Contemporaries I’ve Been Eyeing

Guyliner by J. Leigh Bailey

I was just telling Layla at BEA that I am in desperate need of a YA romance about two guys having a bromance and then falling tenderly (and unexpectedly) in love. It looks like Guyliner is here to fulfill that need for me. Give me all of the unexpected (b)romances. ALL OF THEM.

First & Then by Emma Mills

A contemporary re-telling of Pride & Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights? Good lord, give me a time machine so that I might travel to this book. I expect many swoons and many squeals of delight. Don’t let me down, book. Also, I know I shouldn’t be influenced by covers but there’s something about this one that is adorable and makes me want to squish this book.

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

I am super jazzed for this epistolary debut about a “girl in the bubble” who strikes up an unlikely romance with the boy next door. I love epistolary novels and am a sucker for any sort of forbidden love. Also, this is Wendy’s favorite book of 2015 (so far) and that should tell you pretty much everything you need to know about how great this book is bound to be. (You can win a copy from us, btw!)

New Genre Fiction to Look Out For

The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow

I sneaked a peak at the first chapter of this dystopian and I was already really digging it. Also, the heroine might be “evil” leader of a definitely evil dystopian country. Also, also the love interest appears to be a hostage to her country. You remember what I said about forbidden love above? Yes. I also lovvvvve when the love is forbidden because the characters are on enemy sides of a war. Gimme.

Blood and Salt by Kim Liggett

I saw this one described somewhere as a “horror romance” which, yes please. Give me it immediately. The description on Goodreads also promises gruesome deaths (yes, always yes to that) and a “forbidden boy” which, as you’ve been learning as you read this post, is an automatic YES.  Give me the creepy, give me the gory, and give me my swoons.

Madly by Amy Alward

Pretty much the only thing I really needed to know about this book was that Sarah J. Maas has blurbed it. It looks cute and fun as all get out. The heroine is on a quest to save the princess (yay ladies saving ladies!) who has accidentally potioned herself into falling in love with her own reflection. Along the way it looks as though Sam will be battling growing feelings for a nemesis and rival so you know I am going to be all over this one.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I basically expect every inch of this book to be wicked and delicious and just dripping with intrigue, magic, and heartbreak. I also really can’t wait to get whatever scrap of news about Alina, Mal, and Nikolai that Leigh might bestow upon us!

Continuing Series

The Immortal Heights by Sherry Thomas

Aw, I just adore this sweet little fantasy series about a cross dressing bad-ass lady and the doomed prince that she loves. I love the (sometimes) boarding school setting, but it’s also super enjoyable when the novel branches out into the fantasy realms. Certain revelations at the end of Book 2 guarantee that this one will pretty much be a nail biter. I don’t want this series to end!

Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie

This is another series ender in 2015 and I can’t believe it because the scope of this story is so epic and gargantuan. This is super smart sci-fi that challenges our contemporary concept of gender at every turn. It’s also about a sentient space ship consciousness that’s been trapped in a human body. The first installment won the 2014 Hugo for Best Novel and it was well deserved. You should be reading this series.

Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas

I’m sure this one needs no introduction. It’s embarrassing how badly I need this book. I’m suppressing my all caps mode but I might lose the battle. I just need more wyverns, and Aelin being incredible, and creepy, dark evil things, and please for the love of god, Sarah, have mercy on us and give us a Chaelin reunion. And lots of steamy please. It really isn’t so much to ask!

Bonus (because I can’t help myself):

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

So technically this is a 2016 release but it comes out the very first week of January and that is practically still 2015. Basically what I know about this is that it was written by Susan, it is an epic fantasy novel, and it features a badass friendship between two ladies. From that alone the want is SO HIGH. I was lucky enough to get a copy at BEA and its presence torments me daily. “Read me, Kim!” “But then you would be over, Truthwitch, and I’m just not ready for that yet.”

So those are the books I covet most for the rest of the year! Do we share anything on this list? Have I missed anything that desperately needs to be on here? Have you read any of these already and have a verdict for me? Let me know!

Have you heard of More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera? I have heard wonderful things about that one from my friends in the book blogging community who are into GLBTQ YA – also, I am so excited to read Everything, Everything, because Wendy has praised it so much, and I trust Wendy (and all of you) with my YA-loving heart. Great mixture of genre and selection in this post!

I’ve got Queen of Shadows on my list too! BECAUSE SO MUCH LOVE FOR THAT INCREDIBLE SERIES *hyperventilates quietly* I haven’t even heard of a ton of these…omg, Guyliner sounds fantastic and I want The Scorpion Rules so so baldy. VILLLLLLAINS. I love the genre mix too! YAY. Okay, off to goodreads…my TBR is probably going to hate you but also love you. ;-)

I feel like there’s a good contingent of us who are ready to sacrifice a limb to read QoS. And, I mean, rightly so.

And I’m so glad I can bring a number of these to your attention! *insert smiling devil emoji* Sorry not sorry about the ever more burgeoning state of your TBR.

I’m really excited for 6 of Crows and Queen of Shadows. Also Ice Like Fire. I really want to read the Immortal Heights, but I haven’t managed to get my hands on a copy of the Perilous Sea yet. I haven’t heard of first and then until now, but it looks fabulous!

Those are two very excellent new series starters to be excited about! And you should try and make time for the Sherry Thomas series! Especially once September comes around and you can just binge the series. Seriously adorable ship ahoy!

Yes, The Raven King was pushed back to winter 2016. *insert unseemly wailing noises* Otherwise it would definitely have had a top place on this list!

  4. Angela @ Angela's Library

I’m squealing over the fact that The Scorpion Rules is on your list! I managed to get a signed copy at BEA and devoured it in a day. It was nothing like I expected but spectacular all the same, one of the most interesting and unpredictable books I’ve read in a long time. Can’t wait to see what you think of it!

Omg, omg yessssssss. It makes SO happy to hear you say this because I am really looking forward to it. My hopes are mighty high! Is it like book hangover level? I really wouldn’t mind a book hangover kind of book. I’m in the mood for one. I’m trying not to read it yet because I have *so* many July and August books to get to before I even start to tackle the fall releases but it is calling to me!

      • Angela @ Angela's Library

It didn’t give me a book hangover, exactly, but it was so unlike anything I’ve ever read that I couldn’t tear myself away. I literally had no idea where the book was going to go next, and there’s one character who’s thrown in partway through who takes the novel in a totally new direction and counts as one of the most magnetic characters I’ve read in ages. So, so good!

Awesome list! If you enjoy some forbidden love chech out The Dragonfly Guardian by Angela Antaloczy, it is a great YA novel that is headed down that path! Can’t wait to see what happens in book 2 (which is what book I am highly anticipating in 2015!).

  6. Bethany

The world needs more Friday Night Lights meets (ANYTHING). Had no idea about First & Then, so WoohoO!

And Sarah J Maas blurbs books other than those by Susan Dennard and Alex Bracken??? GOOD TO KNOW!

I hadn’t seen anything about the other continuing series (Sherry Thomas, Ann Leckie) so sounds like I’ll need to do some backtracking… So many books, SO LITTLE TIME.

My list: QUEEN of SHADOWS, SIX OF CROWS, CARRY ON SIMON SNOW (I’m a hugeo Rainbow fan), TONIGHT THE STREETS ARE OURS (Leila Sales – I *loved* THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE) – and Rebecca Serle’s 2nd in her contemporary young hollywood series (TRULY, MADLY, FAMOUSLY), *and* Richelle Mead’s new one! (SOUNDLESS)

Awesome! So happy to get First & Then on your radar, Bethany! One of the BEA books that I really wanted yet didn’t manage to get into my grasping claws. That’s okay! There’s always October. :)

And haha. Yes, apparently she does! That’s pretty much all I needed to know to put Madly super high up on my TBR. Givvvvve it me.

I feel you about that. There’s just enough time in one life to read all the books we want to. :'( But I can definitely endorse the Sherry Thomas series! Ann Leckie’s series is GREAT but it’s hard core adult sci-fi. If that’s your scene, though, you should definitely read it!

For some weird reason I keep forgetting about Carry On. I admit I’m intrigued…it’s not the actual Simon Snow story, it’s Cath’s fan fiction, right? I’m always down for some m/m romance/feels. I’m really looking forward to the new Sales too. And would you believe it but I haven’t read a Richelle Mead book (yet). We shall see!!

It’s my pleasure as always, Carina. Thanks for reading! :) Let’s be real, Six of Crows is going to be amazing. It’s right up there with Truthwitch. Just STARING at me. “Noooo, book! The time is not yet right!” Super stoked to hear you loved The Immortal Heights! Yet another one I’m putting off starting just because I don’t want it to be over!

Queen of Shadows YES!! ALL THE YEEEESSS!!! I’m dying to get this one downloaded to my Kindle on midnight of release day!!

And Truthwitch… well, I cave in and I’ve started reading it already and I DO NOT WANT IT TO END!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I’m at page 266 and I love it and I need more and I don’t want it to end!!

When Queen of Shadows is released (and it better appear on my Kindle at midnight sharp) I am going to spend a not insignificant amount of time just lying in my bed and staring at it for awhile feeling 100% overwhelmed to even start. I am also absolutely making sure I am not working that Wednesday because I need to do nothing but read QoS from the time it appears on my Kindle until I finish. No interruptions! I will also surely need recovery time from whatever emotional damage is surely in store for me. Don’t worry. I’m a normal person!! Don’t worry about me.

SO EXCITED to hear you’re loving Truthwitch, though!!!! I still can’t deal with it. It’s still staring me down.

  9. Nikki

Super excited for Everything, Everything and Ancillary Mercy!

    • Kim

I knowwwww. I really want to read it but I don’t know if I should wait til October to make it more of a “seasonal” read. I really enjoy horror but I feel like I never make enough time for it in my reading schedule. And this is not only horror but there’s a heavy romance element which, for me, is perfect.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT, THOUGH. QoS is the only one that matters. I grin like the cheshire cat whenever I see newer recruits to the TOG fandom have fully accepted their new lot in life. WAITING AROUND FOR PAIN AND MORE PAIN FROM SJM.

  10. Brenda

Six of Crows is one of my most anticipated YA releases, I just love the setting and characters in her books. And the cover of Truthwitch is stunning, wow just love it. I know I shouldn’t be influenced by them, but some just speak to me. Lovely list as usual!

Let’s face it, Six of Crows is going to be amazing and I haven’t already devoured it because I just don’t want the amazingness to be over. I’m so excited to see more of the Grisha universe (and to see how non-Grisha function in this world). I will also be happy with whatever little morsel of info we can get about Alina and co. So exciting that Nikolai is getting his own book too!

  11. Mackenzie @ Oh, For the Love of Books!

Six of Crows, Queen of Shadows, and Truthwitch I all needed yesterday. AHHHHH! These books!!! *happy dance* QoS is going to be amazing because, let’s face it, this series gets better as it goes along. SoC and Truthwitch I’m a bit more hesitant about because I’m afraid they’re not going to be as good as the other series (Bardugo did give us Nikolai after all), but they both still sound like awesome fantasies! The Scorpion Rules is one that I’ve only recently found but sounds incredibly fascinating too. So many awesome books, so little time!

    • Kim

You are a fantasy lady after my own heart!!! I have pretty much zero doubts that QoS will be the best entry in the series to date. Have you read the first three chapters that were available on iBooks? I DIED. You are currently speaking to a ghost. It’s all very tragic. But at least I can still READ. :) And I get you. There is always some fear when starting a beloved author’s new series. And it’s okay if they end up not being your scene! But odds are they’ll be both be awesome. For me I know it’s to wait until it feels “right” to read it (I’m a huge, huge mood reader). So many good books ahead of us in the next 6 months!

  12. Anne @ Lovely Literature

Ooh, you snagged a copy of Truthwitch! I didn’t get one, but will be looking forward to it in January (wow, that seems far away). Also, I didn’t realize all the details about The Scorpion Rules — forbidden love, evil leader — and can’t wait to read it!

Yes I got super, super fortunate and was able to snag one! I’m pretty sure that Susan does occasional giveaways on Tuesdays on Twitter so you can check there too if you want! And yessssss. Glad I could get you more excited about Scorpion Rules! You know when you just get a great instinct and feeling for a book? I totally have it for that one. Super jazzed about it.
