Sometimes It Happensby Lauren Barnholdt Um…I’m not really sure why I read this book! But I think I was in the mood for some light relief after all the post-apocalyptic novels I’ve been plowing through lately. Sometimes you just need a little mindless filler while you’re between stories about girls with supernatural powers and stories about flesh-eating zombies. There are a lot of reasons why I shouldn’t have liked Sometimes It Happens. I hate books (or anything, really) that involve infidelity. I’m not not a big realistic YA fiction person. I’m not usually interested in books that are solely about high school boy-girl drama. I think the title is…pedestrian. But much to my surprise, I actually found this book to be pretty entertaining. Hannah’s best friend Ava has gone away for the summer, leaving her depressed and mopey since her ex-boyfriend cheated on her. Ava’s assigned her boyfriend Noah to… Read more »

Burn Bright (Night Creatures #1)by Marianne de Pierres Imagine a place where there are no Elders. No rules. No punishment. Only music and laughter and freedom. Deadly pleasures await on Ixion, an eerie island where young people are transported twice a year when they want to indulge in hedonistic pursuits. It is always night here, and every conceivable vice is available and encouraged. Retra has gone to Ixion in order to find her brother Joel, but her sheltered upbringing makes her cringe at the excess on display. She knows, however, that she cannot stand out and must give into pleasure before she can find what she most desires. This is a wildly exciting novel filled with visual splendor. There are balloon gondolas. Sleek, stingray-shaped powerboats. Female pirates. Cloaks made of bat skins. Electro-eyes that spy on citizens. Obedience strips that control where people with pain. And deadly night creatures who pounce… Read more »

Blood Red Road (Dustlands #1)by Moira Young This review may contain mild spoilers, but they’re nothing that you won’t see in the trailer for the film. That’s right, Ridley Scott optioned this book for a film before it was even published, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a hugely entertaining spectacle full of adventure and excitement and thrills, with action scenes that you can clearly picture as you read them. Saba’s twin brother Lugh has been kidnapped by a band of horsemen, and she sets off alone on the quest to bring him back. Well, she tries to go alone, but her pesky little sister Emmi keeps finding a way to tag along after her, even though they’re trekking through a dried up wasteland filled with danger around every turn. Here are some of the things that made this story super fun: * Saba is a bad-ass. There’s no… Read more »
Angel Burn, a book I really enjoyed, is free for Kindle right now! Don’t miss reading this terrific story, which is a twist on the idea of angels as kindly guardians. There’s a great romance in it as well between two very likable characters. Read my review for more info and you can download the ebook from Amazon here! This is a very new release, so it may be a mistake, so act quickly if you want it in case it gets pulled down.
Shift (Shade #2)by Jeri Smith-Ready The first book in this series was really entertaining. I liked the concept of a world in which kids born after a certain time period could all see ghosts, as well as the idea of exploring how difficult that reality might be for both the ghosts and the ones they leave behind. Aura’s boyfriend Logan made a stupid mistake and paid for it with his life, leaving her full of guilt and unresolved feelings. In both the previous book and in this one, she has to find a way to help him come to terms with his future as well as coming to terms with her own. Complicating matters is the handsome Zachary and the Department of Metaphysical Purity, both of whom want Logan gone for good. Warning: spoilers to follow. With such an interesting set-up, expanding on the story that began in Shade should… Read more »
