The Friday Society: ARC giveaway!

November 29, 2012 2012, giveaway, steampunk, Wendy 97

If the notion of kickass girls, steampunk, and turn of the century London appeals to you, The Friday Society by Adrienne Kress may just fit the bill! This story follows three independently-minded girls named Cora, Nellie, and Michiko, who each serve as assistants to powerful men, as they work together to solve a mystery.

Written with sassy humor and packed with lots of action, I think this book would definitely appeal to fans of the Gemma Doyle series, The Girl in the Steel Corset, and possibly Dearly, Departed. And please, that cover is just pinky-swearing that it will be fun.

Win a copy of the ARC!

The Friday Society will be available in bookstores next week on December 6, but thanks to our friends at Dial, we’re pleased to offer our readers the opportunity to win an ARC here on the blog. All you have to do is fill out the Rafflecopter form with your contact info and leave a comment below!

Open internationally to readers aged 18 and older, or 13 and older with parental permission. Please see the Rafflecopter form for full contest rules. Good luck!

I think the combination of YA and steampunk is very appealing. I can’t seem to get enough of the steampunk genre so I’m really anticipating this book!

  2. Annegret

I really love steampunk. It combines the Victorian Age and technology. This fascinates me. Would like to read this book.

  3. Bonnie R

As much as I want to love steampunk, that genre has been real hit or miss for me. Mostly miss unfortunately. But this one? Definitely going to have to check this one out, it sounds like so much fun!

  4. Natalie S.

I enjoy steampunk novels because of the juxtaposition of the old and new coming together. It’s just such fun to re-live the fashions and sensibilities of the Victorian era while throwing in a bunch of crazy technology. Plus this book seems to have three kick butt heroines!

  5. Sinmotion

I remember seeing you read this Wendy! I want to know how much more awesome than her look-alike LiLo, this Heroine is!

This looks like all kinds of fun! Looking forward to it!

(Not sure why OpenId is listing me as “unknown”. Weird.)

I love steampunk because its has a bit of historical fiction mixed with fantasy, but somehow still futuristic~

  8. Rizka

I haven’t read any books in the steampunk genre yet. I couldn’t find one that really intrigues me, but this one sounds good! Thank you for the giveaway :)

  9. Munnaza

Thank you so much for this giveaway! I love kickass heroines and though the only steampunk novel I’ve read is Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, I love the way most of them craft their universes, and the creative ways steampunk authors illustrate the world. I’m really looking forward to checking this book out. Thanks so much for your review!

I’ve just gotten into steampunk, and I love it! It combines Victorian mores with sci-fi technology and adventure!

  12. Ersla

A novel very attractive with a stunning cover. Steampunk is a genre on the rise, will reign over the next year.

  13. Sophia

I love mysteries–I don’t read enough of them, I don’t think! And sassy humor? I’m ALL for it. I love books that can mix action and laughter, and this book sounds like a perfect example of that! I hadn’t heard of The Friday Society before.

  14. Hellogoodgaby

I love steampunk because it has all the parts I like from the Victorian era but also tons of action, adventure, and usually intelligent, kick ass heroines! Can’t wait to read this book.

  15. Terri Bynum

I have only recently discovered Steampunk thanks to “Masque of the Red Death” by Bethany Griffin. I started reading it thinking it was strictly Dystopian & I truly didn’t really know what Steampunk was; it was during that time that I started reading more about the genre (thanks to blogs like yours!) and I’m in love with it.

Thanks to you for your most generous giveaway AND for what you do; I’m a 46-year-old lover of YA and it’s nice to have your take on these books!!

  16. Melissa

I am a fan of all things steampunk and I have been loving all these new steampunk books popping up everywhere. As an added plus, the main characters look like they’re going to be kick-butt heroines. Can’t beat that.

  17. Jen

I love science and historical fiction nd stem punk combines the two! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

  18. Ina M.

I’ve been into Gothic for a good while now, and somehow my interest in Steampunk gradually developed, although I’m still a newbie to the genre! I’d totally love to read more, and as I’ve known Adrienne from Twitter for a while, I’m most eager to read her debut novel. Not to mention kickass girls are a favourite of mine!

  19. Kara_Malinczak

Steampunk is one of my favorite genres. And Dearly, Departed was one of my favorite books last year so I think I will do well with this one. Thank you for hosting it!

  20. bebelllllllll

/i’ve been captivated by steampunk since reading the Leviathan series by Scott Westerfeld and since than, I have read many other amazing ones like The Parasol Protectorate and The Girl in The Steel Corset. And Friday society sounds amazing!

  21. Daisy

I’ve been eyeing this one for some time now and it looks SO GOOD! Kickass heroines and London are always words that pull me in and I need to read more steampunk :) And I LOVED the Gemma Doyle series!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  22. Jaime Lester

Honestly, most of the books that I have read that are deemed Steampunk haven’t necessarily been Steampunk. But I love the idea behind it, and I think I could live with some hard core steampunkery if it ever came my way. As for this book, it just sounds awesome. If the chicks are truly independent (which in my mind should mean some badassery), then they are my kind of characters. And the cover rocks, so that helps too!

  23. Twisty J

I have been waiting for this for months now! Thanks for the chance to read a steampunk novel with a cast of strong leading ladies!

  24. KtTurner

I loved Dearly, Departed and it was my first steampunk. I love the cover and the sound of this book and can’t wait for it’s release. Thank you for the opportunity to win an ARC, my fingers are crossed.

  25. Gabbie

Steampunk London is one of my favourite places to get lost in in a book. I’ll pretty much read anything Steampunk but The Friday Society has something really going for it if the chicks are kick-ass and the action is packed :)

  26. Amy

I love steampunk, so right off the bat this book appealed to me there. But mostly the synopsis got me. A girl-powered steampunk where the protagonists come together to kick ass and take names? Come on, that’s golden right there! Plus the cover is gorgeous and fun

  27. Katie

I haven’t ever really gotten into steampunk, so I’m hoping this one will change everything for me. It sounds like boot-stompin’ fun. Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. jh

I like faux-steampunk with modern sensibilities, and I’ve seen a lot of lovely reviews of this book.

  29. Carmen B.

Steampunk is awesome, and I love how many YA books seem to be coming out at the moment and that the heroines in this one are butt-kicking, determined women! It’s like Victorian literature updated for the 21st century.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  30. Aspen Firefly

The cover is amazing! Plus I haven’t read very many steampunk novels even though I love steampunk. I’m really excited to read this!

  31. Tammy Sparks

I love steampunk, and I especially love that this one is about kick-ass female protagonists!I’m getting a great vibe from the cover. Can’t wait to read it, and thanks for the giveaway!

  32. Steph

I’d love to win this book because it has three kick butt heroines and it’s set in steampunk! I haven’t read much of steampunk yet, but I find it really fascinating and I can’t wait to read more! Thanks for the giveaway!!

  33. nrlymrtl

I love the mix of technology and old fashioned world. It’s a world ripe with tension and mystery. It’s great to see how various authors make use of this scene.

  34. Charlie

Reminded me so much of Charlie’s Angels. I’ve read one or two steampunk novels and it gives me the thrill I would only usually feel while reading dystopian novels.

  35. nrlymrtl

The mix of technology and old fashioned world is such an attraction, as it creates a world ripe with tension and possibilities. I love seeing how authors make use of this setting.

  36. Jo@home

I like how the girls are “independent.” It doesn’t seem like we get enough of that in books. The turn of the century London setting is also very appealing to me as a reader!

  37. Jo@home

I’m excited about how the girls are “independent.” It seems like we don’t get enough of that in books. Also the turn of the century London really interests me too!

  38. Carina Olsen

Awesome review :D Glad you loved this book ;) Sigh. I want this book. Because the cover is gorgeous. And the summary is amazing! Have not read that many steampunk books.. I think. A bit unsure. But I did love The Iron Thorn books :D

  39. Lark

I just read the Book Smugglers’ review of this book, so clearly, someone wants me to read it! What appeals to me the most is the idea of three strong female characters working together. Too often, if a fantasy book has a strong female lead, she’s isolated from her own sex in one way or another; it’s the one girl and some guys. I want more fantasy books with strong female friendships, and this one appears to have just that.

  40. Kaethe

I like steampunk because so many of the books seem to be Victorian without the misogyny or racism. I see it as a way to write history that is more inclusive, bringing overlooked characters to the fore. Plus, who doesn’t love kickass chicks?

  41. Christina

If this comes Midnight Garden approved, I am all over it. As to why I like steampunk, I think it’s that women tend to come extra sassy in this genre, which I always approve of. :)

  42. Jasprit

Aww Wendy this book sounds fabulous! I have yet to pick up a steampunk novel, but out of the ones I’ve seen floating around I think this one appeals to me the most! Ever since I finished The Diviners I adore sassy characters, so I think me and this book will get on juts great! Thanks so much for the giveaway! :)

  43. Tanja - Tanychy

Oh this is great! I’ve been planing on reading this book cause it sounds really good! :) My girl Glass is even more excited so we’d both enjoy! Thanks for the giveaway!! :)

  44. Sabryy

I would love to read this book! The cover is really nice and it seems like a good read. I like the books with kickass girls! :))

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  45. Sam Marchello

I met Adrienne Kress at Fan Expo this year, and while she wasn’t giving away ARCs for the book, she did hype this one up pretty hard for me as a lover of all things steampunk. The girls sound bad ass, which is something I want to see more of in YA fiction. Plus Michiko sounds hardcore. :D

  46. Becca

I’ve had this one on my “to read” list for a while, so I’m glad it’s coming out soon!!!

  47. Stephanie

This looks like it will be a very fun read, all things I love. *crosses fingers* And that cover? Just the sort that draws me to it.

  48. Sabina

I love the cover. Kissass girls, mystery, and some sassy humour! Yes please! This sounds awesome. I can’t wait to read it.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  50. ahz1

Steampunk is one of my favorite genres. I love the whimsical contraptions and the airships….

  51. Karen

Steampunk is usually hit or miss for me but this one sounds like so much fun – I can’t resist.

  52. Suzanne Earley

This might be a duplicate, but…

Steam punk is becoming a favorite genre, and I’m definitely looking forward to this one. I was glad to read your positive review!

  53. Melissa @ Mel's Books and Info

I came across this novel when I was looking for a steampunk title for a friend and absolutely loved the cover. I am a big fan of Girl in the Steel Corset, so I am anxious to read more steampunk. I definitely need to pick up Dearly Departed too–I started that one, but had to return it to the library for a hold. Thanks for the contest!

  54. annaaainafairytalee.

Everything about Steampunk is invigoratingly exciting. Combine that with London during industrialization, the broadening of motorcars, corsets and suffragettes and I was hooked. Mystery books are wicked awesome, and has the feel of a Winspear’s Massie Dobbs detective stories.

  55. Lili

I really love steampunk because it brings something new to the table. Sure, the inventions are odd and unique twists on things that are around today, but back in the day such things were never thought able to exist. Steampunk gives the author the opportunity to write a really unique twist into their story, which I often enjoy!

  56. Vicky :S

I love steampunk because is very funny reading about inventions in a really old era.. and adding a mistery… totally cool! The cover is awesome… I wonder what’s the adventure behind those girls! Thanks for the contest :)

  57. blaqheart

The cover looks amazing. Like duks castro, I also instantly thought by looking at the cover and reading the description that it sounds a bit like Charlie’s Angels. London, Steampunk and Kickass girls – perfect combo!

  58. Emily Elizabeth

I haven’t read many steampunk novels, but the ones I have read, I’ve really enjoyed. (Especially The Parasol Protectorate!) I have been looking forward to this book, so thanks for the chance to win, ladies! :)

I think the whole “steampunk” era is unique, everyone has their own interpretation on what they think it is.

And a “Charlie’s Angels: Steampunk Edition” is so good, I want to read this book!
