The Book Thief: October Readalong

September 9, 2013 2013, markus zusak, readalong, the book thief, Wendy 80

Have you read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak? Horror of horrors, K, Tonya, and I have somehow never gotten around to reading this modern Aussie YA classic, so we thought it’d be a good idea to read it together in October. Since it’s a book that apparently provokes a lot of discussion and tears, we thought it’d also be great to read it with you.

If you’d like to join us, please let us know below so we can gauge interest! We’ve heard back from other newbies who will likely be reading along, as well as some die-hard fans who want to reread it before the film comes out on November 15th, 2013.

The Book Thief Readalong Discussion Schedule:

Friday, October 4       Page 123 (Part 3)
Friday, October 11     Page 303 (Part 6)
Friday, October 18     Page 403 (Part 8)
Friday, October 25     Page 550 (end)

Participants have about a month to get a copy of the book. The dates above show the approximate number of chapters we’ll be reading, and each week we’ll have a post with The Midnight Garden Girls’ thoughts along with a spirited discussion with you in the comments. This means that by Friday, October 4, you should have read the first 123 pages or so you can join the chat!

As you read, feel free to also use the hashtag #TBTreadalong if you urgently need to share your feeeeeels. (Our Twitter handles: @misswendyd, @k_delights, @awkwordly, @ladykatebond)

If you haven’t already seen the trailer for the film, by the way, it’s gorgeous!  Take a look:

Doesn’t it make you want to experience this story immediately? Read along with us before you’re one of THOSE people who only discovers a book after the movie version is released. ;) Our book nerd reputations are at stake.

I saw this mentioned on goodreads and it was the perfect motivation for me to finally pick up the book. So many people have recommended this book to me, yet it was just lying neglected on my shelves for months. I’m so glad you guys are doing this!

  2. Meg

I just saw the link to this readalong via goodreads. I hope to join you! I already own the book and will start reading it tonight. I’m excited to read it along others for the reasons you stated. Thanks for doing this!

  3. Debby

I will *probably* join. But I guess it’s a bit dependent on whether or not I can get to page 123 by Friday hahaa.

  4. Carina Olsen

I haven’t read The Book Thief yet either.. but ohh, I did love the trailer for the movie! Might have to buy the book :D But won’t be along for the read-a-long, since I do normally read a book in a day or two (A) wouldn’t be able to wait weeks to finish it. But love the post, still :D Thank you for sharing. <3

  5. Jae

I just came across this from another blog and I’m definitely interested! I’ve been wanting to read this book for some time so this would be a great incentive to get to it at last and discuss it with others.

  6. Alison

I wasn’t planning on seeing the film, but watching the trailer has swayed me. It looks gorgeous. Depending on how my October goes, I might participate in the readalong. But if it doesn’t work out, I’ve already read the book twice. :)

  7. Emmah

I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile and just haven’t gotten to it :/ Doesn’t help that I don’t own it haha. When I was flying to Chicago for vacation back in July, the person sitting next to me was reading it. So, I talked to her about it and want to read it even more!

  8. Donna Smith

I’m so surprised you haven’t read this! I can’t WAIT to hear what you think. I absolutely loved this story, it’s definitely one that stays with you for years after reading it, kind of like Ruta Sepetys Between Shades of Gray but I much prefer the writing style, and definitely the choice of narrator, of Zusak! I look forward to your updates and review.

  9. Rashika

I think I am in even though I am scared out of my mind. I might need to stock up on comfort food and tissues and pink fluffy stuff though.
I am pretty sure I’ll be needing it.

  10. Melanie

Melanie is very disappointed in all of you. She will be happy when you all read this aussie epicness- crying!

  11. Rachel

This is such a fabulous idea, Wendy, but I’m a terrible read-along partner. Plus, I don’t know if I could read this book without becoming a sobbing mess. :(

  12. Stacy

Well. If I needed motivation to read this book, this was timely. No, I haven’t read it yet. Reading now. But, at the rate I’m reading I figure I’ll be done with it in about 4 or 5 days. So I’ll have to skim for your read-along.

Will do! If I have time to join, I will. I mean, I don’t know which time zone applies to your event.

I love the book so far. Not to spoil things, but it’s very vivid. I can see the world unfolding inside my head. This one is dangerous, it sucks you in.

Oh, and I LOVED the trailer!

  13. Kimbo

Oh this is my current reigning Favorite Book of All Time. But, I read it 5 years ago and I’m curious to see what I’d think of it on re-read. I’d been meaning to read this again in October anyway so this is just perfect. Count me in!

  14. LisaFicTalk

I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile now and was tempted to choose it for my book club, but we’d recently read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas so I didn’t think we were ready for another book in that genre.

Would love to participate! Count me in. :)

  15. Tirta

This is such a great idea! I’ve been wanting to read the book for a veeery long time but don’t know why I haven’t started it already. Must be fun to do this readalong with lots of other readers as well :D

  16. starryeyedjen

Well, you already know I haven’t read it yet, so I will definitely be joining. =) I’d already been considering the audiobook, anyway. I’ve tried to find a used copy at my local HPB and one near my office to no avail. Guessing it’s so good that no one wants to part with their copy. :)

  17. Christina @ Christina Reads YA

I am joining! I think I ordered a copy, or the copy’s been sitting in my checkout box for a while, and it’s time for me to actually get it. I already commented on your GR announcement but figured I’d comment here too if you’re gauging interest :). Hopefully I’ll be all caught up with other review titles by October 4. If not, I’ll have to read 200 or so, I guess, and catching up only makes it harder o.O. I got behind in the Elementals series read-along that Cuddlebuggery hosted, but here’s to hoping that I’ll stay on target with you three when the time comes!

AND YES MY GOD THE MOVIE TRAILER. Honestly? Of all the YA adaptations coming out soon, even though I haven’t actually read this book, this one is the one I’m most interested in and looks best executed.

PS – I’ll have you know: my book nerd reputation is never at stake ;).

  18. Vidya Ravi

I would like to join this readalong as well. I got it as a gift for my husband last year, but I haven’t read it yet. I think this will be a good opportunity..

  19. Rizka

Oooh I am totally in! I’ve had a copy for a while now but somehow never thought of picking it up :/ So excited for this!

  20. Bookworm1858

Sounds like a great idea to get ready for the movie-I look forward to seeing your thoughts on the book as well as comparison to the movie.

  21. Nikki H

Yes! I will definitely participate! I haven’t read it before either but I want to get to it before it becomes a movie!

    • Wendy Darling

Yay! I’m so happy you’ll be joining us, Heidi. I expect that we’re going to see some fantastic discussions come out of this readalong.

  22. thebookwurrm

I would have done this with you but I’ve already read it and honestly, it was one of the very few books which actually made me tear up in real life. :\

    • Wendy Darling

      Heeeeeee.

Have you looked up the origins behind that expression, btw? My husband and I googled it this summer and we laughed ourselves silly.

    • Wendy Darling

Oh, tell me about it–Sept/October are so ridiculous publishing-wise and in real life! But I figured we’ll prod each other along, hah. Hope you can join in the discussions from time to time.

  23. Lisa Collins

Oh man. I’ve been meaning to read this book for the longest time. I definitely want to read it before the movie comes out. I’d love to join a readalong.

  24. Sana

I also somehow never got around to reading The Book Thief and this October seems like the perfect time to finally do so. I’ll be joining in and my reward for reading it will be watching the trailer for the first time ever. ;)

    So excited!

    • Wendy Darling

Right? It seems like a fall/winter kind of a read. And I like that you have a system of rewards, hah.

Btw–you won our Flights and Chimes and Mysterious Times ARC! I emailed you earlier tonight, I hope you got it.

    • Sana

I did the same thing with Vampire Academy recently but that trailer was a let down. So here I’m because this trailer should be good. Ha ha.

  25. ahz1

OK, I’ve been putting this book off for so long that I thought I was the only one that hadn’t read it yet. I think I’ll join in your readalong.

  26. Danielle

Ummmmm …. bit embarrassing since I’m an Aussie, but I’ve never read this one either. I do not know why (I can only think that when a book reaches a certain level of hype, I’m actually turned-off reading it *ahem* ‘The Bone Season’).

I may have to join you on this one :)

    • Wendy Darling

*gasp* Can they revoke your citizenship for that?!

I’m actually the same way regarding hype, though. And to be honest, I’m a bit worried since the pressure to love the book is so immense. But I’m determined to give this a go.

  27. Mary @ BookSwarm

I highly enjoyed this book but don’t know if I have time for a re-read at the moment. However, I’m excited about the discussion and hope I remember enough to participate! :)

    • Wendy Darling

Oh good–please do pop into the discussions if you can! I was saying to an author online (who’s joining the readalong) taht it’s always good to talk about this stuff with people who’ve had a chance to let the story sit with them for awhile.

  28. Becky LeJeune

Nice! I actually haven’t read THE BOOK THIEF but I ordered a copy after seeing the trailer a couple of weeks ago. This readalong is perfect timing!

  29. Mel@Thedailyprophecy

Oh boy, this is tempting. I haven’t re-read The book thief this year (something I’ve been doing for.. 3 years in a row now :p) I might go and join, so I can add this book to one of my reading challenges. This book is SO SO BEAUTIFUL. I’m happy to see more people are going to read it <3 Can't wait to hear what you think about it. Please don't break my heart and love it as much as I do, haha.

    • Wendy Darling

Ooo, let us tempt you, Mel! Hee hee. I hope you can join in! We make no promises about not trying to love it as much as you do, though.
