Winterspell with Claire Legrand + Giveaway

Winterspell with Claire Legrand + Giveaway

There’s nothing better than a retelling that manages to take a fairytale we all think we know and completely turn it on its head. Winterspell is completely original, while still staying true to its Nutcracker roots. It is a very dark, and very beautiful story. There were a lot of things I loved about this story, but probably my favorite is that author Claire Legrand is very good at capturing the shades of grey in every character. There is no character who is all good or all bad. Everyone has nuance. Everyone does great and terrible things. There are just too many great things I can say about this book. This is a must read for anyone who likes dark fantasy and the grittier side of fairytales. And, it’s a stand-alone, so no terrible cliffhangers! We’re happy to have Claire Legrand at The Midnight Garden today as part of the official… Read more »

The Year of Shadows: review

The Year of Shadows: review

Title: The Year of Shadows Author: Claire Legrand Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Release Date:August 27, 2013 Age Group:Middle Grade Source:Simon & Schuster Middle grade books always get to me. Why? Because childhood and innocence are sacred to me and when injustices are done to either of these two precious things, it’s difficult to accept. Claire Legrand’s The Year of Shadows is not a walk in the park. It is not an action adventure that you can read on and off for a few giggles. This is a story of loss. Many losses. Olivia and her Nonnie and her maestro father have moved into the music hall because money is tight and they’ve had to sell their belongings. This is, of course, after Olivia’s mother left them about a year ago, having just given up on their life changing for the better. Olivia’s life is hard — practically homeless,… Read more »

The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls: review

The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls: review

The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girlsby Claire LeGrand Are you in the mood to spooked? Here is a delightfully dreadful tale will give you the creepy-crawlies. 12-year-old Victoria’s best friend Lawrence has gone missing. Not only is she confused and lonely after his disappearance, but no one in town seems to remember who he was. Prickly, persnickety Victoria is determined to find out what happened to him, and gradually her questions lead her straight to the tall, gray-brick Home at the end of her street where the bright-eyed Mrs. Cavendish lives. Written in brisk prose reminiscent of Roald Dahl’s, The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls showcases a gratifyingly smart debut by author Claire Legrand. The clever writing assumes that its readers are intelligent thinkers, with vibrant verbs and grim humor marching the story purposefully along with its spirited heroine and her quest. There is much wickedness afoot in this… Read more »
