A Love Letter to Sarah J. Maas + Giveaway

I’m so excited to be kicking off a brand new feature here at The Midnight Garden! Introducing: The Love Letter Series! In which we wax lyrical to our favorite authors. The ones that inspire us. The ones that keep us reading way past midnight. The ones that give us all the feeeeeeelings. Without further adieu, I suppose I will kick us off with a love letter to (C’mon, guys, it’s me. Who else would it be to?) Sarah J. Maas!   Dearest Sarah J. Maas, It’s no secret how much I adore you. I hope by now I am well known for relentlessly pushing your books and for my inability to disengage the caps lock whenever your series are mentioned. I am really quite passionate about your writing. I shall elaborate! I love how you create such intricately fantastical worlds with seeming effortless ease. It’s so easy to escape into your… Read more »

A Q&A with Sarah J. Maas, Tiffany Schmidt, Susan Dennard, and Liz Norris: Event Recap

A Q&A with Sarah J. Maas, Tiffany Schmidt, Susan Dennard, and Liz Norris: Event Recap

You guys, you guys, you guys. What is life even anymore? I do not know. Last night I had the incredible, incredible privilege to moderate an author Q&A with Sarah J. Maas, Tiffany Schmidt, Susan Dennard, and Liz Norris at Children’s Book World in Haverford, PA. So obviously I was super nervous but quickly found out there was no reason to be! I met with the ladies briefly before the event and we discussed our Q&A gameplan. I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah and Susan at the YA Runs a 5K event here in Philly last July, and was completely overwhelmed when they both greeted me with hugs last night.       I was so thrilled to see a huge number of actual teens and younger people in the audience. When I attended an event earlier this year at CBW it seemed like the adults definitely outnumbered the… Read more »

Favorite Books of 2015

Favorite Books of 2015

Get your gift cards ready, because here it is: our annual list of favorite books! We read many, many 2015 releases (and sampled many more), and here are the ones we feel you shouldn’t miss. Kim’s Favorite 2015 Releases Once again, unlike so many lists you’ll see in publications, my list is comprised almost entirely of fantasy/science fiction. I would like to point out Archivist Wasp and The Awesome as two wonderful books, fantasy and paranormal respectively, that I think are deserving of more attention! All in all, it was a really great year for genre fiction (more so on the fantasy side). There are certainly some books I just didn’t get to that I know would’ve made an appearance here (Simon Vs.the Homo Sapiens Agenda immediately springs to mind). It was particularly hard to keep up with reading during the last several months of the year thanks to my… Read more »

Queen of Shadows Tour: downloadable tattoos + giveaway

Queen of Shadows Tour: downloadable tattoos + giveaway

Welcome to our stop on the official Queen of Shadows blog tour, hosted by the founders of #MaasThirteen! Our love for all things Throne of Glass and Sarah J. Maas is well-documented here at The Midnight Garden, so we were pleased to be asked to participate this year. We’re pretty smug about the many readers we’ve hounded relentlessly into persuaded to read this series, and this latest installment is full of everything you’d expect and more: death-defying action scenes, BADASS WOMEN, insanely cool mythical creatures, and emotional trauma that could rip your heart out. I’ve made some downloadable Queen of Shadows tattoos so you can be reminded of Aelin–and really, what better way to spread love and awareness for the series than to wear its words on your body? Download Free Queen of Shadows Tattoos! The set includes all the tattoos shown above, and there are two sets on the page… Read more »

ALA 2015: event recap + giveaway!

ALA 2015: event recap + giveaway!

I’m back from the American Library Association Conference in San Francisco! Well, I’ve been back for almost a week, but was so wiped out (and still nursing minor injuries), so this post is just now going live. But here I am with tidbits and goodies to share. I was bad at taking photos this year, but it was for good reason–I was having such a good time that I often forgot! Last year’s trip was great, but ALA 2015 surpassed my expectations, in ways I didn’t even imagine. Stick around, since we’re also giving away TWO prizes–a box of 10 coveted ARCS to a U.S. reader, and an awesome tote “Reading is my Everything, Everything” bag filled with swag to an international reader. The Authors There were so many great authors at ALA this year, and I trotted around like an obedient pony trying to find them all. Marie Lu… Read more »

Top Ten Tuesday (7): Top Ten Books of 2015 (So Far)

Top Ten Tuesday (7): Top Ten Books of 2015 (So Far)

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week, the theme is “Top Ten Books of 2015 (So Far)” and we’re happy to be participating!       Golden Son by Pierce Brown The second installment in this sci-fi series upped the ante from its predecessor smartly moving the majority of the action from Mars into space. The first book is all world building and war games in a future-dystopia. Golden Son is war and space, political intrigue and betrayals, and perhaps a smidgen of romance. And if you like wham!bam! endings that’s likely to leave you with your jaw somewhere past the floor then this is definitely a book for you. The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon Another 2015 second in a series that dramatically improved upon the first. Whereas the The Bone Season was a sort of jailbreak story, The Mime Order is a murder… Read more »

Top Ten Tuesday (5): Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases For the Rest of 2015

Top Ten Tuesday (5): Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases For the Rest of 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. This week, the theme is “Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases for the Rest of 2015” and zomg it was so, so hard to choose just ten!!     Contemporaries I’ve Been Eyeing Guyliner by J. Leigh Bailey I was just telling Layla at BEA that I am in desperate need of a YA romance about two guys having a bromance and then falling tenderly (and unexpectedly) in love. It looks like Guyliner is here to fulfill that need for me. Give me all of the unexpected (b)romances. ALL OF THEM. First & Then by Emma Mills A contemporary re-telling of Pride & Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights? Good lord, give me a time machine so that I might travel to this book. I expect many swoons and many squeals of delight. Don’t let me down, book. Also, I know I… Read more »
