Vampires of Manhattan: book party + giveaway

Melissa de la Cruz with her new book Vampires of Manhattan.

It was sweltering in Los Angeles today, but that didn’t stop Melissa de la Cruz’s book party for Vampires of Manhattan from being fun! I think the swanky vampires themselves would have approved of the gathering, which was attended by local LA authors, librarians, entertainment veterans, and a whole bunch kids who were very excited to be there.

Authors Leigh Bardugo, Jennifer Bosworth, Gretchen McNeil, Melissa de la Cruz, and Morgan Matson in Margaret’s Stohl’s pretty garden. Everyone looked sun-kissed and beautiful.

The garden party was hosted by Beautiful Creatures author Margaret Stohl, whose lovely home provided the perfect setting for this relaxed event. At The Ring and the Crown Tea I attended a few months ago, I was struck by how supportive all these LA authors are of each other, and it was really nice to see Allen Zadoff, Pseudonymous Bosch, Alyson Noel, Robyn Schneider, Leigh Bardugo, Jennifer Bosworth, Gretchen McNeil, Morgan Matson, and many others turn out in celebration of Melissa’s book.

Sharp-eyed fans will notice that Vampires of Manhattan is actually dedicated to Margie Stohl, and Melissa told me that without her, this book could never have been written. Friendships are a beautiful thing, and it’s always wonderful to see successful women standing together.

Guests enjoyed sliders and shaved ice from local food trucks, as well as themed St. Germain “Big Appletini” cocktails. I had the “Monkey Brains” shaved ice, which was strawberry-banana flavored with condensed milk, and Mr. Darling enjoyed the root beer float one. Perfect for a hot summer’s day.

Local independent bookstore Mysterious Galaxy was on hand to sell copies of Melissa’s books, and everyone congratulated her on the new release. It’s funny, because the television series The Witches of East End also airs tonight, and of course, that’s based on Melissa’s book as well.

Vampires of Manhattan is the first book in a spinoff series from her bestselling Blue Bloods series–what’s interesting is that VOM is adult, whereas the original series was YA. I’ve read the first 100 pages or so, and the best way to describe it is this: if the queen of glitz Jackie Collins was writing urban fantasy, this is the type of story she might’ve told! It’s a page-turning paranormal thriller featuring lavish lifestyles of the rich and famous, and Blue Bloods fans will find that familiar characters are all grown up and dealing with deception, murder, and lots of sexy times. It’s very easy to follow even if you haven’t read the other books yet, although you’ll obviously love it if you’re already a fan of Melissa’s books.

It was a very fun event, and both Margie and Melissa could not have been more gracious. LA may be laid back, but our authors know how to party, y’all. I wish you all could have been there to enjoy it, too.

I’ve been so interested in starting the Blue Bloods series and I love that she used some of the same characters for this adult novel! Very interested in reading this one – I love vampire books :)

Soy una gran fan de la autora desde que la descubrí por casualidad en una tienda de segunda mano de libros, realmente creo encontrar estas inesperadas historias en los lugares menos imaginados hace que toda historia tenga más valor

I hadn’t heard of this until just now!! It sounds amazing, and the Blue Bloods series is definitely on my TBR since I’ve just recently gotten into Melissa’s books (The Witches of East End!). I love the lavish lifestyle, I’m always drawn to those books for some reason. I love the fact that it’s an adult spin off for a YA original series as well, so interesting. Anyways it sounds amazing and I’ll definitely be picking it up very soon :)

This…is pretty awesome. I’m so glad you all get invited to all this fun stuff so we get to experience it too! =) And it was in another author’s home? I think I would have had to take a square of toilet paper home w/me or something!

I only read the first book in the Blue Bloods series a couple of years ago. I always did mean to pick up the rest but I got distracted by other books so I never got around to it. This book makes me want to go pick up the rest of them though. I love the idea that the characters have grown older and we can see where they’re going now. As for the party, I also wish I could have been there, it sounds like an amazing gathering. It’s amazing how all these authors support each other like this! Thanks for the giveaway! :)

  8. A Canadian Girl

I gave up on the Blue Bloods series midway through so I don’t know if I’ll read this one, Wendy, but the party sounded fun with lots of people and yet intimate in a way too. An ice-cream is a perfect dessert for the summer, and I’m jealous that you guys are still experiencing the heat. It’s cool in Toronto now!

Oh, and I love your nails :)

This sounds so interesting but I’m not sure if I want to go back and read the Blue Bloods series. This one sounds more up my alley. I hope you don’t need to read one before the other :(

Ah vampires. How I do love them. Always. So apparently I really should give these books a try someday. I’m planning on some seasonal reading for October so perhaps then. :)

And that cocktail? Seriously, anything with St. Germain GIVE IT TO ME. Actually anything elderflower at all. There’s a place near me that sells that awesome elderflower presse and it is heavenly. Also, I want Leigh’s dress. This looks like it was just delightful and so much fun. Glad you got to get out and have a nice time. :)

First – that party looks AMAZING! So chill and fab.

Can you believe I haven’t cut my teeth yet on a Melissa de la Cruz book yet? I KNOW. I know. This one sounds AMAZING though and I kinda miss vampire books in my life.

Ooh, pretty party and pretty people. Loooove it. Btw, you take the best photos, Wendy!

    Also, that nail polish! ^_^

Great post! Looks like everyone had a great time!

Have yet to read a Melissa de la Cruz novel, but I am a fan of her Witches of East End tv show. I may have to pick up one of her books in the near future. Sounds like VOM is a slight take on The Hills meets Vampires. Lol. I watched waaaay too much MTV reality shows as a teen.

I love this! That party looked really fun to be at. I mean, look at the shaved ice truck!! I also love how authors actually support each other, as mentioned. Melissa looked like she had a lot of fun and I bet she did. She’s such a success now what with Witches of East End on TV and everything. So proud (do I have a right to be though? HAHA proud anyway!)

I’m so excited to read this spin-off of Blue Bloods! I began reading Blue Bloods when I was in Middle School and grew up on the series, it was one of my very first YA reads. It’s really thrilling to see that world brought back to life in a new adult context.

  17. Sophia D

This synopsis looks like something I would totally get into and the cover art is gorgeous as well!

  18. Brenda

Looks like a very fun event and all the author support for each other is way cool. Plus, there’s food! Not sure what a Patty Wagon slider is but a “Big Appletini” sounds divine. Vampires of Manhattan sounds interesting too, I’m going to add it to the list for later so no need to enter me.

I didn’t get a good photo of it, but here’s the Patty Wagon food truck, Brenda! The appletinis were very good, made with real apple juice and St. Germain, not that sugary green stuff.

I always like seeing authors being supportive of each other, and I have to say, it’s extra nice when you live in a town like this where everyone’s scattered across different parts of the city and it can be hassle to get around. And it seems like there are a ton of events happening all the time! I see a lot of familiar faces at these things, though, it’s pretty nice.

      • Brenda

Thanks for the link Wendy! The food on their menu sounds yummy, but nothing like the real thing I imagine :)

  19. Carina Olsen

I love this post :D Looks like so much fun! And ack. That truck looks aaawesome. Though I am jealous. <3 Wants, hih. Thank you so much for sharing. <3 I'm glad you had an awesome time :) And ack. And hah, the bartenders were pretty cute. The one pictured was super charming, and there was another one with a British accent. That’s one of the nice things about LA, you can always be sure that everyone’s going to be pretty. ;)

  22. Sierra

I’m interested in this one because I have really enjoyed Melissa’s past books and I love the way she does vampires. I think this one will be a great read and the cover art looks stunning! Thanks for the giveaway. :)
