Synopsis:

It’s a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

The first in a sweeping science fiction trilogy, These Broken Stars is a timeless love story about hope and survival in the face of unthinkable odds.

Early praise for These Broken Stars!

“Absolutely brilliant. This is the sci fi I’ve been waiting for! Action, romance, twists and turns–this book has it all!” – New York Times bestselling author of Across The Universe, Beth Revis

What’s In A Name? The Authors Share the Story Behind the Title

One of the questions authors get asked a lot at signings and panels is “How did you come up with your title?” For some the answer’s simple enough, but for others it involves a bit of a story.

The original working title for THESE BROKEN STARS was actually “WRECKED.” This is the name we gave it when we first started thinking of it as a book, and not just a collection of scenes between two fun characters. Since the story is a shipwreck-in-space story, it made perfect sense to us! It’s the name it sold under, too–but we knew it was likely to change.

There were a lot of reasons for changing the title, but the biggest one was that our editor didn’t think it expressed enough of what the book was about. So she asked us to draw up a list of alternate titles. We sent back a few lists of titles, but none of them were quite right.

This time we asked for a little guidance, of the “what’re we doing wrong” variety. We got some very detailed instructions back. We needed a title that shouted “science fiction,” but also shouted “romance,” and also felt fresh and young, still very much a YA title. Oh, and it couldn’t be more than two or three words long.

Right. Simple. Okay.

So we went back and drew up lists of every space word we can think of. We asked friends for help. Amie’s husband suggested the fabulous title of “MASSIVE CRASH,” which, as he pointed out, would pave the way for a great sequel: “MASSIVE CRUSH.” We started pairing random space words with random romantic words, which spat out such evocative titles as “LOVE NEBULA” and “KISSING IN SPACE.” We were clearly not getting anywhere.

Then, publisher to the rescue! To this day, we don’t know what brilliant person at Disney-Hyperion came up with it, but out of the blue our agents called us to propose a new title idea: THESE BROKEN STARS. It was instant love all across the board. Our editor loved it, marketing loved it, our agents loved it, and (possibly least important of all on this list) we loved it too.

And that’s how our book got its name. And a good thing, too–we were about ten minutes away from titling it MASSIVE CRASH and calling it a day.

I love books when the characters are from different backgrounds. So cliche, but so good when done right! Can’t wait to read this book!

  2. heartflow

  3. Claire Kim

I look at the cover and OMGCOVERLUST! XD And the reviews sound pretty encouraging, so I’d like to give it a try!

  4. Jessie

I haven’t read books by either of these authors – though I want to and own Skylark! – but they seem to work well together.

And I love the cover. And that it seems sc-fi-ish. In SPAAAAACCCE! I hope it lives up to my now-high expectations.

  5. theinkspills

I adore the cover! This is definitely one of my most anticipated of the year – a romance/survivalist/science fiction story? I’m there! Plus I’m excited about a YA series that has a different set of main characters in each book.

  7. bebecald

First off this is such a pretty cover! I am ashamed to admit I do sometimes judge a book by its cover-and this cover draws me in. As of late I’ve been getting more into sci-fi than just paranormal and this just sounds epic.

  8. Lisa B.

I’m a sucker for Sci-Fi, but I’m really picky when it comes to my YA books. This one sounds so unique I can’t help be be drawn to it.

  9. Kat C

I’ve never read a space book, so this is what appeals to me. Plus, I met Megan Spooner and she seemed so passionate about this novel and her work with Amie.

  10. Lily B

Sci-fi, love it <3 have not read a good one in months <3 and the premise of the book sounds fantastic!

    • Anne

Me neither! I need to read something techy soon since I seem to be suffering from Science-withdrawal.

  11. HayleyAG

I’m a huge fan of Spooner’s Skylark series, so she can’t do no wrong with this upcoming release! :)

  12. Holly Bryan

Sci-fi has long been one of my 2 favorite genres (the other being historical fiction), and while for year’s i mainly read adult sci-fi, in the past year and change I’ve been reading mostly YA…so this sounds just perfect for me!! I am definitely eagerly anticipating this release!

  13. N. Hughes

So excited for this book! I ADORED Skylark, and have been looking forward to THESE BROKEN STARS for ages. Thanks for the arc giveaway, too–fingers crossed!

  14. Heather Roddenberry

That was a fun post on how they came up with the title:) I do like the cover even though it leaves me with so many questions! And is it me or does anyone else think of Spiderman? The older one w/ Toby Maguire. That girl is a dead ringer for Mary Jane Watson:)

  15. anothernovelread

Ahhh, this book sounds amazing! I’m such a sucker for books set in space (I had an obsession with Star Trek for a while). PLUS, it’s by one of my favorite authors: Meagan Spooner! I’m excited and curious to read her collaboration with Amie.

  16. Paige

The sky against her dress is so perfect. I’m totally judging the book by the cover and know it’s going to be great!

  17. KikiD

Well, the MAIN reason why I want to read this is because I love the setting: space, who wouldn’t be curious? Also, it is dystopian, which is a genre I can’t resist! Thanks for the giveaway!

  18. Sarah

I want to win this because I love dystopians, the cover is gorgeous, and I’m amused by the name Lilac LaRoux :)

  19. Rubita

Kissing in Space probably would have gotten you a few autobuys. And, yes, of course I’m looking forward to this book! I read Skylark and really enjoyed it, so These Broken Stars went directly on my to-read list.

  20. Rachel

The cover is stunning, and hello, it’s set in space! And there’s romance? YES, PLEASE!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  21. Michelle Morris

Thank you for the giveaway! I can’t wait to get my hands on this book. The cover is breathtaking and the history of its title made me laugh.

  22. Kris-10

I want to read this book because the cover’s gorgeous, the synopsis sounds great, and it’s sci-fi! :))

  23. Jill

Yes more YA sci-fi!!! That’s really the main reason I want to read it. Huge fan of sci-fi and it seems like it’s the “next big thing” in YA.

  25. b helm

This is a book that made its way onto my tbr list without a cover or even much copy regarding what it’s about. It’s just one that grabbed me immediately.

I would love to win a copy!

  26. Jasprit

The cover to the Broken Stars is absolutely stunning and I think the title matches up with the gorgeous cover perfectly! Thanks for sharing this cover with us Wendy, I think this will be one book for sure that I will be highly anticipating! :)

  27. Lyn Kaye

I am a horrible person, because I want the book for the cover. Just LOOK at it. I mean, if nothing else, I can drool over the front design. I’m going to hell because of my poor choices.

  28. greenduckiesgirl

Love Nebula?! HA! That made me laugh so hard. I’m intrigued by this book. I like space stuff, especially if it’s fun and angsty. For some reason, this reminds me of one of my favorite episodes of Quantum Leap, where Sam gets stranded with the rich girl who accidentally blew up the cruise ship because she thought he was cute. That made much more sense in my head but I think you get my idea.

  29. Vegan YA Nerds

I am pretty wearing of girls in big dresses on covers, especially when it makes NO sense at all (like in space!!) But I have to admit that that is pretty!

  30. alicia marie

I really like the cover and I’m always looking for more YA Sci-Fi to read so this one is definitely going on my tbr list : )

  31. Barbara E.

I want to read it because I love science fiction, especially survivor stories and the premise of These Broken Stars sounds fantastic.

  32. Erika

Love the idea of it being a timeless love story! Love the beautiful cover. Thanks for the reveal and chance to win!

  33. Mandroid

That cover is gorgeous. I’m normally not into romance stories, but this one is in SPACE! The scifi elements definitely make this an appealing read and I always prefer hate-you-love-you relationships to insta-love.

  35. Annabelle Marie Veronica

I remember hearing about this book a long time ago and thinking about how interesting it sounded! Books in space are always awesome, and I’m so excited that it has such a gorgeous cover.

  36. Angie

I’m kind of depressed to admit that the main reason why I want to read this is because its cover is soooooooo pretty…

  37. Anna Hutchinson

I just noticed—and like—that the characters’ pose evokes “The Creation of Adam” from the Sistine Chapel. Classic art, now with ball gowns!

  39. Maji Bookshelf

The cover, i have to admit, is beautiful. And I love stories where the main protagonist and the love interest are thrown together and have to survive (kinda like under the never sky!) those are my type of books! close proximity ;)

    thanks for the giveaway!

  40. Unknown

I love Sci-Fi, and I love “stranded on a deserted island” storylines… Put them together and I’m pretty sure we have a winner: Stranded on a deserted planet! yes please!

  41. Mariya

I haven’t read too much YA sci-fi but this book looks very promising. The premise of it is good. And then there’s the cover. Wow! It’s frickin gorgeous! I am loving this new trend of stars being on the bookcover (on books such as this one, Vanishing Act, Age of Miracles, the Dog Stars, just to name a few)

  42. Melissa

These Broken Stars is an eye-catching title. Lovely cover too. This sounds like it could be right up my alley (hopefully!).

  43. Melissa

These Broken Stars is an eye-catching title — so interesting to hear how it came about. Lovely cover too. This could be right up my alley (hopefully!).

  44. vitajayne

I love books like this, where the two MCs come from complete opposite sides of society and find a way to work together (and then hopefully fall in love).

For how much I don’t like struggles keeping MCs apart, it makes for a much better story and meaningful relationship.

  45. Jennifer Messerschmidt

Gorgeous cover! So romantic and pretty with the dress and starry background. I love books about space, spaceships, and new planets so I’m super excited about this one. Thanks for sharing!

  46. Sallie Mazzur

What is NOT to look forward to getting this book? I love Megan Spooner, and I love the cover and I love how fantastic both authors are with spiffy personalities and have I mentioned how gorgeous that cover is and how amazing it will look on my bookshelf? Brb, daydreaming.

    Thanks for the giveaway :)

  47. Cass (Words on Paper)

This girl better actually be wearing an emerald silky billowing dress in the story, otherwise I’m calling BS. It actually reminds me of Amy (red hair)…and I suppose Elder, from the Across the Universe trilogy. I’m not sure I like the background or the typography. Something about it all… doesn’t congeal to me. Like all these elements don’t work entirely well together. The colour palette, for one. I dunno. I’m not a fan. My opinion. I’m in the minority (duh). I have absolutely no idea why I’m not jumping up and down with this book. I should be, considering I love AtU to death and have been wanting to try more sci-fi type books. I’m just wary…

I haven’t seen any reviews just yet so I’ll check back later, see if the pb or UK have different covers in future.

  49. Miss Anderson

I’ve been waiting for this cover for months. It’s on my “most anticipated 2013 reads” list, so I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I love space books!

  50. Lexie

Honestly the first thing I saw was her dress and I thought she was flying around on a hot air balloon…

  51. Julianna Helms

This book just sounds so great, first because it’s sci-fi (and sci-fi isn’t that easy to come by in YA) and also because Beth blurbed it. AND because the premise is just fabulous! :) Thanks for the giveaway!

  52. Candace

I love the cover and the description! The title is absolutely perfect, it really got my attention! I’m VERY excited for this one!

  53. Angela Chen

Before the cover came out, I wanted to read it because of the blurb and the title, too. You can’t help but be interested with a title like that. It sounded absolutely amazing! And now with the cover, I definitely want to read it! I can’t wait. :D

  54. ceencee

The synopsis was the first thing that convinced me that I need to get my hands on this as soon as possible. I’m a sucker for anything sci-fi! And now that I’ve seen the cover it only makes me want to read it more!

  55. ceencee

The synopsis was the first thing that convinced me I should get my hands on this as soon as possible. I’m a sucker for anything sci-fi! But after seeing the cover I want it even more!

  56. Alicia

Honestly, everything about this book sounds good! I can’t wait to see Lilac and Tarver fall in love and try to survive in a new planet. I can’t wait to read it!

  57. Monica Fumarolo

I’m exceptionally excited for this book because I’ve only recently come to like sci-fi and this sounds epic! I love how the genre is breaking away from some of its traditions and is willing to try new things (still have spaceships, but also about exploration, love, and hope). So pumped!

  58. Katrina L. Lantz

As if shipwrecked on a deserted planet in a gorgeous dress weren’t enough, there’s a reluctant love interest along for the ride! And then the synopsis hints at something creeptastic to come, and I just have to know what that is.

  59. Sarah Johnson

I’m not the biggest fan of science fiction, but when I do find the few that sound appealing I just have to have them. This is one of those few occurrences. The cover also being gorgeous doesn’t hurt.

  60. Angelica R. Jackson

I’m curious to see how the shipwreck from a spaceliner plays out. How would it be different/worse than the “desert island” scenario, especially when the characters have such different backgrounds?

  61. Emma

I am always eager to read more YA sci-fi, and this cover is breathtaking! I can’t wait to read it! :D

  62. Rebecca (RivkaBelle)

The title hooked me from the beginning. And then the synopsis. And now that cover has sealed my fate … Pretty sure I’m *in love* with this book, and I haven’t even officially met it yet!

  63. Keertana

LOL! I love the story into picking the title for this one, especially as it’s so beautiful. Even the cover is gorgeous, so I’m really hoping the novel itself winds up being spectacular. *fingers crossed* Thanks for sharing, ladies! :D

  64. Jennifer @ YA Sisterhood

I have never read a book on another planet, and it sounds intriguing! It’s like Star Trek in a book. Don’t make fun….I liked the new Star Trek (with Chris Pine…oh la la)!

    Jennifer

  65. Livvy

This one sounds amazing. I hadn’t heard of until you spotlighted it on your blog, but romance and science-fiction is definitely what I adore.

I have to say I love the name and it sounds so much better than where they’d go to with Massive Crush. Sounds like they’ve got some brilliant publishers.

    Thanks for spotlighting! :-)

  66. Ashley Rogers

The cover is amazing; there is mystery, romance, and tragedy; and this is all set in space. I think this will be an amazing story! Thank you so much for this giveaway!

  67. Pearl K

Gorgeous cover plus intriguing storyline makes this sci-fi YA super appealing. It’s gonna be a trilogy too so I’ll have more of the story to enjoy. Really curious about the unforeseen adventures that will change them. Thanks.

  68. Christine

I love books like this. Mystery, science fiction, figuring out the answers to life’s questions, love, everything about this book sounds right up my alley! The cover is gorgeous and makes me want to read it even more!

  69. Cecelia

What’s appealing?! Everything! But seriously, I love most of the YA sci-fi I’ve read, and it’s a goal of mine in 2013 to really dive into more of the recent stuff. And I’ve always liked space-based sci-fi more than dystopian/our planet stuff. So a space shipwreck with romance sounds like pretty much the best thing ever. Ah, can’t wait!

  70. Beth

I think a journey through “eerie, deserted terrain” sounds like fun! :)

Thanks for the reveal–the cover is lovely!

    Beth
    bharbin07[at]gmail[dot]com

  71. Sam

Hehe. These Broken Stars sounds a lot better than Massive Crash. ;) Thanks for sharing the cover! It’s stunning. I can’t seem to resist books with starry skies on the front. :)

  72. dreamsofawalrus

Ooh. OOH! I’ve never read YA sci-fi before! Dystopian books yes, but they’re different. No SPACESHIPS!

Though I guess this won’t have many spaceships in it either what with it being about crash landing and all… but still, I love a character who’s stared into the abyss a bit. Always makes me feel like I’m getting some insight into future humans (which is silly).

My favorite (non-YA) sci-fi is by Lois McMaster Bujold, who writes space opera and really understands people. Oh and the Sirantha Jax books, which include the best non-human-but-humanoid character I’ve ever come across (and lots of action and romance and even platonic love that makes me go weak at the knees).

Why haven’t I noticed this lack in my YA reading? Are there other’s YA sci-fi books?

  73. MrsAC

Before the cover, I was excited about a space-y, sci-fi YA book with hopefully some swoony romance. Now that I’ve seen the cover I’m even more excited!

  74. Alexa D.

I have wanted to read this book since the deal was announced in Publisher’s Weekly. It’s the Blue Lagoon… in space! That Beth Revis blurbed it just makes me even more excited for it.

  75. The Night Bookmobile

I haven’t been entering a lot of giveaways lately but this book sounds really good. I’m really into sci fi and combining that with a ship sounds really interesting. Plus the cover is pretty and I’m superficial!

  76. Tiffany H

Oh, I’m back to answer the question. I hadn’t clicked on the “I commented” thing to see you had a question for me to answer! >.< I love Science Fiction and SF Romance. Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga got me hooked!

  77. Go Flash Go

Interesting discussion regarding the title. I can only imagine the thought that goes into picking a title that conveys the right impressions for the book…and that has not been used before.

I think they made a great choice.

    Stephanie

  78. Tammy Sparks

I’m ready for another epic YA SF! This definitely sounds epic. Can’t wait, and the cover is beautiful! Thanks for the giveaway:)

  79. Christina (Christinareadsya)

The cover kind of reminds me of TEMPEST’s cover. Except more gendered now that the girl is wearing a giant floofy dress… and a bit less epic also because of the background–TEMPEST’s cover has a much more dramatic flair to it? I think what strikes me most is that I wouldn’t expect it to be a science fiction novel…

Either way! I am excited to read it because it’s a sci fi romance. The premise sounds epic. I haven’t read something from either author, so I’m looking forward to it!

  80. Jasmine Stairs

Because I love Science Fiction! And teen war heros, and people who don’t like each other forced to work together, and shipwrecks– basically the only way I’d like it more if there was a scene where they had to pretend to make out to distract people, and then discovered they liked it.

  81. lalaith7

I’m actually more excited now that I’ve been reminded this is a Disney Hyperion. For whatever reason that imprint has yet to let me down (and now that I know they’re responsible for the wonderful title I want to give them a gold star or something!) Plus I am super intrigued by the idea of Amie and Meg writing this together.

  82. readingdate

The cover is so gorgeous! I do like the YA sci-fi I’ve read and am excited to see the trend take off. Plus, I’m really glad they changed the title name from Wrecked. The current title fits the description much better and reminds me of star-crossed love.
    Looking forward to this one!

  83. Alexandra Ray

I’m drawn to any YA sci-f-/fantasy romance, and I get even more excited when said story is written by an author[s] I trust! I read Skylark and loved it. These Broken Stars has been on my tbr list for MONTHS (pretty much since the day I opened my goodreads account). I CANNOT WAIT!

  84. Me

What a beautiful cover! I am looking forward to this book. I just recently read Across the Universe Trilogy and enjoyed the genre.

  85. Me

That is one pretty cover. I’m looking forward to reading this. Just read the Across the Universe trilogy and was my first Sci-Fi experience so I think I’ll really enjoy this one!

  86. Me

That is one pretty cover. I’m looking forward to reading this. Just read the Across the Universe trilogy and was my first Sci-Fi experience so I think I’ll really enjoy this one!

  87. starryeyedjen

I love the idea of these two characters being the only survivors of a space crash. And they come from two totally different worlds, so I can’t wait to see how they come together. And I LOVE the title and the cover! :)

  88. Sana

Ahh, thank God for not naming it Massive Crash, that would have been disastrous. =D

But on a serious note, I’ve been looking forward to the cover for such a long time and being a lover of sci-fi, I had very high hopes because either the covers look bad ass or just plain bad. However, the cover of These Broken Stars is so good and that dress and those colors! I think I’m going a little cover crazy here.

Sana @ artsy musings of a bibliophile

  89. Lark @ The Bookwyrm's Hoard

The story behind the title made me laugh. Kissing in Space?! Massive Crash/Crush?! Thank you for brightening my morning. (And BTW, These Broken Stars is definitely a more enticing title. I’ve already added the book to my ever-growing TBR list.)

  90. Sara @ Forever 17 Books

So this book totally slipped me by! I have not heard of it before but wow, it sounds amazing! I like survival stories and this is a fun twist. The stars on the cover are just so pretty too. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention!

  91. Jenni @ Alluring Reads

Ooh! I really like the cover, I had been eyeing this one every week as I pick my WoW and was wondering when the cover would finally be official. The pose kind of reminds me of Tempest but I think this cover has just enough uniqueness to make it stand out and be easily tellable from that one. Thanks for sharing!

  92. Kayla Beck

Man, I so cannot wait for this book! Skylark was one of my favorites for 2012 (oh the feels!), and These Broken Stars has been on my TBR so long that it’s PAINFUL! *makes grabby hands* I think I may have to grovel to Disney soon.

Also, I completely approve of the cover, which is a rarity in itself. :-)

    • lalaith7

I like to imagine he’s hanging off a piece of the ship. This is probably totally wrong and involves lots of ignoring the vacuum of space but makes my brain happy.

    • lalaith7

(thought I posted this already, sorry if it’s a duplicate!)

I like to imagine he’s hanging off a piece of the ship. Of course this ignores the realities of the vacuum of space but it makes my brain happy so we’re good.
