This book is so funny and poignant and fiercely positive, most especially about body image and self-love. If you love your contemporary YAs filled with an adorable romance, family relationships, and great friends, don’t miss this one! Willdowdean Dickson will totally win you over with her sassy Texas attitude, and you’ll love her for being so whole-heartedly determined to be the person she wants to be. I cheered for Willowdean the whole way through, and I bet you will, too.
Today, the author is with us (dressed in her finest pageant wear, naturally) to share a fun extra scene that takes place just before the book starts. We have a super cute giveaway below, too!
Hey there! I’m so excited to be on The Midnight Garden today–thanks for having me! I’ve got some fun exclusive content to share with y’all.
Below is a text conversation between Willowdean and her best friend, Ellen. This exchange takes place prior to the book and occurs while Willowdean is at Harpy’s, the small town fast food joint where she works. At this point, Willowdean is half way through her evening shift with a new co-worker, a boy named Bo Larson…aka the guy they nickname “Peachbutt” later on.
The dynamic between Ellen and Willowdean is one of my favorite things about this book, so I hope y’all enjoy your first look at this duo and also a little glimpse at Bo Larson/Private School Bo/Peachbutt!

About the Book
Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.
Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.
With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.
About the Author
Julie Murphy is a potty-mouthed Southern belle who was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but found her home in Fort Worth, Texas. She’s never seen Star Wars, but has yet to meet a made for TV movie she didn’t love. When she’s not writing, Julie can be found cruising Costco for free samples, watching Sister Act 2, stalking drag queens on instagram, obsessing over the logistics of Mars One, and forever searching for the perfect slice of cheese pizza. She lives with her bearded husband, two vicious cats, and one pomeranian that can pass as a bear cub. SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY was her debut novel and Disney has already optioned film rights to DUMPLIN’, her second young adult novel.
