If you’re a fan of Tarver and Lilac from These Broken Stars, I don’t even know how to explain how much you’re going to love the new characters in This Shattered World! This companion story set in the same universe follows the awesome Jubilee Chase and the guy she absolutely, positively should not get involved with, Flynn Cormac. And, well…you know how that goes. ;) I thought Tarver was going to be hard to live up to, but Flynn’s going to win you over fast–but not as fast as Jubilee does, because she’s kickass from page 1. I have a serious girl crush on her and I’m not afraid to admit it.
There is so much to say about how the Starbound universe has deepened and expanded in this second book, but the characters are a great place to introduce you to this fantastic story. To kick off the official blog tour we’re hosting for the book, we thought it’d be fun to ask the authors to provide a military-style dossier on their characters. Ready to meet your new favorite couple? Ta-daaa!
As those who have read These Broken Stars know, the Starbound universe is full of secrets, mysteries, and conspiracies. In order to keep our stories straight (literally!) our editor had us make an encyclopedia of the entire universe before we ever got started on revisions for the first book. We’re constantly adding to it now, and we’ve got pages and pages of info about the planets in this particular galaxy, the history of terraforming, dossiers of characters… and we’re pulling out a few of them featured in This Shattered World here to share with you! (Don’t worry, we’re not spoiling any real secrets for you. You’ll have to read the books to discover those!)
Hair: Dark brown, curly
Appearance: Of Irish descent. Pale skin emphasized by a lifetime spent on Avon, a planet with perpetual cloud cover. He has, in the words of Jubilee Chase, “a chin so perfect it makes me want to hit it.”
Description: Flynn is the brother of an executed rebel leader, the reluctant heir to the rebellion on Avon. Surrounded by bitterly committed fighters (called the Fianna), he’s watching his people crippled by a lack of food and medicine, forced into unrelenting labor and kept from their loved ones. He’s losing hope of finding a non-violent way to make their voices heard, and around him, pressure is building for another rebellion. Vying for control over the Fianna with McBride, a man decades his senior preaching all-out war, Flynn is a pacifist in a world where peace is almost never rewarded.
Storyline: When Flynn stumbles on a mysterious facility, he ventures onto the military base in search of more information. From there, events snowball—caught by Jubilee, he’s forced to kidnap her, and then ultimately help her escape his own people when he’s unwilling to murder her.
Hair: Black, long, usually in a ponytail or braided.
Appearance: Of African/Chinese descent. Brown skin, sculpted features, with a soldier’s build and posture. Physically fit, strong, fairly tall… she’ll kick your ass if you look at her wrong.
Description: Born on a colony planet, Jubilee saw her parents killed in a rebel uprising, and her military career has been driven by a single-minded devotion to upholding order. She’s the only soldier on Avon to remain immune to the Fury, a violence-inducing rage that inevitably sweeps through all off-worlders on Avon. Jubilee knows that tensions in the colony are like a powder keg, and she plans on being there to prevent a catastrophic body count this time. She’s absolutely driven to uphold the fragile peace the military imposes.
Storyline: Lee Chase has always had a simple approach–she stays disciplined, and keeps her platoon safe. When she encounters Flynn Cormac, her lines start to blur. Committed and honorable in his own way, he’s everything rebels aren’t supposed to be, and she comes to realise he’s the only thing standing between his people and a war that would leave a huge body count on all sides.
And a few others…
Molly the Bartender: A three-hundred-pound Chinese guy with a tattoo of a Chrysanthemum on his neck. Loves his vintage jukebox, raised in a backwater country town, with an accent to match.
Sean Ahearn: Flynn’s cousin, best friend and right-hand-man. He’s a single parent to his orphaned nephew, a teacher to the rebels’ children, and a guerilla fighter.
Commander Antje Towers: The tall, blond, no-nonsense commander in charge of the primary military base on Avon. She knows more than she’s telling anyone.
Tarver Mer—Wait, what? You want to know whether you’ll see Lilac and Tarver again? Well, let’s just say that although their book might be done, their story certainly isn’t over yet…

Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are longtime friends and sometime flatmates who have traveled the world (but not yet the galaxy), covering every continent between them. They are sure outer space is only a matter of time. Meagan, who is also the author of the Skylark trilogy, currently lives in Asheville, NC, while Amie lives in Melbourne, Australia. Although they currently live apart, they are united by their love of space opera, road trips, and second breakfasts.
