Our New Design (and celebration giveaway!)

The Midnight GardenNotice anything new at The Midnight Garden? We’ve been thinking about moving to WordPress for ages, and we finally did it!

About the Header

We are so happy with our lovely new custom header, which went through a lot of concept ideas and sketches with our illustrator until we settled on this design. It was important to us that the imagery captured our deep love for books, as well to set a certain tone for the blog.

Here are some fun facts about the process, which I thought you might enjoy:

  • We asked that the book the girl is reading to be made thicker.
  • There were four different colors for the book.
  • We made the girl take her shoes off. (Um–K wanted her to be naked, actually.)
  • The bird spying over her shoulder changed positions at least three times.
  • We reluctantly got rid of a very clever fox that I loved, because both K and Kate said (rightly so) that there’s something quite magical about the deer lying next to a girl who’s lost in her book.

Did you know, by the way, that The Midnight Garden is named after Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce? I always loved the fact that he discovered so many wonderful and mysterious things after dark, and here on this blog we celebrate the books that keep us up reading late, late, late into the night.

The header was designed by (redacted–I no longer recommend this designer), and we hired Ashley from Creative Whim to do the move since I was much too chicken to do it myself. They were both very patient with our many questions and requests, and we had a great time working with them.

Everyone at The Midnight Garden is going to be working on updating our old posts, so we appreciate your patience as we gradually prettify our older posts and get used to this new platform. I’d like to thank Kate especially for her incredible support throughout this process, critically, financially, and beyond. She’s an amazing asset to our team and we’re so pleased to have her on board.

I’m from Canada so I suppose it’s international giveaway for me?

Haha either way all of the books look great, so I’d love to win any of them.

Oh and the new banner is totally amazing (:

  2. Mary

Congrats on the redesign, ladies! I’d like to do one with my own blog soon, but time + funds, you know?I’m from the US, and out of the books you mention here, Perfect Ruin is my favorite and Red is the one I am most excited to read. As for what I would like to see more of, I know blog tours are incredibly difficult to organize, but I am LOVING your TBS tour. If all of yours are that detailed and well-run, I definitely want to see more TMG tours!

I love your redesign. I like the bird the most out of the animals. I’m from the U.S. and would pick the syfi bundle

  4. Em

    Your design is gorgeous!
I would be interested in the Contemporary bundle the most, but the Science Fiction/Fantasy bundle has some great looking books in it also!
    Thanks for the giveaway :-)

  5. Danielle D

Love the redesign! I’d love to see you do more read-alongs, like with The Book Thief! I missed out on that one and it’s on my Read-Soon list, so I’ll have to go back and see what you all posted.

Thanks for this opportunity too – I’m in the US and would love the Science Fiction/Fantasy bundle.

    • Wendy Darling

Actually, next year we’re planning to host a series of classic YA and MG readalongs! So maybe you’ll be able to join us for one of those. :)

Thanks for the feedback, and good luck with your entry!

  6. Kal/ Kalli

Awwwwww, I’ve been in anticipation of Sorrow’s Knot but there’s so many other books in each group that I wouldn’t know which one to pick! They all look pretty interesting to me.

I also love the new header. I’ve always loved watercolors and I feel like it fits so well with your blog. So cute. <3 (and it was fun to read up on how you got to the end product with the illustrator, heehee c: ).

  7. Jackie G.

Greetings from America, and pardon me while I stare lovingly at the header. It’s so pretty! I’m here for the reviews because you ladies are ace. As for for the books, I’m really keen on sci-fi right now. I think it has something to do with all of the Star Trek I’ve been watching.

Love the new look! I love how you have book reviews easily accessible on your home page and easy to navigate. It was also exciting to to read your Yallfest Recap. I had a blast at Yallfest, and I can’t wait to go again next year! I’m interested to see how you organize your previous reviews once the revamp is done. I would really like to win the Science Fiction/Fantasy set. Tons of great books to read!

  12. Paola Benavides

First of all, the blog design is beautiful :) I’m always online looking at book reviews and this site is one of my favorites. I’m in the US and I would like to win the Science Fiction/Fantasy bundle.

  13. Michele Piedrahita

OMG i WANT TO READ all of these book totally love half these authors cuz i have read some of their amazing stuff and i cant wait to fall in love with these other titles!!!!!!

  14. Ann

I absolutely ADORE the new design. It’s feminine, simple, and oh-so-classy. I love the deer!! I enjoy reading your favorites discussion posts and author interviews.

I am interested in the sci-fi/fantasy pack.

  15. Amber hsu

Congraulations on the new design! (Though I liked the old one too… especially the owl) The new design is so cute and pretty. I LOVE the color scheme…I think my favorite kinds of posts are actually the reviews~

I live in the US… I’d love the fantasy and sci Di bundle!

  16. Vanessa

I’m from Canada and I love the new design it’s so pretty. I would like to see reviews in different genres.

  17. Ellen M @ The Canon

I love your site. It’s so gorgeous! I actually stumbled across it the other day and became an instant fan :)I’m excited about Tumble & Fall, Some Quiet Place, and Trish Doller’s work – I haven’t read anything by her, but I’ve heard so much about her work that I’d love to try it! If I won, I’d love to get any of the bundles, but especially the sci-fi/paranormal bundle. Since I’m such a new follower, I’m not sure if I have any good constructive criticism. I was drawn to the gorgeous layout and the simplicity of your reviews, which is exactly why I’m going to stick around!

  18. Kate

I live in good ol’ Americuh, and what I’d love to see more of on the blog are y’alls group reviews. It’s one of my favorite things that we do on ours and the format was great when y’all discussed The Book Thief (and btw I still don’t forgive y’all for the Friday night of inconsolable sobbing when I finished that book).

I’m definitely interested in the Scifi bundle because there are at least three books in it that I’ve been desperate to read (especially Kass Morgan’s The 100).

  19. Brianna @ Listful Booking

I absolutely love the new look! I enjoyed the previous one, but there is something to be said about the simplicity of this new one. :) The header turned out great! I’m looking forward to more interesting reviews and learning about new (to me) books. Love you guys!

I think your new look is beautiful! I am a huge fan of whimsy. Love the deer(I actually spray painted some deer antlers my grandpa gave me last week), but I also love foxes, so I’m a little sad he didn’t make it in! =) I’m from the US, and I think the Science Fiction/Fantasy package looks fantastic! I’m excited to see that Erin Bow has a new book out. Thanks for running the giveaway! =)

  21. A Canadian Girl

I’m still on a hiatus but I’ve got some time to leave comments and noticed that your blog design changed! Eep, it’s so clean and pretty!!

  22. Skye

LOVE the new design! I am hoping that fox will pop up somewhere, however. He must be lurking around the blog somewhere!

I’m from Orlando and my favorite part of this blog are the spot-on reviews. I trust Midnight Garden reviews so much, they always steer me to books that I end up loving and warn me to stay away from those that I wouldn’t enjoy. Whenever I’m not sure about a book, I always check to see if one of you has read it first and what your thoughts are.

I’d be so excited to win either the sci-fi/fantasy bundle or the paranormal bundle. All those titles look interesting, especially Some Quiet Place and Shadows of Glass.

  23. Ashfa

I love the design! It’s soo pretty! I’m from Sri lanka an love your blog!

  27. Kayla Graham

I didn’t get to see what the blog looked like before the redesign. But I’ll say that I LOVE your blog design now! It’s so beautiful.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. sarabara081 @ Forever 17 Books

Oh I just love it so much! It’s so beautiful and magical! I love all the say you had in the illustration and I can easily still recognize this as The Midnight Garden. Good luck with your move to WordPress! I still have no idea what I’m doing half the time. lol

      Thanks for stopping by!

Kim @ YA Asylum recently posted…What’s Up Wednesday

    • Wendy Darling

Oh no, I understood what K meant about the girl being naked–it harkens back to the kind of beautiful imagery in classic fairy tales or art. As much as I liked the idea, I wanted to have a note of modernism/realism in it with her clothes, though. But I think the other way would have been an intriguing, and perhaps stronger, artistic choice.

I’m glad you like the new header though, Kim!

  40. Nikki

I really like the new design! I actually think it’s much more aesthetically pleasing and easy to read. I can’t believe there is an actual Sci fi/Fantasy bundle! I literally almost started jumping up and down with excitement, this looks to be a seriously AWESOME bundle :)

I am excited about Indigo and Mortal Fire. I’ve already read Some Quiet Place, and I enjoyed that a lot :)

It’s going to take us awhile to learn WordPress (so different from Blogger!), but we’re excited about all these tantalizing new options. Thanks for the feedback, and for the lovely words about our new look, too.

  44. Meliss

The new design is stunning in a simple, pretty way. Like a lot of books :) I love it. As for feedback, I adore your site and think you are doing everything right — Thank you! The fantasy/science fiction books call to me, but I would LOVE to read any of them. I live in the US.

Let me know if you need any help if you decide on making the move. :) Definitely recommend doing it over a not-so-busy time, though–we lucked out that we didn’t have any major issues, but I’ve heard of some serious hand-wringing from other bloggers.

  47. Katy H

It’s a big step, moving to WordPress, and one I hope to make in the future too. WordPress has such a cleaner look and tons of great benefits Blogger lacks.

And YES, I highly recommend the move to WordPress. There’s a definite learning curve, because I don’t think the interface is quite as intuitive as Blogger, but it seems like once you get the hang of it there are a ton of options. Just aesthetically alone, it’s worth it for us.

    • Wendy Darling

She would stagger under that book’s weight if she were standing up! I think it was originally the same size, but was so much thinner it looked more like a magazine. It is very sweet the way it is now.

    • Wendy Darling

I love you for saying you enjoyed our Debbie Downer readalong, Vivien! Hah. There actually have been discussions about launching a series next year in which we read classic YA and MG novels together…it would be very fun.

        • Wendy Darling

Hooray! I am happy to hear there’s interest in this. As Kate pointed out as we were discussing this, it’s kind of nice to talk about books that people can easily get from the library, or ones people can discuss from memory even if they aren’t specifically reading along.

          • Vivien

Plus you would be surprised at how many of the ‘classics’ that people haven’t read, myself included. I try to get a few in every now and then. It breaks up the massive pile of YA that I usually dive into. Also, I find it very intriguing to see how opinions change as we age, especially with classic novels. With MG it’s a completely different dynamic.

    • Wendy Darling

Thanks so much, Jess–I was looking at my correspondence with Julianna and we had around 100 emails about this, hah. I’m not sure what she thought of having clients who were so exacting about the shading of particular details, but we appreciated her openness to our edits, as well as how beautifully she brought our ideas to life. It was a great collaboration, though in the end the real talent is all hers.

I adore the new design! I love how feminine it is. I’m really looking forward to Perfect Ruin! I am in the US.

    • Wendy Darling

      Aw, thanks Bonnie!

And no one has ever asked me about the origin of the blog name either! I’d be very curious to see what you think of Tom’s Midnight Garden. It’s one of those books that does feel a bit dated, but I like the actual story quite a lot. I gave the book to a (male, early 30s) friend of mine a couple of years ago and he said it was hard to get into at first, but in the end was charmed by the plot.

Hello~ I’m from Hawai’i, so the US, haha. (Some people seem to forget that…) I just totally love the blog layout. Gorgeous! I think your blog is excellent. Would love to read some discussion posts about anything and everything regarding books, publishing, what have you. I like intellectual stuff. XD.

I would totally love to win the Sci-fi/Fantasy bundle! Tumble and Fall, Mortal Fire, Sorrow’s Knot, and The 100 all sound awesome!

I have an actual list of discussion posts I want to write about sometime, but for some reason I rarely get to it. I do agree, I like seeing those on blogs, too, when they’re done in a thoughtful way.

  68. Julie@my5monkeys

I adore your new look . Its simple but so beautiful and i love the header and the background. I am not entering the contest but just wanted to say its lovely. Congrats on the move to wordpress.

I absolutely love the new look ladies! So whimsical and I think it really captures the essence of the blog. I love all the awesome guest posts that you guys have here. You guys always have very unique topics and the posts just seem generally well thought out.

Also, Thanks for the thoughtful giveaway <3

We do rather luck out on quality guest posts, don’t we? I’ve gotten even more picky about the authors we invite to appear on the blog, as well as pickier about the tour invites I accept.

I always love your discussion posts, of course–big girls DO cry sometimes, and it’s glorious to know we’re not alone. :D

  70. Julie N.

I really like the new design! Very pretty. I’m from the USA and I love to read contemporary YA. Happy reading!

  71. ToryAnn Stutts

I love the new look, so pretty and cute! I would really love to win the science fiction bundle, but honestly any of the three would be amazing! I love the reviews on this blog. They are very helpful when I’m looking for new books to read. Thanks!

  72. Lyn Kaye

I am in the USA, and I actually like the discussion posts, such as the nightstand pictures and the baking posts. I really like to see them on this site!

If I won, I would love the Sci-Fi/Fantasy bundle.

Don’t be scared, Rebecca–it was all done in less than 24 hours! Of course I can say that because someone else did the actual migration for us, hah.

  73. Rashika

I am going to miss the old design but the new one is absolutely gorgeous. The header.. is just.. perfect. It’s magical, and the deer is just perfect.
Congratulations on moving to WordPress :)
    (and I’m International)

    • Wendy Darling

Thank you for saying that, Rashika–I am still very fond of that owl and those mushrooms and the colors and giant flowers, too. I like that our new design is so much more spacious and clean, though, so I’m glad you like our new digs, too! Thank you for stopping by.

And PS, if you’d like a bookmark with our old design (and hey, why not a new one, too?), I’ll totally send you one. Just email me your address if so (see Review Policies), and I’ll put them in the mail when the new ones get here!

  74. Randi M

I love the new design! It’s absolutely beautiful. It’s the kind of artwork that makes you want to live inside of it. :)

I’m looking forward to How to Love. (In the US.)

  75. Kate Bucklein

This place looks beautiful! I must say, I like it a lot. As for what I’d like to see more of, author interviews are always a plus. It’s so fun to see them in a different way than through their books. ^_^

I’m in the US, so…I’d kill for the sci-fi/fantasy bundle. Whoot! Thanks for hosting the giveaway.

  76. Amie

Ob I love your new design, really eye catching. The color schemes are so pretty, it gives the blog a fairy tale feeling. The header is definitely beautiful =)

I like all the features especially the blogger perspective, literary swoon and freebie alert.

I’m from the US. I’m really excited about How To Love and Where the Stars Still Shine but I’d be thrilled to win any of the bundles.

    Thanks for this giveaway.

  77. Nadia

The banner looks amazing! SOSO pretty! It goes well with the blog :)

Honestly I don’t know what I’d like to see more of in the blog, I feel like I’m already happy with what you girls have here. I love reading the author interviews and the sometimes mini-reviews bundle you post, but my favorite thing of all it’s the thoughtful reviews, I always trust what you girls have to say about a book, so to me that’s enough. And also, something else I think it’s very special about the blog and the bloggers is how much you interact with the readers, whether it’s on fb, twitter or through comments, that’s always awesome.

Keep up the good work! :)

    • Wendy Darling

Aw, that’s much appreciated, Nadia. We enjoy doing the interviews, too, and we try to write thoughtful reviews. I’m so backlogged on reviews that I’ve been writing more mini reviews lately because it’s the only way I’m going to get to them all, but…duly noted. :)

And yes, it’s very important to me that we are having a conversation about books with our readers, and not just throwing up whatever we think just so you can pat us on the back. There’s no reason for us to do this if we aren’t heard, and we sincerely enjoy hearing from our readers through all the different mediums…even if it is sometimes hard to keep up with, hah.

Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback.

  78. Amy F

Your website looks fantastic!! Congrats! :)

I’m really looking forward to Trish Doller’s Where the Stars Still Shine, but I’d be thrilled to win any of the bundles! Thanks for this giveaway.

  79. Cee

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new design. It’s so much spacious now! And that banner! I knew I recognized the illustrator. I adore Julianna Swaney’s work.

I’m from the US and would love a book from the science fiction/fantasy section.

    • Wendy Darling

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you recognized Julianna’s work! She has a very distinctive and beautiful style, we’re very happy she worked with us for this.

  80. Kimmy

I love the new header! It’s so gorgeous!

As I said earlier, loooooove the new design! It’s so clean and crisp, and your header is adorable. (Though I mourn the loss of the fox.)

I’m from the U.S., I’d love the Sci-Fi pack, and I think you all are doing a great job! I’d love even more reviews, because I love reading them, and maybe someday we can see the results of that blogger survey? :)

    • Wendy Darling

Thanks so much, Mary! It is such a dreamy header, I would totally read that picture book if someone wrote a story about it, hah. Appreciate your stopping by.

    • Wendy Darling

I knew my fellow fairy tale lover would like the header! Yay. And thank you, we get behind on things sometimes, but we’re trying to be more consistent in posting reviews more regularly. Vast improvement from last year, though. ;)

  84. KK Hendin

    Lovely, lovely, lovely new design!
In US and positively drooling over this contemp titles…
Your reviews are honest and wonderful, so thank you for that objectivity. Xo

  85. Lisa Farhana

AHHHHH, look how pretty everything is! Great job, ladies. I especially adore the blog header. There’s definitely something magical about that deer. Anyway, I’m from Malaysia! :)

  86. Ringo the Cat

The new design looks great: dreamy and magical at the same time.
I am in Belgium, and contemporary realism is my preference, so of those titles I’m most interested in Trish Doller’s book.
I enjoy author interviews, so I always like more of those.
Ringo the Cat recently posted…When the cat got to meet Patrick Ness!

    • Wendy Darling

Oh man, I really like our author interviews too, Ringo–but they take up so much time! And sometimes we receive the books so late that there isn’t time to read the book, write thoughtful questions, and get the answers back in time to publish in a timely manner. But yeah, we should try to do more of them when possible. Now that we have more writers and are posting more regularly, maybe I can take more of those on next year.

Thank you for the feedback–and good luck with your entry! (PS–the international giveaway is for a Book Depository book, but you may certainly choose the Trish Doller book as your choice if you win.)

  87. roro

I love the header. I would love to visit that magical pls. If I knew marry poppins I would surely go. Congratulations on the move.

I’m looking forward to shadow and glass. Int( suriname)

    • Wendy Darling

I would love to visit the place in our header, too! And/OR be acquainted with Mary Poppins, I have a serious love for those books.

  88. Miguel

I’m glad that you moved to WordPress and I love the new look! I’m from the Philippines and I really adore your blog! Kudos!

  89. Elaine (rabbitsfortea)

Yay for the move and the gorgeous design! The banner (and dividers!) really is magical, although I would have dearly loved to see the fox too :P

Giving my thanks from Singapore for making this giveaway international. You guys are awesome, as always.
I would love to see more ‘blogger perspectives’ like posts or personal favourites posts, because well, those are always fun for getting to know you guys better.

Jools (way above you) has persuaded me that we need that fox one way or another, so…maybe he’ll put in an appearance someday. ;)

I’d love to do more international giveaways, but you know how country restrictions and Wendy’s pocketbook goes…

And thanks, we really enjoy our favorites discussion posts, too. And I have a long list of blogger perspective things I keep meaning to tackle, so…yes. Feedback is appreciated, Elaine, thank you.

      • Elaine (rabbitsfortea)

        I will be looking forward to seeing this legendary fox then (;

Shipping alone is a huge problem (not to mention cost), which is why I’m always so grateful to the bloggers who hold international giveaways, however seldom or frequent they might be.

Oh don’t mention it, Wendy. I’m glad to be able to help out in any way possible. Looking forward to the future entries here!

Wow, I’m in love with your new design! Gorgeous! And how pretty would your design look like on a bookplate?! Thanks for sharing the fun facts about the design too.

I think all your posts are pretty thoughtful and special and can’t think of what I want to see more/less of at the moment. Congrats on the big move!

I’m not entering the giveaway, though the winners will be very lucky :)

The design WOULD make a lovely bookplate! Lucy, you’re a genius. The button I made using Julianna’s artwork actually looks a little bit like a bookplate, now that I think of it.

And thank you for the lovely comment, we think you’re pretty swell, too.

  91. Dahlia Adler

The new site looks GORGEOUS!!! Love the reviews, and you guys have revealed some of my very favorite covers, too! (And yes, I’m in the US and would love the Contemp bundle!)

    • Wendy Darling

I LOVE some of the covers we’ve revealed, too. It’s been really enjoyable helping to put eyeballs on a book’s official launch into the blogosphere for authors we appreciate.

And hah, I knew you would choose the contemporary bundle.
