a good time that I often forgot! Last year’s trip was great, but ALA 2015 surpassed my expectations, in ways I didn’t even imagine. Stick around, since we’re also giving away TWO prizes–a box of 10 coveted ARCS to a U.S. reader, and an awesome tote “Reading is my Everything, Everything” bag filled with swag to an international reader. The Authors There were so many great authors at ALA this year, and I trotted around like an obedient pony trying to find them all. Marie Lu… Read more »

BEA 2015: Event Recap + Giveaway

Kim: Well folks, another year, another BEA. Layla: Says Kim! Another year, and BABY’S FIRST BEA. (That’s me. And it was my first BEA.) Kim:I was so overwhelmed by my first BEA I can’t even believe I signed up for another!  Layla, you were such a pro babby BEA-er. *sniff* So proud! By the way, did you know that it is actual magic when co-bloggers meet irl for the first time? You can actually wish upon a star from the magic of co-bloggers meeting. Or maybe that’s just us. Layla: Oh, I second this. My heart grew three sizes that day. Some of the highlights from our trip: On the floor at BEA Layla: I can show you the world … replete with shining, shimmering, and splendid ARCs. A herd of bloggers amassed for the drop of Disney’s A Whole New World, a retelling of Aladdin in an alternate universe where Jafar… Read more »

Vampires of Manhattan: book party + giveaway

Vampires of Manhattan: book party + giveaway

It was sweltering in Los Angeles today, but that didn’t stop Melissa de la Cruz’s book party for Vampires of Manhattan from being fun! I think the swanky vampires themselves would have approved of the gathering, which was attended by local LA authors, librarians, entertainment veterans, and a whole bunch kids who were very excited to be there. The garden party was hosted by Beautiful Creatures author Margaret Stohl, whose lovely home provided the perfect setting for this relaxed event. At The Ring and the Crown Tea I attended a few months ago, I was struck by how supportive all these LA authors are of each other, and it was really nice to see Allen Zadoff, Pseudonymous Bosch, Alyson Noel, Robyn Schneider, Leigh Bardugo, Jennifer Bosworth, Gretchen McNeil, Morgan Matson, and many others turn out in celebration of Melissa’s book. Sharp-eyed fans will notice that Vampires of Manhattan is actually… Read more »

A Q&A with Sarah J. Maas, Tiffany Schmidt, Susan Dennard, and Liz Norris: Event Recap

A Q&A with Sarah J. Maas, Tiffany Schmidt, Susan Dennard, and Liz Norris: Event Recap

You guys, you guys, you guys. What is life even anymore? I do not know. Last night I had the incredible, incredible privilege to moderate an author Q&A with Sarah J. Maas, Tiffany Schmidt, Susan Dennard, and Liz Norris at Children’s Book World in Haverford, PA. So obviously I was super nervous but quickly found out there was no reason to be! I met with the ladies briefly before the event and we discussed our Q&A gameplan. I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah and Susan at the YA Runs a 5K event here in Philly last July, and was completely overwhelmed when they both greeted me with hugs last night.       I was so thrilled to see a huge number of actual teens and younger people in the audience. When I attended an event earlier this year at CBW it seemed like the adults definitely outnumbered the… Read more »

ALA Vegas 2014: event recap + giveaway!

ALA Vegas 2014: event recap + giveaway!

How was your weekend? Kate and I spent it at ALA 2014, which took place in Las Vegas this year. We thought we’d share some photos and memories from our trip with you. It’s an easy drive for us from Los Angeles, so we rounded up our respective tote-carriers husbands for a road trip and a whirlwind weekend filled with books, booze, and fun! We got stuck in traffic both ways and had to brave temperatures up to 111 degrees, but it was all totally worth it. Check out my wall with the fancy showgirl wallpaper! I kind of love her. She makes me feel festive. Somehow we landed a suite at the hotel, and the dramatic view from our sitting room window was pretty awesome at night. Some of the highlights from our trip: The Little Brown Dance Party, where Kate and I chatted with A.S. King, Paolo Bacigalupi,… Read more »

Kim’s BEA 2014 Adventure: Event Recap + Giveaway!

Kim’s BEA 2014 Adventure: Event Recap + Giveaway!

Oh man, you guys, I am back from BEA and am here to regale with you my adventures! This has been such a crazy couple of weeks for me. My nephew was born the week before BEA so if I wasn’t already sleep deprived, BEA was sure to oblige! :p Luckily, I live in the Philly suburbs so it didn’t take too much time for me to hop on a train to NY Tuesday evening and make my way! Wednesday morning was the NOVL Bloggers Brunch at Hachette headquarters. It was too funny–when I stepped onto my subway train I just happened to be in the same car as Jamie and April. Serendipitous, I think! NOVL had a great brunch spread for us–including mimosas! I don’t know about you but I never say no to a mimosa. ;) We were treated to an awesome look at some very intriguing titles… Read more »

Royal Tea with Melissa de la Cruz + The Ring and the Crown giveaway

Royal Tea with Melissa de la Cruz + The Ring and the Crown giveaway

It’s not everyday that you get an invitation to a Royal Tea! Disney Hyperion celebrated the publication of Melissa de la Cruz’s new book The Ring and the Crown today at the beautiful Peninsula Hotel, and I was lucky enough to receive an invitation. Look, I even had my deer dress up in anticipation of the occasion. She got fancy and is wearing a flower crown like the girl on the gorgeous cover. You’ll notice that Melissa de la Cruz and Margaret Stohl are also wearing flower crowns in the photo below, and the centerpieces also match the cover! Disney thought of every detail. Doesn’t Melissa look pretty? Her dress was the most perfect shade of pink.   The book is set in an alternate history world where the fate of the Franco-British Empire rests on two girls, Princess Marie-Victoria and her friend Aelwyn Myrddn, so it was very appropriate to… Read more »
