YA Authors Read Snarky Reviews

YA Authors Read Snarky Reviews

Ever read a review that made you cringe because you loved the book so much? Well, imagine how the author feels! As bloggers, we can’t constantly be thinking about how an author will receive critical observation, or we’d be so crippled by the thought that we’d never say anything at all–which is entirely contrary to the spirit of citizen reviewing. BUT. There are times when things get so snarky that you do feel bad for the undoubtedly lovely person who put pen to paper, especially if you’ve gotten to know the author online. While many writers choose not to read their negative reviews (or just aren’t admitting it), the savvy ones who do, learn to put this stuff into context and try not to take it too much to heart. But never let it be said that The Midnight Garden allows its guests to rest upon their laurels! We invited… Read more »

Boundless Tour Stop: Cynthia Hand Interview & Giveaway!

Boundless Tour Stop: Cynthia Hand Interview & Giveaway!

Our readers know that The Midnight Garden reviewers are adults, and yet some authors are so amazing, they reduce us to a pile of giggling fangirls. One of our favorites is with us again today to talk about her new release Boundless, the final volume in her beautiful Unearthly series, as part of the official Mundie Moms Blog Tour for the book. Without further ado, please say hello to Cynthia Hand! Q & A with Cynthia Hand Welcome back to the blog! What’s life like now as a New York Times Bestselling author? Tell the truth–do you muscle in line at the Barnes & Noble? Ha! I wish! Seriously, the biggest thing that changed with me hitting the Times list is that I get asked for a lot more blurbs these days. Which means more free books. Which is a very good thing. Clara’s friendship with Angela is tested in… Read more »

Boundless (Unearthly #3): review

Boundless (Unearthly #3): review

Title: Boundless (Unearthly #3)Author: Cynthia HandRating: 4 out of 5 starsRelease Date: January 22, 2013 Publisher: Harper TeenAge Group: YASource: ARC This review is spoiler-free, and safe even if you haven’t read the first two books in the series. (But if you haven’t–sheesh, what are you waiting for?!) After waiting for Boundless for so long, I was strangely nervous about reading it. When the package arrived, I literally hugged it for a full minute because I knew what was inside! All day long, I was scared to even peek at the first page, so it wasn’t until after midnight that I started the book. But my burning need to know how this incredible story ended kept me up through the night until I finally finished it at 4 in the morning. This final installment in the Unearthly series picks up shortly after the novella Radiant, as Clara begins her freshman year… Read more »

event recap: Harper Teen Spring Into the Future Signing!

event recap: Harper Teen Spring Into the Future Signing!

One of my favorite people on GoodReads is my friend ♥ Rachel ♥, whose enthusiasm for YA is positively infectious. I love when she gets excited about a book, so I was really happy when she agreed to do a series of guest posts about the various author events she attends around the Los Angeles area. Without further ado, please welcome the lovely Rachel to The Midnight Garden! ~ Wendy Rachel’s Night at the HarperTeen Author Event First of all, I’d like to thank Wendy for inviting me on her blog to share my night! I was giddy with excitement to attend this event at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, because let’s face it: these women you see on the poster are the rock-star equivalent in the YA book world! The event was very crowded and with five authors and so much to tell, it was a little crazy. Anna Carey… Read more »

Literary Swoon, Day Five: Cynthia Hand

Literary Swoon, Day Five: Cynthia Hand

Photos courtesy of D. Sharon Pruitt and Cynthia Hand If you’re a fan of Unearthly, it should come as no surprise that Cynthia Hand loves the Anne of Green Gables series. Tucker calls Clara “Carrots,” after all, which is what Gilbert Blythe called Miss Anne Shirley! Anne took this to be a torment, and only later discovered that Gilbert meant it affectionately–and that he only teased her because he liked her. Not unlike that other literary couple that we love. When we asked Cynthia to tell us her favorite romantic book scene for our Literary Swoon feature, she made us tear up a little bit with her choice. If you’ve ever felt the agony and despair of recognizing a missed opportunity when it’s too late, you just may tear up, too. (As always, please be aware that there will be a spoiler below.) Cynthia Hand’s Favorite Romantic Book Scene My… Read more »

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part Two

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part Two

Last summer, when the cover art for Hallowed was first released, I jokingly threatened to show up at Cynthia Hand’s house with a pie and $20 in the hopes that she’d let me read the book early. I’m grateful that Cynthia tactfully overlooked my borderline stalker tendencies fangirling enough to do a two-part interview for this blog. In yesterday’s post, she went into detail about her exhaustive research for this series and talked about the question of free will versus predestination. Today we’re taking a look at the lighter side of things now that we’ve gotten those burning questions out of the way. Fun Questions with Cynthia Hand! How has your life changed since you published Unearthly? It must be pretty amazing to have readers react to your characters with such devotion. It’s been a crazy year, that’s for sure. When I was writing Unearthly, I really was writing for… Read more »

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part One

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part One

–> The Interview So Jam-Packed, It Has Two Parts 10 days into the new year, many of us already have a 5 star book for 2012.  Hallowed is the moving sequel to last year’s Unearthly, and like many other early readers, I was completely swept away by the intensely emotional second chapter to Clara’s story. Author Cynthia Hand chats with us below about the new book, which releases one week from today on January 17th! There was a lot of near-hysterical excitement over this post, so I hope it’ll leave you wriggling in your seat the way it did me. Don’t worry, this interview is mostly spoiler-free, so it’s safe even if you haven’t read the book yet. And don’t forget to join us tomorrow for the second part of this interview, too. Q & A with Cynthia Hand Firstly: are you trying to kill us with this emotional roller… Read more »
