Winterspell with Claire Legrand + Giveaway

Winterspell with Claire Legrand + Giveaway

There’s nothing better than a retelling that manages to take a fairytale we all think we know and completely turn it on its head. Winterspell is completely original, while still staying true to its Nutcracker roots. It is a very dark, and very beautiful story. There were a lot of things I loved about this story, but probably my favorite is that author Claire Legrand is very good at capturing the shades of grey in every character. There is no character who is all good or all bad. Everyone has nuance. Everyone does great and terrible things. There are just too many great things I can say about this book. This is a must read for anyone who likes dark fantasy and the grittier side of fairytales. And, it’s a stand-alone, so no terrible cliffhangers! We’re happy to have Claire Legrand at The Midnight Garden today as part of the official… Read more »

event recap: Barry Lyga at Mysterious Galaxy!

event recap: Barry Lyga at Mysterious Galaxy!

See the smiling, congenial man on the left? He writes about serial killers. Specifically, he wrote I Hunt Killers, a book I absolutely loved, so it was great fun to attend a hilarious booksigning event last night. Barry Lyga discussed his dad’s reaction to the book (“Sick.”), his upcoming projects, and lots more. Please keep in mind that I’m paraphrasing most of the discussion, since I was so busy listening I forgot to take notes! About the Book The author said he did about 3 months of exhaustive research for his novel. Barry said he is fascinated by what pushes people to extremes, and he wrote the book in part because “Serial killers are our last boogeymen. We know that vampires aren’t real–” at this point, someone gasped, “WHAT?” and everyone laughed “–and science has proven many of the things we used to be scared of don’t exist. Serial killers are… Read more »

Congratulations, Kristina–be sure to let us know what you think of your books! As for the runner-up prize of Julie Cross’ Tempest, the winner is Kalen O’Donnell for his choice of Roger Zelazny’s Lord of Light.  He says, “its about in the future, humanity colonizes a distant planet, and the crew of the ship that brought them hoarded the technology and set themselves up as gods, modeled after the Hindu pantheon, and use this technology to reincarnate over and over again. It’s kinda complicated at times, but so brilliant.” Now how could I possibly resist that? It sounds like an awesome book. Sold, Kalen…sold. Stay tuned for an awesome giveaway next month, too. It’s our one-year blogoversary, so… Read more »

ARC blog tour: TEMPEST by Julie Cross!

ARC blog tour: TEMPEST by Julie Cross!

There’s been a ton of buzz around Tempest, the first book in a new time-travel trilogy by Julie Cross. The book doesn’t come out until January 17, 2012, but the film rights have already been sold and it’s a series that a lot of readers already seem to be raving over. My reaction was a little complicated (you can read my full review here), but it’s a book that I do think is going to be very popular. The good people over at St. Martin’s Press were nice enough to send me an ARC to review, and I’d love to share it with my fellow bloggers! If you’d like to participate in the ARC blog tour for Tempest, please sign up here. Basically you’ll have one week to read the book before mailing it off to the next participant with delivery confirmation, and the only requirements are that you write… Read more »
