Hooray--my status with Richelle Mead goes from "it's complicated" back to "in a relationship" again! *throws confetti* This review is spoiler-free even if you haven't read any of the other books Bloodlines or VA books.

Vampire Academy is one of my favorite YA series and I'm usually a big fan of this author's, but I've had middling reactions to her books across all genres since Spirit Bound and Iron-Crowned. I am happy to report that the magic is back again for this latest installment of the Bloodlines series, which follows the problems that Alchemist Sydney Sage encounters as she tries to protect Jill, the spare to the vampire throne.

The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead picks up a few weeks after the events of The Golden Lily, and Sydney is learning to how to cast spells with Ms. Terwilliger. Eventually she goes in search of the mysterious Marcus Finch, an ex-alchemist who apparently betrayed them, but who may hold the key to secrets that Sydney is trying to uncover about the only way of life she's ever known.

Things I thoroughly enjoyed:

-- The overarching story about the Alchemists' magical tattoos. The idea that a special indigo ink might stop a particular aspect of the tattoo's power is really interesting and well-done.

-- The physicality of Sydney using magic. I always loved that part of Mead's Dark Swan series, and there are shades of that descriptive writing here in the hum of energy and use of incantations.

-- The southern California settings which I obviously have a soft spot for. (Plus I think the bunny-themed bed and breakfast might've been inspired by this crazy Bunny Museum in Pasadena!)

-- There is NO love triangle...yet.

-- The mystery behind Ms. Terwilliger's missing sister Veronica is pretty intriguing--she's not the first evil woman rumored to steal the youth and beauty from young girls, but that idea is always fun to me.

-- We don't see a lot of Jill, thank goodness! She drives me bananas.

-- Adrian seems like Adrian again. After being such a mopefest in the last two books, he's back to being so witty and charming that your pants may have disappeared before you've even noticed.

-- Sydney doesn't irritate me as much in this book. There are also some reasons suggested for why she might be so very obedient.

-- There is finally--finally!--some Sydrian chemistry. I never bought the attraction between them, and I'm still not 100% into this relationship, but there are a few scenes that definitely show a spark between them. Although I'm still not sure she really gets how awesome he is.

-- There is pie. Lots and lots of pie.

Quibbles?

I don't really have any, other than that Sydney's still not my favorite heroine. I like her much more than I thought possible, but I just think Richelle Mead is better at writing kickass heroines. I felt this way about Seth in her Succubus series, too--both he and Syd come off as more wimpy and tiresome to me rather than reserved and brainy.

But Sydney's finally starting to become interesting, or the story is becoming better suited to the things she might actually be good at, with less time spent on all the things that showcase her annoying traits. The plot in this book is much more engaging than in the previous two, and it's a relief that the author isn't relying as much on Rose and Dimitri appearances to transition things through.

So in closing--if you enjoyed Bloodlines from the very beginning, you're going to go nuts over this book! But if you've had mixed reactions to the series thus far, you may just find that this one is better suited to your taste. I'm grateful that a copy of The Indigo Spell landed on my doorstep unexpectedly, because I really enjoyed it--and I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment.

But really...Adrian can touch my aura anytime.

This review also appears on GoodReads. An advance copy was provided by the publisher.

  1. Wonderful, wonderful review! And from someone who knows that this spin-off series has been a rather flawed one...

I agree, 100% on the Sydney/Seth comparison. Mead does excel at writing kick-butt females, and I feel like Sydney often goes to a place that is to the extreme anal-retentive/dullard which just further highlights what readers miss without Rose. She's not a great protagonist, to be sure. But she does improve in this book (and I still approve the running Sydney Melbourne gag - for the Aussies!). And Adrian is still ... *sigh*. His conversation on the plane was good ol' Adrian.

I'm half-way through this book, and after having the two-star disaster of 'The Golden Lily', I'm happier with this 3rd book. The Terwilliger sister storyline is great.

But something that still bugs me in this series is how underdeveloped and downright annoying Jill is. She was a vapid wannabe model in the fist 2 books, and she's not improving in this 3rd one. What I really want (and, I dunnno, maybe it happens later on in 'Indigo') is for Jill and Lissa to be in each other's company and for someone to address the elephant in the room - that Eric Dragomir had an affair, resulting in Jill, effectively wrecking Lissa's rose-tinted memories of her happy family life.

So, yes. This series is improving. But I am happier to know that Mead is returning to the adult world with 'Gameboard of the Gods' (terrible title aside) because I do miss her 'Georgina Kincaid' and 'Dark Swan' days. I look forward to actually putting her YA series aside for a bit to delve into (hopefully) darker realms and messier relationships.

Sorry for the ramble. I just really liked this review :)

    1. Danielle, you come and ramble here ANYTIME. I love your thoughtful comment...partly because I agree with all of it, hah!

I'm so glad you see the Syd/Seth similarities. Aside from one memorable up-against-the-wall scene ( o.O ) I thought he was just as dull as Sydney for the most part. But yes, how awesome that she is more appealing in this book! It's about time. I hadn't given up hope on RM, but I was definitely getting antsy.

I still really dislike Jill. I went on a little rant about her on my Bloodlines review awhile back, actually--agree with the "vapid" and wannabe observations. What you point out about Eric Dragomir is right, too--but so little time is spent on Lissa and Jill, that probably won't happen. And frankly, I'm okay with it, since Lissa's POVs in VA and anything having to do with Jill are my least favorite parts of both series.

I'm thrilled to see another adult series from Richelle, too. I don't like that she so often defaults to cheating as a driving plot device, but I feel like that's where she really lets loose.

Love to you, Danielle! Thanks for the discussion.

  2. I am happy to hear that Sydney perks up a bit in this one. I didn't take to her in VA and neither of the two previous books have changed my opinion of her. It seems so strange to me that Adrian and Sydney would find each other appealing. I have heard that opposites attract but their attraction to each other feels forced. Something that might happen if one has slim pickings.

I just finished the Iron Crown series and it felt flat compared to Georgina's story and VA. I have high hopes for the new series, though!

    1. I can totally see why any girl would be attracted to Adrian, hah, but yes--I still have difficulty understanding why anyone's attracted to Sydney. Everyone keeps saying how hot she is, especially in this book, but her personality has been so meh until this point, I haven't really believed it.

It's so interesting how people respond to Dark Swan vs. Succubus, too--I am one of the few who actually likes Eugenie's story better than George's, partly because I like Dorian and because I hate the whole "I'm a succubus so I have to cheat on you" thing.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, the cheating aspect of Georgie's story really bothered me. I loved Dorian and really hope that there is another book in the series, because I feel like it started to pick up in the last 2 books. Kiyo drove me insane, though. If there is another book, I hope we get to see more of the different lands. I thought that was the most interesting part of the series, in addition to Dorian/Eugenie. I had a harder time connecting with Eugenie than with Georgie. I read VA and Succubus before Eugenie, so maybe Rose's and Georgina's personalities set the bar pretty high.

  3. I'm so excited to get a copy of this book. i love VA and I actually enjoyed the first book in this spin off. I believe this series have a natural progression for Adrian and Sydney's "relationship/love" and I prefer it that way compared to an instant attraction. Love Richelle Mead!

  4. No, I haven't started this series yet. Bad blogger! No cookie! But, as I adore Richelle Meade and her writing, I know it won't be long before I'm gorging on this series. Sydney sounds a little...meh...but if the rest of it keeps me moving forward, I'm totally in!

"if you enjoyed Bloodlines from the very beginning, you're going to go nuts over this book!"

I actually really like Sydney and liked the other books (not as much as VA or Frostbite though), so maybe it's time for me to do the banana dance!

~~Can't wait for this one. Glad you are now on better terms with RM. And yay for SoCal mentions ;). Maybe I will recognize some of the places too...

    1. Hah hah, I will push you out of the way, Christina! Not that I didn't love Dimitri too, but it's hard not to have a soft spot (or two) for Adrian.

I'm sure you'll love this book then, Christina. And YES, so awesome to have people writing about SoCal who clearly have spent some time here. I really liked the weird windmill date Sydney and Adrian went on in Golden Lily, hah. I still might do that sometime.

  8. "Adrian can touch my aura anytime." Bahahahahaha...same here! :D I'm glad the magic is back for you, and I'm glad Adrian is back to his usual self...I kind of hoped that's how it would go after that ending in The Golden Lily. He seemed up to his old tricks again, anyway. :P I really thought she was going to work the love triangle angle in this one, but I'm so happy to hear it's not there, at least not yet. And yay for chemistry!!!! And PIE!! :D So, there are the Alchemists' tattoos, but what about Adrian's? Does he ever get HIS awesome tattoo? :P Love this review, Wendy...can't wait to get my copy!

    1. Yeah, it did feel like he was more of himself towards the end of GL, although I'd forgotten how far things went between him and Sydney! So in this book I was all....REALLY? at the beginning.

It is definitely a relief not to have a love triangle. After all the WHO IS MARCUS FINCH promo, I thought that was a sure thing. Turns out, he's a pretty interesting character, but still a side one--not really worth being the focus of a marketing campaign like that, IMO. At least as he is now.

Anyway, I can't wait for you to read this, Jen! So fun.

    1. My favorite series of hers is Vampire Academy--ignore the cheesy titles and covers, it's fantastic! Sometimes people dislike Rose, because she's rebellious and strong, but you really see her evolve over the six books. Great action scenes, hot boys, and themes about honor and sacrifice underneath all the surface snark. The later books are very dark, and I didn't like the last one much at all. But overall, one of the best urban fantasy series out there, IMO. I hope you enjoy if you give them a try!

  12. I'm reviewing Indigo Spell on Monday. It was .... how do I say this without spoilers? I guess I'll just say that, based on the plot trajectory of VA, I was expecting a different kind of story. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've always loved Syd and in this book I loved her even more.
Fondue? Monopoly? The B and B? The t-shirts?

    1. Ooo, I look forward to your review, Jen. I think part of my disappointment with this series is because it's such a departure from ALL of Richelle Mead's other series--but regardless, I think I know the specific plot trajectory you mean.

Yeah, it was fun to see them do weirdly normal things, hah. And the tee-shirt scene...whooee!

  13. "After being such a mopefest in the last two books, he's back to being so witty and charming that your pants may have disappeared before you've even noticed."

Oh God. Now I have to read everything leading up to this book because I need to meet the splendor of Adrian. Your spoiler-free reviews are really helpful in series like this where they improve--I was kind of avoiding this series because your last two reviews were decidedly "well it's okay kinda" and pointed out things I knew would bug me. Would you recommend reading all of Vampire Academy first? I never really gave that a shot because there was so much vampire-ey stuff floating around at the time.

    1. HE IS SPLENDID. And I'm still waiting for Sydney to prove she's worthy of him. ;)

I love VA way more than I like Bloodlines, so yes--do, do, do read Vampire Academy first. (See my response to Lark above as to specific reasons why.) Adrian makes his first appearance in Book Two, and frankly I still think he's more charming in those books.

And thanks, I try to do spoiler-free whenever I can, even with mid-series installments. Since the aim is ALWAYS to try to get people to read books I love. :)

  16. I'm so glad there's no love triangle in this yet, but I still don't think I'm going to start this spin-off series. For one, the first two books seem to be just average and I'm sure it'd take a lot for me to warm up to Sydney as a protagonist, let alone as a love interest for Adrian. Mead is a great author, but I feel like her series are such a great time-pass, but afterwards, I never really mark them as the most memorable. Perhaps they're just not as well suited for me. Oh, well. I'm glad this series is getting better for you, though, Wendy, and fantastic review as always. Also, I totally agree - Adrian can touch my aura whenever he wants! ;)

    1. Whaaa? Julie, get on Vampire Academy immediately! There are two guys in it, but honestly--it's pretty clear where Rose's heart lies from the very beginning, so I don't really consider it one of those horribly angsty triangles. I hope you will check them out sometime.

  19. Completely agree! I'm really hoping that there a love triangle doesn't come up in the next few books. I'm not a huge fan, but I can deal with them occasionally when the story fits them. (if that makes sense) - but I don't think a love triangle would work in this series.

And yeah. Adrian can touch my aura whenever. (:

    Replies
    1. I hope so too, Tabitha! I don't always mind them if they're done well, but you're right--I don't think it would work for this series. Sydney's already riddled with self-doubt and can barely believe Adrian likes her, so to extend that to another guy would be pushing it.

Hee hee. Lots of Adrian love today. :)

  21. No love triangles and my pants might disappear? SIGN ME UP! I'm with you. I loved VA and read it as you did in one week, so I've had a lot of trouble getting into this series being spread out over months. But I am so excited to hear that it is gaining its stride. I have heard that Sydney gets over some of her annoying fears, and I'm excited for her to make some decisions for herself. And Adrian! As much as I liked him, I never saw him for Rose. But I think he and Sydney have the potential to be great, and I'm excited for Mead to convince me of that.

    1. Hah hah, YES! That Adrian will charm more than your socks off. ;)

I'm so glad we agree on VA! Bloodlines has been rough going for me until now, but it does seem to be picking up momentum. Sydney is definitely less annoying in this book, although I'm still waiting, as you say, to be convinced that she and Adrian are really right for each other. It's just such an adjustment to go from Rose and the awesome kick-assing world of VA to sitting around babysitting high school beauty pageants, you know? But there's better story and conflict here, so hopefully you'll enjoy this one, Lauren. :)

  22. I'm a huge fan of The Vampire Academy series and I LOVE Adrian. I just ordered my copy of Bloodlines yesterday, so I'm hoping I'll enjoy it.

    1. Yay for VA and Adrian love! I hope you enjoy Bloodlines too. I rated that 2.5 and The Golden Lily 3, so you can see the vast improvement in the rating in this book for me. But if you love Rose (as I do--she's one of my favorites, too) just try not to expect another Vampire-style book or heroine. This series is very different from that other world, and it's just starting to get its wings.

      Good luck!

That is SO true :) And YES to the "Adrian is Adrian again"; I always loved Adrian in this series...but in the last two books, he seemed a little "off". But he's definitely back to his charming self again<3 I do admire Sydney's intelligence and her overall character, but I guess she'll never be an absolute favourite heroine of mine..ever. And yes, I prefer Richelle's kickass heroines, at least. I mean, I like more contemplative books or books that feature heroines who are smart/brainy/quietly strong too, but I just don't think RM has a good handle on those types of characters. They are always so ANNOYING.

  32. This is a REALLY shallow thing to say, but I suspect I wouldn't like Sydney at all, because with her personality like that and her face obnoxious (sorry cover model), I just don't see us being friends. Though I did actually kind of like Seth in the Succubus series. However, I think I mostly liked him because he's so not the typical paranormal romance hero. It was a nice break. Blahness is more typical in a heroine. Plus, I love Richelle Mead's sassy heroines who would rather punch first, and deal with consequences later.

I need to finish VA before I can start on Bloodlines though. And the whole Marcus Finch promo does not have me in a hurry to do that.

    1. Sassy is my preference for RM ladies, too! And yeah, I like the scripty flowery-ness of the covers, but I wish the models themselves looked a little less wooden. The tone of the books really doesn't feel like that at all.

How far along are you in VA? I just reread the first 5 books, I'm 1/3 of the way through #6, which is my least favorite. :/ Agreed on the Marcus Finch campaign--talk about oversaturation. And I liked the character, but he does nothing in this particular book that really warrants all that.

  33. Me and Spirit Bound DO NOT make a good chemistry grade. The one and only major flaw of the series. And Wendy get on board with the Sydrian deal. I don't want to have to punish you *readies slingshot*

It's a relief to hear there is no love triangle, well at least not yet anyway. It's good to hear that Sydney isn't so annoying either. I think that she's a great character but there are moments where she drives me crazy. I'm really excited to read this one tomorrow though and I'm definitely excited for more Adrian!

  35. This is one of my all time favourite series and I'm hoping to read my copy of The Indigo Spell next! I'm really happy there is no love triangle and hope Richelle doesn't involve one I can't stand them unless they are done really well!

  36. I've loved Bloodlines since the first book, so of course this was a major swoonfest for me, Wendy. I think I'm one of the few die-hard fans of Sydney from VA and I love her even more after TIS. I'm glad she improved for you in this one. Thank goodness Jill wasn't as irritating as she normally is, although that may be due to the fact she wasn't in this one. Wonderful review! :)
