TAKEN: Chapter One Reveal + Download

March 25, 2013 2013, freebie alert, sci fi or futuristic, Wendy 68

Taken by Erin Bowman is one of the most highly-anticipated YA science fiction stories releasing this spring.

Thanks to our friends at HarperTeen, we’re pleased to offer our readers the opportunity to download and read the first chapter today!

We’re participating in the book’s official Chapter Reveal Week, where you can preview the first eight chapters of the book by following along the blog tour.

Synopsis: There are no men in Claysoot. There are boys—but every one of them vanishes at midnight on his eighteenth birthday. The ground shakes, the wind howls, a blinding light descends…and he’s gone.

They call it the Heist.

Gray Weathersby’s eighteenth birthday is mere months away, and he’s prepared to meet his fate–until he finds a strange note from his mother and starts to question everything he’s been raised to accept: the Council leaders and their obvious secrets. The Heist itself. And what lies beyond the Wall that surrounds Claysoot–a structure that no one can cross and survive.

Climbing the Wall is suicide, but what comes after the Heist could be worse. Should he sit back and wait to be taken–or risk everything on the hope of the other side?

Pretty cool concept, isn’t it? Judging by the early buzz, this book has a pretty interesting twist that will keep a lot of readers guessing.

Taken has been on my NEED list ever since I first heard of it. I am really excited to read this one. I’ve heard many mixed reviews, but I am completely drawn to the synopsis and cover! I am always drawn to chapter reveals that happen before a book comes out but when its a book that I have been anticipating, I try to avoid them because it is just such a tease to read a chapter or two and then have to wait for the rest. I would rather take the whole book in at once!

I love that HarperTeen is allowing book bloggers to reveal the first 8 chapters! I’ve been dying to read this and what better way to stir up book buzz than by giving readers a big chunk of the book to start reading! They obviously know what they are doing :) Nobody will be able to read all 8 chapters and then not want to go buy the whole book!

    • Wendy Darling

Heh. Part of me understands this completely, hah. To each her own! Easy enough to download the entire book on 4/16. :)

  3. Karin Perry

I really enjoyed this book. I read the eGalley from NetGalley. I loved the idea of a well…that might be too spoilerish. Anyway. Nice job by the author.

    • Wendy Darling

I know exactly what you’re referring to, hah. It will be interesting to see everyone’s reaction to that. ;) Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Kim (YA Asylum)

I cannot wait to read this book! I’ve been so excited ever since I started to follow Publishing Crawl. It sounds sooo good and I’ve heard a lot of great things about Gray.

    • Wendy Darling

Oh, the Pub Crawl peeps are so fun! I really like the blog and whoever mans their social media. I’m curious what you’d think of this one, Kim.

  5. Book Wookie

So jealous you’re on this blog tour! I have been waiting for this one for a long time now. The cover just floored me and the synopsis delivered the knock-out blow. Can’t wait to read the teaser chapters!

    • Wendy Darling

Hopefully a lot of our readers will be diligently following the tour and stopping by your place for Chapter 4, Shane! Yay. :)

  6. Amy

I’m so excited to read this book. I am lucky and have an ARC of it so I will be reading it soon!! I think it’s really great to give a sneak peek to get people interested!!

    • Wendy Darling

I’m so glad you already have a copy, Amy! And yes, this type of blog tour is so easy and makes so much sense, and it satisfies just about everybody. :)

  7. starryeyedjen

I really love being able to sample a book before I buy. It’s great to get a taste of the author’s style to see if it’s a good fit. Luckily, I already have a copy of this one, and I should be reading it soon…assuming I don’t get sidetracked by some other shiny new book. :) Thanks for sharing!

    • Wendy Darling

Oh, excellent! There ARE a few books I’ve been waiting for you to finish so I can hear what you thought, but with April 16 coming up soon for this one, I know you won’t leave this too far behind, hee hee.

  8. Vivien

This is awesome!! I absolutely love being able to get a sneak peak. For me, I read daily, so I’m always buying books. It’s really helps to be able to see if this is going to be something for me or not. Can’t wait!

    • Wendy Darling

Yeah, previews are always so helpful–I have done many a one-click for my Kindle based on them. Especially late in the night, when my defenses are down. ;)

  9. Tanja - Tanychy

Luckily I have this book so I’ll be reading it soon. It’d drive me crazy to read first 8 chapters and then wait :D Thanks for sharing :)

    • Wendy Darling

Hurry up and read it, Tanja! And hah, I’m the same way–sometimes if I’m unsure about whether I want a book I like having the previews, but if I know I definitely want something, reading teasers just drive me crazy!

  10. Steph Su

What a great idea for a blog tour, and very tempting! Are you going to review this one, Wendy? Think I may wait for your review before deciding whether or not this one’s for me.

    • Wendy Darling

Yes, I’ll post a quick review at some point! I’m sure you’ve seen some of the others that have been coming through, too. I’m glad readers are going to be able to sample the book through these chapter previews.

    • Wendy Darling

I love bringing YA books along for vacation reading, it just makes your time off go all that more pleasurably. My husband reads things like Murakami novels on vacation, hah.

    • Wendy Darling

I really like that cover, too! I don’t really know what’s happening in it, hah, but the image and colors are really appealing. I hope you get a chance to read it soon, Rachel.

  11. Kay

So exciting and this is awesome! I can’t wait to read this book. Now off to read the first chapter.

  12. Keertana

I used to be really excited for this one, but then all the initial reviews trickled in and I knocked it off my shelf. I feel like although this has a great concept, I won’t enjoy it too much which is a shame. Still, thanks for sharing, Wendy! :)

    • Wendy Darling

Well, friend reviews (and preview pages!) are so helpful for that reason. It’s funny though, most of my friends have really enjoyed it so far, and the book has very high ratings. Should be interesting to see what happens as more people have a chance to read it.

  13. Lauren @ Love is not a triangle

I met Erin Bowman at an event – she lives nearish to me – and she was so incredibly sweet and nice. I also love that this book is a male POV, and it sounds interesting. However, I’ve also heard that there is a frustrating love triangle, so I won’t be reading this one (bummer). Perhaps as we get further into the series, I will feel differently!

    • Wendy Darling

I’m not in direct contact with the author, but I have seen many reviews written by her in passing on GoodReads, and I appreciate any author who actually READS. (So funny how so many of them don’t seem to, or at least make no mention of it.) And who takes the time to review on top of that! She does seem to be really sweet from what I’ve seen.

  14. readingdate

What a fun blog tour! Great way to sample the book. The male POV intrigues me, and I like the name Gray. Thanks for sharing :)

  15. Emma

I’m so excited for a boy POV! The premise sounds unreal and so so good. Thanks for the chapter reveal! It got me addicted instantly! I can’t wait to read this book, it’s been on my list for SO long!

  16. Ems

I’ve been dying to get my hands on this one for ages – thanks for the chance to download a chapter! Perfect chance to decide if this one is worth ordering.

    • Wendy Darling

Oh, our pleasure! It was awesome of HarperTeen to make this available so people can see if the opening chapters hook them. I’m glad you downloaded a copy.

  17. Sam

Ahh thanks, Wendy! I’ve been going back and forth with this book (I’m still not sure if I want to read it), but it’ll be helpful to get a taste of the writing before making a decision. :) I agree that the concept’s pretty cool. And let’s not forget that cover! It’s stunning. :)

    • Wendy Darling

Sure thing! I always like excerpts for just that reason, being able to sample the writing. It’s usually a pretty good gauge of whether the rest of the book will work for you.

And agreed–I really like the cover art, especially with the non-traditional covers. I guess with a male POV they couldn’t do the more typical girl in a ballgown image, hah.

  18. Sara @ Forever 17 Books

This has been one of my most anticipated spring releases! I’ve been craving a read like this too, something a little more dystopian. The sci-fi’s I’ve read lately have dealt more with like androids and such. Plus, I love a good boy POV. Thanks for the chapter reveal!

    • Wendy Darling

The number of YA scifi books out this spring is staggering. STAGGERING! This one definitely is one of those with a lot of buzz, though. And hah, no robots here. ;)

  19. Molli Moran

Ahh, I LOVED this one. I am legitimately SO excited for people to read TAKEN. Thanks so much for being part of the reveal, Wendy! Y’all rock.

    • Wendy Darling

I’ll be on the lookout for your review, Molli! Just one more week before everyone can get a copy, and it’s nice we are able to offer this preview in the meantime. :)

  20. Jenni @ Alluring Reads

I am so excited to read this one, I have loved the cover since I first saw it and the premise sounds awesome. I also like this feature to bring attention to the book, that’s some good marketing! Thanks for sharing!

    • Wendy Darling

Blythe loved it, I’m very curious to see what you think when you read it, Jenni! And yeah, the gradual chapter reveals are pretty cool. Such a simple but clever idea.

  21. Pili

Ok, the premise had me in stitches, and now that I’ve read the first chapter I’m even more excited about the book!

    • Wendy Darling

I love that Harper is letting everyone get a sneak peek at the book in this way. :) It’s a pretty generous preview–8 chapters total!
