Eleanor & Park reminded me not just what it’s like to be young and in love with a girl, but also what it’s like to be young and in love with a book.”—John Green, The New York Times Book Review

Bono met his wife in high school, Park says.
So did Jerry Lee Lewis, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be, she says, we’re 16.
What about Romeo and Juliet?
Shallow, confused, then dead.

I love you, Park says.
Wherefore art thou, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be.

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love—and just how hard it pulled you under.

Part of me wants to quote the entirety of John Green’s NYT review of Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell and just call it a day, because he said everything I’m thinking anyway. (And much more eloquently than I ever could.)

But I’ll just echo this: you’ve read this book before.
You’ve read the Misfit Boy meets the New Girl With Issues story before. You know the Big Girl Finds Love book by heart. You’ve read all about The Struggles of the Minority Boy in Middle America.

But you’ve never read it quite like this before.

Set during one school year in 1986, Eleanor & Park is a revelation of what YA contemporary can be. It’s gritty. It’s foul-mouthed. It’s awkward. It’s real.
There are no great philosophical speeches showcasing their elevated vocabularies. Neither of them do anything particularly special. Except love each other in such an ordinary way it makes you remember just exactly how extraordinarily, wonderfully painful that feeling of first love is.

If he were to look up now, he’d know exactly how stupid she was. She could feel her face go soft and gummy. If Park were to look up at her now, he’d know everything.

He didn’t look up. He wound the scarf around his fingers until her hand was hanging in the space between them.

Then he slid the silk and his fingers into her open palm. And Eleanor disintegrated.

Holding Eleanor’s hand was like holding a butterfly. Or a heartbeat. Liking holding something complete, and completely alive.

The build between Eleanor and Park is so quiet, so gradual, every tiny development is like a thunderclap shattering a still night. I want to fold up every hard-fought, hard-won word between them and carry them around in my pocket for safekeeping. (And their fragile, earnest little hearts, too.)

I feel as though I could go on forever about this book, but I want you to experience it for yourself. (I feel bad even posting that quote.) I want you to experience every moment of tension, or hesitance, of joy. Of pain, and fear, and bravado. I want you to feel their strength and their passion. I want you to feel UNSETTLED.

And then, when you’re all done and are bursting to talk to someone about how much you loved it, I want you to come find me so we can discuss what is probably the most romantic line I’ve ever read.

Sigh.

This book was a wonderful balance of sweet and real. I read a few days ago and completely fell in love with it. Your review captures everything I liked about it.

I not one who falls for romantic lines, I like simple plain I love you’s.

  2. Salma

    I don’t have a favorite romantic line, I like plain old I love you’s.

I read this book a few days ago and adored it. It’s good balance of sweet and real. Your review captures everything I enjoyed it.

  3. Salma

    I don’t have a favorite line, I like simple I love you’s.

I just finished reading this book a couple of days ago and I adored it. It’s one of the sweetest teen romances I’ve ever read. Your review captures everything I liked about it.

  4. Aman

“That was it? The whole story?”
“Yes. God, you’re right. That was pants.”
I sidestep another aggressive couscous vendor. “Pants?”
    “Rubbish. Crap. Shite.”
    Pants. Oh heavens, that’s cute.”

    Anna and the French Kiss.
It isn’t very romantic but it’s one of my favorite quote.

  5. Kaede

“This time when we kiss, I’m ready. I want it, and I sink into him immediately…It’s not MTB. It’s better.”
    – Meant to Be, Lauren Morrill

Right now that’s probably my favorite romance line at the moment. And I swear it’s not because I really, really want to read the book. Or because it was the first thing I remembered.

    I SWEAR.

LALALALALA – I never said anything. Whatever do you mean?

  6. Caitlin

When I was reading this I was so worried it was going to turn into a sob-inducing, angst-ridden, mountain of horrible at the end. And it certainly had it’s moments of not-adorable. But I think the author did a really, really good job of treating the situation with the severity it needed without ruining what the story set out to be. And that alone made it so awesome!

Thanks for the chance to win a hardcover…that presumably didn’t have an unfortunate run in with chocolate milk like my ARC did.

  7. Jacklin updegraft

I’m not sure if this is a romantic line…. But it’s from This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen it says “Some things don’t last forever, but some things do. Like a good song, or a good book, or a good memory you can take out and unfold in your darkest times, pressing down on the corners and peering in close, hoping you still recognize the person you see there.” The other one is “Holding people away from you, and denying yourself love, that doesn’t make you strong. if anything, it makes you weaker. Because you’re doing it out of fear.” This one is amazing!

  8. Shani K.

I completely agree with you that John Green just conveys my own feelings for this book perfectly in that NYT review. One thing particularly stuck with me: ” “Eleanor & Park” reminded me not just what it’s like to be young and in love with a girl, but also what it’s like to be young and in love with a book.”

I mean, I still think about it and get all the FEELS and I read it over a month ago!

  9. Swept Away By Books

Hmmm I don’t have an absolute favourite but i’d have to say anything from Clockwork Princess recently. It was chock full of amazing lines. OR The Notebook- basically the whole book.

  10. Jo DM

I really really really want this book <3 I've read so many wonderful things about it and John Green recommendation is just enough to make me love it :P Not really but still, I want it, I really hope I win it :)

  11. sinmotion

My top romantic line of this book was probably the Boba fett line.

What i don’t understand is whay so many people have it on their fluff shelf. I found it a lot more angsty than fluffy…though the sweet parts were oh so sweet.

  12. Jenna D.

I am currently reading E&P – and so far my favorite romantic line EVER is from this book:

“Eleanor was right. She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.”

THAT is how I would love to be described…

  13. Lisa (Lost in Literature)

This book was amazing. I just listened to it last week on audio. I’d LOVE to have a permanent hard copy for my shelf. I haven’t written my review yet, I’m still working on it. I’m trying to keep it from being overly gushing. :) It may be my favorite contemporary so far of this year. It was so beautiful, and so real, and so touching. :)

  14. Beth

My favorite romantic line is definitely this one from Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier:

“He would have told her – he would have said, it matters not if you are here or there, for I see you before me every moment. I see you in the light of the water, in the swaying of the young trees in the spring wind. I see you in the shadows of the great oaks, I hear your voice in the cry of the owl at night. You are the blood in my veins, and the beating of my heart. You are my first waking thought, and my last sigh before sleeping. You are – you are bone of my bone, and breath of my breath.”

Sorry it’s so long, but the effect is better if you get the whole thing!

    Beth

  15. iLuvReadingTooMuch

Hehehe from one of the Princess Diaries books by Meg Cabot – “The fact is, I love him. He’s the boy I want and one day he’ll be MINE.” Totally sums me up :P

    ANDD…

I’m usually team Ash, but these were one of my “team Puck” moments which I LOVE – from The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa

“Why?” I whispered. “Why do you hang around? You and Ash could’ve died
    today.”
Puck’s heartbeat sped up under my fingers. His voice, when it came, was
very soft, almost a whisper. “I would’ve thought you’d’ve figured that out by now.”

    Thanks for the amazing giveaway!

    Rabiah

  16. 1234

My all-time favorite romantic line is from Ally Carter’s GG5, Out of Sight, Out of Time. Its dialogue between Cammie and Zach, in which Cammie says “Where did you go? When you were looking for me?” And his response is “Crazy. I went Crazy.” And every time I read that I get goose bumps and chills and butterflies in my stomach because it’s so perfect.

  17. Leannessf

I know it’s cheesy, but “you complete me” blew it away the first time I heard it and still does!

    Thanks,
    Leanne

  18. Brandy Graves

I have heard such great things about this one. At first I was indifferent about how soon I wanted to read it, but the more I think about it the more I want to get my hands on a copy of it asap.
A *favorite* romantic quote? Too many to choose. So I’ll just randomly pick one I love:
“You swallow her with your eyes. I’m surprised there’s any of her left for the rest of us to see.”
From: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater :)

Brandy @ A Little of the Book Life

  19. Jaime Lester

I was never really into contemporaries, or romances. Until I read the beautiful The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. It hooked me on the contemporaries. And I am always on the search for stories that touch my heart like that one did. I have read a ton of great contemps since, but only a very select few have hit me the same way as Jandy’s book. From the reviews that I have read, and just the synopsis itself, I have this feeling that Eleanor & Park is going to hit me like I like. Thanks so much for the fantastic giveaway!

  20. emcrose

Oh, I also love this one from one of JD Salinger’s short stories: “She wasn’t doing a thing that I could see, except standing there, leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together.”

  21. emcrose

My favorite romantic line would probably be a letter (I’m a sucker for love letters!). I love Wentworth’s letter in Persuasion, as well as Char’s letters in Ella Enchanted.

  22. Michelle Morris

My favorite romantic line from a book is from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I think it captures the essence of falling in love perfectly:

“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”

  23. from me to you

My favorite romantic line from a book is:

“Some of us get dipped in flat, some in satin, some in gloss….” He turned to me. “But every once in a while, you find someone who’s iridescent, and when you do, nothing will ever compare.”
    ― Wendelin Van Draanen, Flipped

What I love about this line (and this book) is that it recognizes people like Juli who are exceptional, not only in their uniqueness but in their fearlessness to be who they are. I must have read this in seventh grade (I’m a sophomore in college now, so it’s been quite a while), but I’m such a such a sucker for cute stories about couples that have known each other all their lives. I’ll never forget this book.

  24. xDarithz

He shook his head, just looking at me.
    “What?” I asked.
    “Nothing,” he said.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Augustus half smiled. “Because you’re beautiful. I enjoy looking at beautiful people, and I decided a while ago not to deny myself the simpler pleasures of existence.”

~ Augustus Waters of The Fault in Our Stars

I <3 this book! Thanks for the giveaway!

  25. Sam

This is a fantastic review! I keep meaning to read this one, but I think I definitely have to force it into my schedule now. Eleanor and Park already sound like characters I can invest in, and I like that they’re a little different from the norm. Plus those quotes that you shared have melted me a little!

  26. innocencewalker

My friend just rec’ed this to me!

Favorite quote tho… that’s hard. Maybe this:

“… I thought no one would want to listen to me. I thought they’d laugh if I talked about things like life. But George is different… those kids at the studio are different… after all, they are living the life they’ve chosen for themselves. I wish I was like them. I wish I could live like them…” ” — Hayasaka ‘Caroline’ Yukari – Paradise Kiss.

Not quite romantic but… it’s very important to the romance between Yukari and George I feel.

  27. emminy

Hands down all-time favorite romantic quote: “in vain have I struggled, it will not do, you must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” ~Mr. Darcy

  28. caitlinsbooks

Favorite romantic line is “It had allowed to me to hope as I had scarcely allowed myself to hope before” -Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. Swoon!

  29. Lottie Eve

Like I have said before: lovely review, Tonya! I think I am already in love with the book because of you :) Thanks for sharing that quote. Made me swoon!

And after much debate I have picked the quote I will use!
“‘..there are so many books to write,’ he said with wonder. ‘So many stories to tell. And I would write them all, even if only you were to read them, Persimmon…'”
The quote is from The Three Loves of Persimmon by Cassandra Golds and is from the part when Persimmon meets who true love–who just happens to be the author of her favorite book (a book that has been avoided by the public because a famous, harsh critic gave it a negative review).

  30. Alexju

Oh jeez I don’t know what my favorite line is! So many isn’t there? I have been dying to read this book and I can’t exactly put into words why but I think it’s just the story and the writing behind it, reading excerpts, I don’t know I just fell in love! So thank you so much for this giveaway and the review.

    • tonya

It’s one of those books that just grab you, isn’t it? I hope you can read soon! :)

  31. Tiffany Drew

I don’t think I have just one favorite romantic line, there are just too many good ones and I am a serious sucker for romance. My sister is currently reading this book and has told me it’s good so I can’t wait to read it for myself. Thank you!

  32. Bookworm1858

When I finished this, I just hugged my nook close to me (I read an e-ARC)-I could not believe the way this book made me feel and I have been highly recommending it.

  33. lilysbookblog.com

I have this one on my TBR pile on my shelf. John Green just raved about this one (though i wanted to read it before) but when John Green raves about a book you know you have to READ IT! I’m glad you like this one and that it’s awkward and true and cute and refreshing. I’m not expecting to go in and read a happy story with no problems, I’m expecting a realistic one that touches the heart and I have a feeling it will!
    Lily @ lilysbookblog

  34. Rachel Edmundson

“You love me, real or not real?

    I tell him, Real”

    Obviously from The Hunger Games.

If I am being honest, at first I wasn’t super excited about this book, but after every review I have read, I can’t wait. It just seems like such a great love story. Plus, like you said, I can’t wait to talk to you about it after I read it!

    • tonya

Yes, please come find me! I can’t talk about my love for E&P enough.

And is there a sweeter book boy than Peeta? <3

  35. Sara @ Forever 17 Books

I just loved this book! The characters were magical and full of charm and heartbreak.

I don’t have a favorite line but pretty much anything from The Fault in Our Stars I love. One of my favorites for Eleanor and Park is :

‘Eleanor was right: She never looked nice. She looked like art, and art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.’

    Oh, and:

‘”No.” She lifted up her chin. “No… I just want to lie low, you know? Like as long as I stay out of his way, I’m fine. I just have to be invisible.”
    Park smiled.
    “What?” she asked.
    “You. Invisible.”
She smiled. He let go of her hands and held her face. Her cheeks were cold, and her eyes were fathomless in the dark.
She was all he could see.’

    • tonya

My heart is all a-flutter. I just love those two so much. You make me want to reread right NOW.

  36. Mandy

I’ve been following your flails over this book for a while now—I definitely need to read it if it’s as awesome as you say. (And I believe you, since you have great taste.)

One of my favorite romantic lines (And since I’ve been on a P&P kick lately) is from the 2005 movie version of Pride and Prejudice: “You have bewitched me, body and soul.”

    • tonya

Yes, yes you do! I hope you read soon. You will love it, I know. There’s a Doctor Who reference!

  37. SweetMarie83

What a fantastic review! I’ll admit I didn’t pay much attention to this book at first – I saw it around but didn’t read the synopsis or any reviews. Then when I found out what it was about, I was like ‘you dummy, this book was practically made for you!’. Now I’m still waiting to get my hands on a copy, and I’m going to remember this review, and when I love the book, as I inevitably will, I WILL come find you and talk about it. :-)

    ~Marie @ Ramblings of a Daydreamer

    • tonya

Yes, please do! I wasn’t really sure what I was in for before I read, but about ten pages in I realized it was basically written for me. The Smiths, and comic books? Hello, lovers.

  38. the superhero princess

80’s highschool stories are my *favorite*. (I could watch The Breakfast Club everyday. Also Freaks and Geeks) I must read this book.

My favorite romantic quote, however, is from Jane Austen. From my favorite Austen hero, Captain Wentworth:

“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W.”

  39. the superhero princess

I want to read this book so badly! I love 80’s highschool stories!!! They are my favorite. I could watch The Breakfast Club every day. Also Freaks and Geeks.

My favorite love/romantic quote, however, is from my favorite Jane Austen book, Persuasion.

40. Shelver506

Man, everyone seems to ADORE this book. With your name added to the list, I definitely need to get off my rump and check it out.

And oh my gosh, I can’t pick one favorite line! There are entire CHUNKS from King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner that just turn me into goo. Goo, I say!

    • tonya

You’re the second one to mention that book! I suppose I’ll have to add it to my ever-growing list. :)

  41. Jolene and Family

I think this sounds like an amazing read and I really enjoyed your review! It makes me want to rush out and buy this! My fav. romantic line ever is You Complete Me. Nothing tops that :)

  42. Renae M.

The nearly unanimous love for this book convinved be to break my very strict ban on book buying. (I haven’t managed to pick it up yet, though.) Strictly speaking, I’m not a fan of books that focus only on romance, or where romance is a big player. However, it seems like not only is this book well-written, it’s done in a way that is realistic and heartfelt.

Beautiful review! (And I’m actually glad you shared the quote—it made me much more excited to pick it up.)

    Renae @ Respiring Thoughts

    • tonya

The focus is very heavy on romance in E&P, but also on the growth and strength of the characters, and their discovery and acceptance of themselves through the eyes of the other. it isn’t as cheesy, or one note as some YA romances can be. There is so much depth to their relationship. I’m glad you’re giving it a try, I think you’ll be surprised how much you like it. :)

  43. Cajun Cutie

I am exited about this book and will have to run out and buy it if I don’t win. I have been in love with Cassandra Clare’s novels since they first came out(my books are being held together with duct tape and rubber bands) and there are many good things in them including this…
“There is no pretending,” Jace said with absolute clarity. “I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I’ll love you then.”
    -Cassandra Clare (City of Glass)
this is currently making my warm fuzzy secret heart melt. if you have not read these books you should soon.

    • tonya

That quote gives me shivers every time I read it.

I love seeing books that are well loved. I have quite a few holding-on-by-threads books on my shelf, as well.

  44. Savannah Bookswithbite

Hmmm, my all time f ave romantic line in a book has to be where Bones is telling Cat,” I may be mad at you, but I still want you. I’ll shagg you right here, right now and sod anyone who wants to watch.” LOL, gotta loves Bones.

  45. Jude

My favorite romantic line from a very recent read is “You are the best kind of person.” from Speechless by Hannah Harrington. It was just so sweet and perfect and adorable and I loved it. Although I’m seeing a lot of other good lines from other commenters (like the Augustus Waters one–augh! Swooning all over again!).
I want to read this book because it just sounds so good and sweet and exactly like my type of book–and it helps that John Green said good things about it, too.

Thanks so much for the giveaway!
    :) Jude

  46. A Canadian Girl

Ooo, I haven’t heard about this one but I’ll definitely be checking it out. I love books with subtle romances that are extraordinarily ordinary. Thanks for the recommendation, Tonya!

“When I carved this, my thoughts were on you, love. Your life is like this snake’s coils. No matter how many turns it makes, you’ll end up back where you belong. With me.” – Valek, Magic Study

I love the way he calls her love, because it’s just so romantic :’)

I’m a sucker for romance novels, especially if they’re very good. Marking this book as to-read!

    • tonya

I am such a sucker for romance. Make me swoon, and you’ll have a fan forever.

      Great quote!

  48. Cee L

I am most excited about the era the book is set in and Eleanor + Park’s growing relationship through music. It reminds me of My Mad Fat Diary!

  50. Joie

My all-time favorite romantic line?! But I have so many!
Probably a tie between Augustu Water’s “I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.” quote or Will Herondale’s “We live and breath words” speech.

  51. Starflowerz17

I don’t have a favorite line. But, I can’t wait to read this book! I’ve heard amazing things about this book and the cover is really cute. It just sounds AWESOME! :D

  54. Sarah Johnson

Incredibly cheesy, but The Notebook has some of my romantic quotes ever. My favorite is
“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this everyday, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, everyday. You and me… everyday.”

    But the very simple
    “If I’m you’re a bid…I’m a bird” is a close second.
I love cute romantic books and I really want to read this book for some reason.

    • tonya

The great thing about The Notebook is when I read those quotes, I hear them in Ryan Gosling’s voice. ;)

  55. Alexa Y.

I absolutely adored Eleanor & Park. Their relationship and how it felt to them both reminded me of how it had felt to me when I first fell in love. There was something utterly authentic about their feelings and how it was expressed. Loved it!

  56. Jae Lee

I think Blogger ate my comment.

I loved Attachments like, a lot a lot, and I am super excited to read this (although I am less excited about being 26th in line for it at the library). Stories about awkward, geeky young love ftw.

  57. Sophia

Okay, that is IT! I’ve heard far too many amazing things about this book to just sit still. I need this book asap! Everyone’s just been gushing over it, and I have decided that I need to read it. This book sounds incredible. Wonderful review!

  58. Jae Lee

I can’t think of a particular line at the moment, but I am so excited to read this book (I am less excited about being 26th in line for it at the library). I loved, loved, loved Attachments and I am really looking forward to more from Ms. Rowell.

    • tonya

I need to read Attachments soon! I just realized it was an adult book, so I’m looking forward to it.

Good luck in the giveaway! :)

Apparently I need to read John Green’s review. Although I think your review does a good job explaining how touching and poignant first love can be in everyday situations. I definitely plan on reading this book myself at some point! And thanks for the giveaway!

Here’s what I consider to be one of my favorite romantic lines (from Sharon Shinn’s Archangel):
“She had chosen the song for him.
    She loved him.”

    • tonya

      That’s a lovely line.

I hope you can read E&P soon! John Green does such a great job explaining how it makes us remember what it’s like to be young and in love.

  60. Maji Bookshelf

This book was just so so so so beautiful! and you picked SUCH an amazing quote <3 Their relationship was just so innocent and pure and new and beautiful AH! I need more books like this!!

    – Juhina @ Maji Bookshelf

    • tonya

YES. I was feeling everything right along with them. So beautiful. I need to reread soon.

  61. Chrystal

I love your review. I keep seeing this book everywhere and feel like I’m the only one who didn’t know about it.

One of my fave quotes is:
“The heart is a compass, steers us back to the thing we loved the most.”
    ― Holly Schindler, Playing Hurt

    • tonya

That’s a lovely quote. I love the sentiment.

I think the buzz for E&P came about rather all at once. But you’re in the know now. ;)

  62. Kay L

I loved this book. I’ll leave one of my faves quote from this book

“You can be Han Solo,” he said, kissing her throat. “And I’ll be Boba Fett. I’ll cross the sky for you.”

  63. Kay L

I loved this book. I’ll leave one of my faves quote from this book

“You can be Han Solo,” he said, kissing her throat. “And I’ll be Boba Fett. I’ll cross the sky for you.”

  64. Delaney

Oh my thank you for a chance to read this book! it looks so gorgeous! Instead of romance line more like romance scene is when the guy runs after the girl and wants to tell her something. >////< Sorry, I'm weird like that.

  65. Claire Kim

David Green recommended it. That’s all I need to know. :)

“How do you spell love, Pooh?”
“You don’t spell it…you feel it.”
~Piglet and Pooh from the Winnie-the-Pooh series. It’s just adorable in its quotes, and always turn out to be quite accurate. ^^

  66. ParaJunkee

It takes a really good contemporary to get me interested and this sounds like it would do it and the way you described it has my interest.

  67. Karin Perry

“There is no pretending,” Jace said with absolute clarity. “I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I’ll love you then.”

    -Cassandra Clare (City of Glass)

  68. Karin Perry

“There is no pretending,” Jace said with absolute clarity. “I love you, and I will love you until I die, and if there is life after that, I’ll love you then.”

    -Cassandra Clare (City of Glass)

  69. Kristine

The friends who have read this have absolutely come undone over it, so I must see what it’s all about.

    • tonya

I haven’t seen one less than glowing review for it. It’s phenomenal. I hope you enjoy as much as the rest of us have. :)

  70. Lexi Edwards

“…I wouldn’t mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you.” Gus just gives me the feels <3
I can’t wait to read this one because it sounds like a fantastic contemporary and I’ve been in the mood for a good one lately :)

  71. Rachel Hoyt

There are so, so many to choose from, but one of my favorite romantic lines in the past few years is from Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier…

You are the blood in my veins, and the beating of my heart. You are my first waking thought, and my last sigh before sleeping. You are–you are bone of my bone, and breath of my breath.

    Swoon.

    Rachel @ Paper Cuts

  72. ahz1

Thanks for bringing this book to my attention – Mt. TBR just keeps growing and growing. Favorite romantic line? I love you.

  73. Chey

I hear nothing but amazing things about this book! It’s gotten to the point where it has quickly made its way to the top of my wishlist! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and holding the giveaway!

    • tonya

I was the same. After the 10th glowing review I read, I knew I had to pick it up immediately. So glad I did. Good luck with the giveaway!

  74. Kate @ Ex Libris

THIS BOOK. I have been telling everyone I know about this book. Lovely review!

There are so many lines. P&P has some excellent ones, of course, and I love that some people mentioned The Sea of Tranquility, too!

    • tonya

YES! I just said in another comment that this is the kind of book I’m going to go all YAvangelist on. Everyone needs to read it.

  75. ang

I’ve tried leaving this comment 3x, so apologies if you receive it as many.

    My favorite romantic line?

How about everything Jonah Griggs says, ever. Sigh.

  76. Bonnie R

I had to think on my favorite romantic line and come back. Now this isn’t my FAVORITE but it’s one of them.
“One day you will kiss a man you can’t breathe without, and find that breath is of little consequence.” – Bloodfever by Karen Marie Moning

    • tonya

WOW. That line is awesome. I haven’t gotten around to the KMM books yet, but I was under the impression that they weren’t very romantic, for some reason. But that line says otherwise. ;)

  77. Amber

I just picked this up from the library this morning! Can’t wait to start reading all the adorableness that is Eleanor & Park.

The cover to the book is adorable!

One of my favorite swoony quotes comes from
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
“I want you to play me like a cello”
    Gahhhhh, Adam.

  78. Giselle

This sounds SO good! I remember reading Christina’s review on it and being super intrigued bc it wasn’t a book I had noticed before. I love everything described here feeling unsettled is my fav emotion from contemps. I also love “I want to fold up every hard-fought, hard-won word between them and carry them around in my pocket for safekeeping.” <3

    Fab review, Wendy!

    • tonya

Thanks, Giselle! I hope you like it–“unsettled” is a great word to describe pretty much everything about E&P.

  79. Laurie Rosengren

Thanks for the post — I have been (impatiently!) waiting for my library hold. It’s gotten such wonderful buzz. I don’t have any romantic lines memorized, but two of my favorite YA “romances” are Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley and This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen.

    • tonya

I’ve not read either of those! I’ll have to put them on my list. :) I hope you get to read E&P soon. I’m gonna be a bit of a YAvangelist about this one, I can tell.

  80. Rebecca (RivkaBelle)

Oy. Forgive if a duplicate comment – I think Blogger ate it …

Favorite romantic line is hard, but let’s go with this one from Sarah Dessen’s THIS LULLABY for today:
I knew there were no guarantees. No way of knowing what came next for me, or him, or anybody. Some things don’t last forever, but some things do. Like a good song, or a good book, or a good memory you can take out and unfold in your darkest times, pressing down the corners and peering in close, hoping you still recognize the person you see there.

  81. Rebecca (RivkaBelle)

So excited about this book — loved her ATTACHMENTS, and looking forward to seeing how she handles YA …

… romantic line … oh geez. Um, how about this one, from Sarah Dessen’s THIS LULLABY:
I knew there were no guarantees. No way of knowing what came next for me, or him, or anybody. Some things don’t last forever, but some things do. Like a good song, or a good book, or a good memory you can take out and unfold in your darkest times, pressing down the corners and peering in close, hoping you still recognize the person you see there.

    • tonya

      I love that line!

I’m going to start Attachments this weekend, I think. I didn’t realize it wasn’t YA! Looking forward to reading an adult work from her.

  82. Kim (YA Asylum)

I’ve been dying to read this since I read John Green’s NYT review of it. It sounds so amazing and touching. It always amazes me when I find a book that’s been done before but not like this. Plus, the author’s name is Rainbow. How cool’s that? Great review and thanks for the giveaway!

  83. Asheley (@BookwormAsheley)

I wish I could talk about all of the things I love about this book but there just isn’t enough space here to do it. I think it resonated so much with me because of how personal Eleanor’s story was and how I have a little in common with her. Plus, Park is an amazing character.

Also, asking for a favorite romantic line is so hard! There are so many and some of my favorites are book spoilers. I can say with certainty that one of my favorites is from an Avett Brothers song called Colorshow – “I’m done forever. It’s you and me forever.” It’s a great line. It’s even better with the music. Great giveaway – thanks!

    • tonya

Love the Avett Brothers! That’s a great line. I love January Wedding and If It’s the Beaches as well. Well, who am I kidding–I swoon to pretty much their entire catalogue.

And I totally agree about E&P feeling personal. There were so many things I related to, and empathized with. Eleanor and Park were both so fully formed, it was impossible not to become completely invested in them, both as individuals and as a couple.

I’m so glad you loved as much as I did. <3

  84. Valia Lind

Love the review. I’ve heard so many awesome things about this book, I can’t wait to read it. One of my favorite lines is probably Darcy. “You have bewitched me, body and soul.” Wait, one more “My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

  85. LisaFicTalk

I actually don’t just have one favorite romantic line but I’ll give you 3 from one of my fave books; Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater –

“It is possible to be in love with you just because of who you are.”

    AND

“I said uselessly, “Sam, don’t go.”

Sam cupped my face in his hands and looked me in the eyes. His eyes were yellow, sad, wolf, mine.

“These stay the same. Remember that when you look at me. Remember it’s me. Please.”

    AND FINALLY –

“His lips tasted cool and sharp, peppermint, winter, but his hands, soft on the back of my neck, promised long days and summer and forever.”

Thanks for the awesome giveaway, Tonya! I’m looking forward to reading this! I’ve heard such great things about it. :D

    • tonya

STOPPPPPPPIT. You know what Sam Roth does to me. Oh god, now I need to reread. WHAT A HARDSHIP.

I hope you can read E&P soon! :)

  86. Jess@FueledbyFiction

“There’s no such thing as handsome princes, she told herself.
There’s no such thing as happily ever after….
You saved my life…..not forever, not for good. Probably just temporarily. But you saved my life and now I’m yours. The me that’s me right now is yours. Always.” Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

  87. elena

my favourite all time romantic line is “I love you so completely” from BSG. at least, that’s what I think of, ha.

  88. Danielle Nguyen

I was intrigued by this book from the beginning & then it started blowing up with all these recs from some of my favorite authors & I need it NOW. I’ll be picking it up at the bookstore this weekend, if all goes as planned.

    • tonya

Yay! I hope you get to pick it up this weekend. It’s a perfect Sunday afternoon read.

  89. Ivana -WTSL

Not an entry-just wanted to say how much I adore this book, even convinced my boyfriend to buy it because E&P are sooo us. And that scene where they hold hands? Freaking epic <3

    • tonya

Yay! I love that you can relate to E&P. I wish I’d had a boyfriend who read comics and made me mixtapes when I was in high school. Be still my heart. <3

  90. Mary @ BookSwarm

Oh, SWOON!! I’ve read a ton of fabulous reviews for this one but I didn’t realize it was *that* fabulous! Plus, John Green reviewed it!!! I think I’d pass out from happiness if he every reviewed anything of mine. *swoons again*

    • tonya

Right? How is Rainbow Rowell even still ALIVE after that kind of excitement. I’d still be shaking and hiding under the covers, haha.

I hope you pick it up soon! it’s so wonderful. <3

  91. Molli Moran

My ALL time favorite romantic quote? That’s so hard to choose, but I think I’d HAVE to go with, simply because I swoon EVERY time I think of it: “If my last words are not ‘I love you’- ye’ll ken it was because I didna have time,” from the OUTLANDER series by Diana Gabaldon.

What a touching review this is. Just from how beautifully you described Eleanor and Park, Tonya, I now want to read it MORE than ever. Seriously!

    • tonya

OH MY GOD YES. James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Frasier. SUH-WOON. And, “don’t be afraid. There’s the two of us now.” And about a hundred thousand others from him because he is the best.

Man. Now I’m all flibbety gibbety about Jamie. I’ll probably have to reread, haha.

I hope you can pick up E&P soon! While not *quite* the epic romance of Outlander, I think you will enjoy it. :)

  92. Lauren @ Love is not a triangle

I didn’t even really read this review closely, because I have the book on hand and I usually stop looking at reviews right before I start a book. That said, I saw the rating and skimmed through how much you loved this, and it gave me butterflies and made me giddy, and I cannot wait to experience this story for myself!

    • tonya

I love that you skimmed! I want you to experience everything firsthand. GAH. I kind of just want to sit in the corner of your room and watch you while you read. Is that creepy? (Yes. Sorry.)

  93. Adriane

I keep looking at this one and just keep thinking about it but haven’t gotten it yet. Just need to do it I guess! :)

But my favorite romatic line that I go back to time and again is from Dirty Dancing (sad I know!) ‘Nobody puts Baby in a corner’ Man I loved Patrick Swayze!!!!!

    • tonya

No way is Dirty Dancing sad! That is just iconic. It’s like the original swoon for our (my) generation, haha. Oh, Johnny. <3

  94. April (BooksandWine)

Freakin’ yes to ALL OF THIS. YES. I also agree about the John Green review and how perfect and eloquent it is and feeling inadequate by comparison.

    Sigh.

    Love this review though!

    • tonya

Well, really… how can anyone NOT feel inadequate next to John Green? It’s just science.

I’m so glad you loved E&P as much as I did!

  95. Amy

Awesome review!! I really need to read this book. It sound so real and amazing. I can’t even think of my favorite romantic line because there are so many great ones. I am reading Clockwork Princess right now and could take at least 4 from just that book already!

    • tonya

I hope you do! And isn’t the cover cute? I’d probably have gotten it for the cover alone if I hadn’t already seen a dozen rave reviews.

  96. Keertana

See, that’s the thing! I keep thinking I’ve read this story so many times before, so why bother picking it up? BUT, after seeing such a high rating and positive review from you (and John Green!), I know I’ll have to get around to it. Fantastic review, as always, Tonya! :D

    • tonya

Thanks, Keertana! This may be the best contemporary YA romance I’ve ever read. It captures that raw nerve feeling of first love so well–painful and exhilarating at the same time.

  97. Aryn Bounds

This sounds like such a wonderful romance, a real YA romance, rather than just a written one. I honestly don’t even know what my favorite romantic line is.

    • tonya

It really is. It gave me so many flashbacks to my first crush in high school. So painful and exciting. SIGH.

  98. Nikki H

There’s so many romantic line that I love! One of my favorites is “Always” in the Harry Potter series from Prof. Snape. I’m so excited for this because it just seems like the perfect romance.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

    • tonya

IMMEDIATE LIP QUIVERS. I get choked up during that scene every. single. time.

E&P *is* the perfect (realistic young) romance. I’ll say that much. ;)

  99. Alison Can Read

Gosh, my all time favorite romantic line? I don’t know. I love the ending of TFIOS which is sort of a romantic set of lines – from the letter to Hazel’s comment at the end.

  100. Brandy

My favorite romantic line is from Megan Whalen Turner’s The King of Attolia:

“I love your eyes. I love your ears, and I love every single one of your ridiculous lies.”

  101. Book Chelle

I still haven’t read this yet. I’m afraid for all the feelings that I’ll have.

    Great review and awesome giveaway!

    • tonya

You get a pass because Mr. Ollivander has been keeping you busy. BUT YOU NEED TO READ SOOOON. <3

  102. Crystal F

There are so many romantic lines to choose from, but the one that I adore recently is from The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay… “I wished my mother was here tonight, which is stupid, because its an impossible wish”… “Its not stupid to want to see her again.”… “It wasn’t so much that I wanted to see her again, I wanted her to see you” *melting*

After reading some amazing reviews of Eleanor & Park I listened to book on audio and loved it! Id love to have a copy of the book to hold in my hands!

  103. Ali Ginger-Read

I loved this book! Really, who couldn’t? That hand holding scene melted me into a big pile of sticky sweet goo. It is a story told before but never with this style and humor.

    • tonya

The style was so great. I don’t usually like the shifting POVs, especially when they go back and forth so quickly, but it worked so well in E&P and really added to the overall feel.

I’m so glad you loved as much as I did!

  104. Stephanie Sinclair

I think one of my all time favorite romantic lines was from The Iron Fey series when Ash pledge fealty to Meagan. *swoon* We he said, “From this day forward… I am yours”, I SWOONED! LOL. And then the ending to the The Iron Queen. UGH. Just take my heart already!

Anyway, I have been seeing this book around and I am dying to read it. I’d love to win a copy. Especially after you said it has one of the most romantic lines ever! I need it! Thanks for the chance to win!

    • tonya

I should probably qualify that it’s the most romantic line ever (for really nerdy girls like myself), heh. But. I stand by my statement, either way. ;)

I’ve had the Iron Fey series on my radar forever. I need to pick them up!

  105. Crystal F

Favorite romantic line… there are so many. But the one that stands out from a recent read is “I wished my mother was here tonight, which is stupid, because its an impossible wish”… “it wasn’t so much that I wanted to see her again, I wanted her to see you” (from The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay)

I listened to the audio of Eleanor & Park after reading some amazing reviews and I’d love to have a copy because it really is an amazing story (and I think the audio cut out a part of the story =/)

    • tonya

Oooh, I’ve had that one on my list for awhile now. That line sounds lovely. <3

E&P does end rather abruptly / open-ended, if that was the issue with the audio. I hope you didn’t get a bad copy!

  106. starryeyedjen

I think everyone but me has already read this book. I want to feel unsettled. I want to read the most romantic line ever. :) I actually kept passing on this one because it sounded like so many other novels, but it just keeps popping up on my radar. This beautiful review has ensured that I will give it a chance. :D

    • tonya

Honestly (and I’m not really one for hype), this is one of the best contemporary YAs I’ve read. If not THE best. It just felt so real to me. I can’t say enough about it. I hope you pick it up soon! :)

    • Wendy Darling

Oh no. I haven’t read it yet either, Jen! But after this review, I definitely will Tonya knows all the right words to say to convince me. :)

  107. Vivien

My all time favorite line (that I can remember)
“You love me. Real or not real?” I tell him, “Real.” from Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. I adore it. I’ve heard such wonderful things about Eleanor & Park. SO many, that I had to put this on my wishlist. It sounds utterly adorable.

    • tonya

Ugggghhhh, THAT LINE. Killed me. So, so perfect.

I hope you read E&P soon. It is adorable, but also a little sad and painful. It takes you right back to the first time you fell in love. <3
