Literary Swoon, Day Three: Rebecca Lim

Literary Swoon, Day Three: Rebecca Lim

Photos courtesy of D. Sharon Pruitt and Rebecca Lim We’re continuing our countdown to Valentine’s Day with some of our favorite YA authors! Rebecca Lim’s Mercy is one of the most interesting and mature YA angel books available right now, and I really enjoyed its blend of suspense and supernatural. The hint of a blossoming romance is also very promising, so I was very pleased when Rebecca agreed to share her thoughts on a favorite romantic book as part of our Literary Swoon series. If you enjoy Rebecca’s choice, by the way, you should check out our Bookish Valentine’s Day Gift Guide. It happens to feature an item with a quote from this very memorable moment! Rebecca Lim’s Favorite Romantic Book Scene Persuasion (1818) by Jane Austen is a sublime romantic novel and something I return to often. It has wry humour, wit, restraint and elegance, but beneath it all,… Read more »

Literary Swoon, Day Two: Gail Carriger

Literary Swoon, Day Two: Gail Carriger

Photos courtesy of D. Sharon Pruitt and Gail Carriger Hail the Victorious Parasol! The delightful Gail Carriger is here as part of our Literary Swoon series, in which we’ve asked our favorite young adult authors to share their favorite romantic book scenes. As a writer who has written some giddily romantic moments into her own novels—you’ll remember she describes Lord Maccon in Soulless as “A man who tastes like one of those expensive French soups, dark and rich”–we couldn’t wait to find out what Gail herself found swoon-worthy. Don’t forget that the scene may contain a spoiler, so proceed at your own risk! Gail Carriger’s Favorite Romantic Book Scene: Oh, without a doubt my favorite romantic scene is the one where Hetwith finally makes his move near the end of Taming the Forest King by Claudia J. Edwards. He wakes up Tevra, his superior officer of ten years, in the… Read more »

Literary Swoon, Day One: Nova Ren Suma

Literary Swoon, Day One: Nova Ren Suma

Photos courtesy of D. Sharon Pruitt & Nova Ren Suma To get you into the Valentine’s Day mood, we’ve asked some of our favorite young adult authors for their help! We asked two questions:   What is your favorite romantic scene from a novel? Why has it stayed with you?  The answers we received were surprising and touching, and provide a little glimpse into each writer’s reading world. Books are often an emotional experience, after all, and through them we often see our own breathless dreams and longings and aspirations reflected. Fair warning that each day features a scene that probably contains some spoilers, so you may want to skip them if you haven’t read the book and plan to do so soon. There’s no better person to start off our series than Nova Ren Suma, the author of one of my favorite books published last year: Imaginary Girls! Without… Read more »

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part Two

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part Two

Last summer, when the cover art for Hallowed was first released, I jokingly threatened to show up at Cynthia Hand’s house with a pie and $20 in the hopes that she’d let me read the book early. I’m grateful that Cynthia tactfully overlooked my borderline stalker tendencies fangirling enough to do a two-part interview for this blog. In yesterday’s post, she went into detail about her exhaustive research for this series and talked about the question of free will versus predestination. Today we’re taking a look at the lighter side of things now that we’ve gotten those burning questions out of the way. Fun Questions with Cynthia Hand! How has your life changed since you published Unearthly? It must be pretty amazing to have readers react to your characters with such devotion. It’s been a crazy year, that’s for sure. When I was writing Unearthly, I really was writing for… Read more »

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part One

The Epic Cynthia Hand Interview: Part One

–> The Interview So Jam-Packed, It Has Two Parts 10 days into the new year, many of us already have a 5 star book for 2012.  Hallowed is the moving sequel to last year’s Unearthly, and like many other early readers, I was completely swept away by the intensely emotional second chapter to Clara’s story. Author Cynthia Hand chats with us below about the new book, which releases one week from today on January 17th! There was a lot of near-hysterical excitement over this post, so I hope it’ll leave you wriggling in your seat the way it did me. Don’t worry, this interview is mostly spoiler-free, so it’s safe even if you haven’t read the book yet. And don’t forget to join us tomorrow for the second part of this interview, too. Q & A with Cynthia Hand Firstly: are you trying to kill us with this emotional roller… Read more »
