DUMPLIN ARC Box giveaway at The Midnight Garden
When I finished Dumplin‘, I jotted this down at 3 in the morning: If this book were a movie, we’d all be at Julie Murphy’s slumber party piled in front of the TV in our jammies, both screaming with laughter and clutching each other the minute someone leaned in for a kiss. Everyone in the free world is about to find out how fun that imaginary party would be, because the book comes out next month and it’s been optioned for a movie! Party at Julie’s house, guys!

This book is so funny and poignant and fiercely positive, most especially about body image and self-love. If you love your contemporary YAs filled with an adorable romance, family relationships, and great friends, don’t miss this one! Willdowdean Dickson will totally win you over with her sassy Texas attitude, and you’ll love her for being so whole-heartedly determined to be the person she wants to be. I cheered for Willowdean the whole way through, and I bet you will, too.

Today, the author is with us (dressed in her finest pageant wear, naturally) to share a fun extra scene that takes place just before the book starts.  We have a super cute giveaway below, too!

Julie Murphy pageantA Note from Julie Murphy

Hey there! I’m so excited to be on The Midnight Garden today–thanks for having me! I’ve got some fun exclusive content to share with y’all.

Below is a text conversation between Willowdean and her best friend, Ellen. This exchange takes place prior to the book and occurs while Willowdean is at Harpy’s, the small town fast food joint where she works. At this point, Willowdean is half way through her evening shift with a new co-worker, a boy named Bo Larson…aka the guy they nickname “Peachbutt” later on.

The dynamic between Ellen and Willowdean is one of my favorite things about this book, so I hope y’all enjoy your first look at this duo and also a little glimpse at Bo Larson/Private School Bo/Peachbutt!

Willowdean and Ellen’s Text Convo

TEXT 1.3

About the Book

18304322Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back.

Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.

With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin’ is guaranteed to steal your heart.

About the Author

Julie Murphy is a potty-mouthed Southern belle who was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, but found her home in Fort Worth, Texas. She’s never seen Star Wars, but has yet to meet a made for TV movie she didn’t love. When she’s not writing, Julie can be found cruising Costco for free samples, watching Sister Act 2, stalking drag queens on instagram, obsessing over the logistics of Mars One, and forever searching for the perfect slice of cheese pizza. She lives with her bearded husband, two vicious cats, and one pomeranian that can pass as a bear cub. SIDE EFFECTS MAY VARY was her debut novel and Disney has already optioned film rights to DUMPLIN’, her second young adult novel.

DUMPLIN’ will be released on September 15, 2015. Pre-order the book and get a Willowdean lapel pin while supplies last!

  2. Ariel Kirst

I read about this book in a blog article about books chubby girls (and women) should read to feel more kick-ass. Now I HAVE to read it. Because hello, fabulous.

  3. Susan

I always been a “big” girl. Want to see a hero depicted in a YA book.

This looks so exciting! I’m looking forward to a fun contemporary book that seems to have a bit more originality than a lot of what I’ve read lately.

  5. Alicia

I’m excited to read it because this is one of the few books I’ve seen that is about a fat girl who is comfortable in her skin and doesn’t want to lose weight. Body Positivety ftw!

  6. Leandra Wallace

I love funny books and this sounds like it’s hilarious! And books set in the South are always favs of mine. Oh, and I love books w/restaurants, cafes, greasy spoons, etc. =)

I’m so excited for this book, I’ve been waiting months for it! I’m a 38 year old fat woman who has been working hard to love my body and be content with my size and illness. I feel that this book would be a huge inspiration!

  11. Kari

As a fat girl myself, I’m excited to read about Willowdean and her hijinks! I always felt like I had a very normal and great life growing up even though I was overweight, so I can’t wait to hop in a time machine and revisit those times with DUMPLIN’.

  12. Shannan R

I’m so excited for this book because Willowdean definitely seems like the heroine I would love to read about. As a woman who is bigger and can sympathize with Dumplin’, I need more body positive books like this! The premise sounds funny, Willowdean sounds funny, and it just seems like it’s going to be a book that makes me smile :)

  16. Hannah

I am excited for this book because there are not enough body positive books, especially ones that realize that fat is not a bad word. I have always been self-conscious about myself and hearing about this book made me very excited because Willowdean is comfortable with herself and that is vey inspiring in itself.

  17. Raquel

If nothing else, that text conversation just completely won me over. I WAS CRACKING UP AS I READ IT. Also I just really appreciate that it isn’t written in silly text lingo because nobody talks like that (okay some teens do but no one I knew did!)

Willowdean totally sounds like the kind of person I would want to hang out with and I already like the sound of the relationship between her and her friend! :)

Thank you for sharing this with us, Wendy & Julie!! :)

It was a revelation for me when “Hairspray” came out. I was a chubby teen who had never seen a protagonist with my body on screen. When I read the synopsis and excerpt from “Dumplin,” I get that same sense of familiarity. I will def. be picking up “Dumplin”

  22. Jennifer Y.

I cannot wait to read this book! I have heard so many good things about Dumplin’ & I look forward to meeting Willowdean & friends for myself. As a southern girl who definitely isn’t a twig and loves her some Dolly Parton, I think this book will be one I’ll really enjoy!

  23. Anneliz Cintron

I’d love to win this ARC because I’ve been eyeing this book for months and I think it has a great them, being happy with your body no matter what and since I sometimes get body shamed I’d like to read something empowering.

  31. Kavs Raman

Society has been teaching us for so long that “skinny” is beautiful, skinny is “in”. But Dumplin seems to be the kind of book that defies all the norms and paradigms and really sets into stone the meaning of confidence, being a role model, and being yourself. I’m so excited to read this! <3

  32. Natasha

I have a lot of respect for people that are confident and don’t let other people bring them down

  33. Peach @ Books With Chemistry

This is a seriously a world of fun! I had no idea it’s been optioned as a movie (for Disney!). I’m getting exciting at the thought and I haven’t even read it yet. And those texts! Too cute!

    The cover.

  35. Thomas

So glad to see this book featured on this site! As someone who wants to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology to study eating disorders and related issues, it’s wonderful to view a book that tackles the issue of body image in a positive way. I look forward to reading this novel and I hope that its endorsement from the Midnight Garden is well-deserved. (:

It sounds like such an amazing book and the topic is so different from a lot of the books I read and I think it’s relevant and a lot of people will be able to relate to it.

  41. Kim K

This book looks so wonderful! It’s so refreshing to see a book about a girl who loves herself.

  42. Lia

I’m anticipating this book soososoosoososo much! Too often in YA, the female protagonist is supernaturally gorgeous and thin, so this is a refreshing change!

  43. Brandy

I’m so excited about this book. I love confident fat characters, and Willowdean sounds so fun! I love her name because it sounds southern and sassy and reminds me of Willadeene Parton. I also love Dolly and grew up right outside her hometown. Plus, Bo was the name of my ideal boyfriend back in middle school because I was crazy about Bo Brady on Days of Our Lives. Everything about the book just sounds like it’s made for me.

  45. Michella

I am SOSOSOSO excited for this book. Not only is it so pretty, but I love the premise. I also really want my mom to read this since she’s overweight and is very conscious of her weight and puts herself down in a joking way. I love Julie’s confidence and I hope this book will make her feel a bit better about herself. Thanks so much!

I need to read this book. Any book that mentions Dolly Parton songs is a winner in my book!

  47. Randi

I want to read about a body-positive heroine! This is a much-needed perspective in YA. And I want to share the ARC with my high school English students. ?

  48. Erin Ellis

I’m excited to read this book because it sounds so fun! Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

  49. marjorie

I have heard so many raves about this! I just finished Dietland, an adult fat-girl novel with a lot of humor in it, but wound up thinking that in its attempt at over-the-top satire it was a lesser version of Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens. (In other words, YA for the TKO.)

And now I am so ready for a warm, humane, character-driven, real-world fat-girl story!

  50. Emmy

Ooh, this book sounds great! It’s about time we get some body positivity in YA.

  51. Jessica Cooley

AH! I LOVED this book. It was so much fun. One of my favorite parts about the book has to be Dolly – I’m a TN girl and she’s one of my heroes. That woman is even more amazing than even Willowdean thinks.
SUCH a great read! Hope the winner loves it!

  52. Denise M

This book sounds totally fun. I am a sucker for bigger girls find love and love themselves kind of books, mostly because I am a bigger girl with not a lot of self esteem

  53. Nikki Lemmons

I am so excited about this book! I have my Willowdean pin from preordering and it’s so cute! I love that this is pitched as such a body positive book. I’m 23 and still don’t know how to love my body. In fact, just this morning at work I was talking about its flaws. I’m hoping some of Willowdean will rub off on me when I read this!

  54. Maryssa L

I’m super excited for this book because I am 500% here for body-positive books!!! This sounds amazing and wonderful, honestly!

  55. Ellie M

I’ve heard so many good things about this book. And I’m usually really picky about contemporary books, but this one just sounds amazing and real and I can definitely relate to Dumplin.
    Thanks for the giveaway!
