Lenore Appelhans’ Thankgiving Recipe + LEVEL 2 Giveaway

Welcome to Day Three of our Debut Authors Celebration!

We’re tremendously grateful that publishers take the time to nurture new talent, so this week we’re featuring a mini celebration of 2013 debuts. We’re very excited to welcome Lenore Appelhans to the blog today! Not only does she have a sci-fi thriller coming out in January, but she’s also been an active YA blogger for some time; many GoodReaders are probably familiar with her reviews.

Level 2 is the story of Felicia Ward, who died right before her 18th birthday and has been trapped in a strange, otherworldly afterlife ever since. As Felicia uncovers the secrets behind her confinement, she is pulled towards both romance and rebellion…and it might just be up to her to save the lives of countless others.

This sounds like such a fun book, and I know that I’m not alone in my eagerness to read it. In the meantime, please say hello to Lenore as she shares a tasty recipe for Thanksgiving leftovers below, along with a fantastic Level 2 prize pack!

Lenore Appelhans’ Thanksgiving Memory

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays but because I live abroad, it’s the one I miss the most often. The traditional US Thanksgiving – with turkey, football and the Macy’s parade – is not available in the rest of the world. This year, I’ll be with my family in the US to celebrate, but there have been many years when I’ve had to come up with an alternate Thanksgiving meal due to limited local availability of ingredients. In Denmark (a country just to the north of Germany where I currently live) smørrebrød is an open-faced sandwich piled high with delicious toppings (often fish). I invented this Thanksgiving smørrebrød and I love it so much I even eat it throughout the year. It’s especially good for the day after Thanksgiving, when you have tons of leftover turkey and can’t bear any more cranberry sauce or stuffing.

Of course Thanksgiving is more than just food, and this year – with my debut novel coming out in less than two months – I have a ton to be thankful for. I am so appreciative of the amazing support I’ve gotten from friends, family, everyone at my literary agency and publishers (US and foreign), booksellers, librarians, fellow authors (debut and otherwise), the book blogging community and readers who have written me about their experience reading LEVEL 2. THANK YOU!

Level 2 book giveaway: I have read this author so would be excited to read it Thanks for the giveaway

  2. Shauna

Level 2 has been on my to-read list for a while now! The premise sounds really compelling & unique, and that cover just pulls you in! I’m very excited to read it! :)

  3. GillyB

Every review I’ve read about this book just makes it sound amazing. And I’m so hungry that Lenore’s sandwich ALSO sounds amazing, and I hate tomatoes! So go figure. But this book. I can’t WAIT to read it.

  4. Kayla Beck

I would have never thought to put turkey and tarter sauce together – it makes me wonder what you’ll be putting together in Level 2! ;-)

  5. Roxanne Gillies

I like the concept of this book, I’ve read some books where the main character is dead but this one sound unique. I’m looking forward to reading it.

  6. Kirsten!

The concept sounds really neat. I don’t think I’ve read a book that combines science fiction with a story about the afterlife. Also, I <3 thrillers.

  7. Christina

Missing out on Thanksgiving is such a sad thought. Delicious turkey and graving! Ahhhh!

Just fyi, Lenore’s brook is great, and I’m expecting Level 3 to be even more awesome!

  8. iLuvReadingTooMuch

Lenore’s blogging advice helped me get through the what-to-know and ARC 101, so I’m so excited to see she has a new book coming out! Totally can’t wait to read it :D Thanks for the great giveaway!!

  9. Melissa

I saw Jaime @ The Perpetual Page-Turner reading this one and, from her enthusiasm, it seems like a not-to-be-missed title for 2013!

  10. Pa-ru

Thanks for the recipe Lenore and congrats on your debut. Hope both you and Wendy had a wonderful thanksgiving. The premise of Level 2 is interesting and yes, the cover is really neat. I’ll be looking forward to the book ^O^.

  11. SarahO

The cover of this book is so different from everything else out there, and definitely in a good way. It’s very video game-y, which makes sense with the title and description so I’m really looking forward to reading it.

  12. elena

oh em gee, I have a craving for an open face sandwich right now. that is an EXCELLENT idea for leftovers!! I’m so excited for this book because I love Lenore’s blog and people have been saying super nice things about it, I think the concept is really cool. :D

  13. Stephanie Sinclair

Ohhhh, that looks tasty! That’s similar to what my mom usually does with her leftover turkey. :)

Good luck with Level 2’s release! Just around the corner! :)

  14. Rachel

Oh wow, Thanksgiving would be the time of year to get really homesick, but Denmark sounds like an amazing place to live as well. Level 2 sounds exciting! Thanks for the recipe and giveaway, and have a lovely holiday Wendy and Lenore! :)

  15. riceball1759 / Janis Katherine

I was notified of Level 2’s release so early and I thought how could I possibly wait so long?! I can’t wait to read it:)

Thank you for this awesome opportunity (which I found through Pinterest xD) and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  16. readingdate

It’s been fun following this debut author/thanksgiving feature this week, Wendy! I’ve had Level Two on my GR for close to two years now, and I’m excited that the release date is finally approaching. That sandwich does look interesting, and I’ll have to try and veganize it some time.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  17. Steph

This book sounds really awesome – I love the whole kick ass heroine! And a sword!! Too cool! Thanks for the great giveaway!

  18. kay - Infinite Shelf

I am so looking forward to Level 2! I’ve been following Lenore for years and can’t wait to see what she has in store for her readers. Thanks for the giveaway!

  19. Julianna Helms

Darn it! I left a comment on my phone, but I guess it didn’t work.

So: thank you so much for this giveaway. Lenore sounds awesome, as does her book. I’m even more excited because since Lenore is a blogger herself, I can count on the major pitfalls of YA not present in LEVEL 2. :D And the bread sounds fabulous, too! :D

    Happy Thanksgiving! <3

  20. Ashley @ Book Labyrinth

    Thanks for the giveaway! =)

It always feels funny to have all this Thanksgiving talk so close to Christmas, since in Canada we celebrate at the beginning of October. It’s also cool, though, because it gives me a chance to have 2 times to really stop and be thankful.

  21. Tammy Sparks

I love hearing about the different author’s recipes, what a great idea! (although I’m not so sure about Lenore’s recipe:)) Can’t wait to read Level 2! Thanks for such a great giveaway, Wendy:)

  22. Jessica R

That open-faced sandwich sounds like a great idea for the post-Thanksgiving leftovers! Although I must admit that I could never get tired of stuffing. You got some great authors to take part in this feature! Lots of books I’m excited about :)

  23. Vivien

I’m so excited for Lenore!! I’m a blog follower of hers and getting to know her has been great. I am also from Germany (Army). I can’t wait to meet her at her Launch in January :)

  24. Chey

I love being able to get little glimpses of authors lives! Don’t quite know what I’d do without my traditional thanksgiving meal (especially the sweet potatoes)!

Can’t wait to read Level 2! Thanks for the giveaway!

  25. Aspen Firefly

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. We always put up our Christmas tree around Thanksgiving and since my family usually eats in separate parts of the house, it is a time when we all come together at the table for a meal.

  26. Sam

I’ve never really experienced Thanksgiving to know what it’s like to miss it. It’s not a huge holiday over here. :)

Another great post! Level 2 sounds like a really interesting read! :)

  27. Aneeqah

Wow, what fantastic timing! I chose this book for my WoW pick today, I’m that excited for it! Level 2 sounds so fantastically unique, I can’t wait to dive into it.

Lovely post, and thank you for the giveaway! <3 I'm adding this to my list of recipes to try. =)

  28. Candace

I’m VERY excited for Level 2! I remember when we first heard she was going to be published, such awesome news! And such a long wait! So I’m very excited about the giveaway!

I’m a vegetarian, so no meat for me, however, I do make veggie sandwich’s. But because of all the lettuce and, well, toppling ingredients, I prefer to pack it in a pita.

  29. Annabelle Marie Veronica

I am so, so excited to read Level 2! I’m not really into vegetables, haha, but I might make this one anyway because it looks adorable. I love that she lives near Denmark, too–that’s awesome! a fabulous, fun, and truly enjoyable celebration :) xx

  30. Ashleigh Paige

I don’t even like most of the ingredients that go into that (picky, picky eater, I am), but that looks so delicious. -tries to clean up the drool-

Thank you for the giveaway and Happy Thanksgiving, ladies!

  31. Katta

The cover is so visually arresting, it just makes you want to read it! i can’t wait for this one in 2013!

  32. Lili Feinberg

Without a doubt one of the books that I am most looking forward to. I love books that have to do with some sort of limbo.

Thank you for the chance to win!

  33. Tanja - Tanychy

This book sounds really good! :) I haven’t seen it before but now I’m curious :) Honestly I can’t wait to read your review for it :)

    Wendy thanks for sharing! :)

  34. sarabara081 @ Forever 17 Books

I love Thanksgiving so it would be hard for me to be away from the US on such a holiday. The sandwich replacement looks pretty good though! I am really looking forward to reading this book. Thanks for sharing! :)

  35. Keertana

Goodness, that sandwich looks amazing! I really can’t wait to read this one – it looks fabulous and all the preliminary reviews have been stunning, so I’m sure I’ll like it. Thanks for the giveaway! :)

  36. Leannessf

Thanks for the leftovers idea! I also can’t stand too much cranberry sauce (yuck!).

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  37. Bonnie R

Thanksgiving is definitely my favorite holiday (and every 13 years or so it’s also my birthday :D) but I would definitely miss it if I lived outside the U.S.
Level 2 sounds fantastic and is definitely on my 2013 reading list!

  38. drey

I’m so excited for Lenore – have been following her blog for quite a long time now! Can’t wait to check out Level 2! :) Congrats, Lenore!

  39. starryeyedjen

I’m soooo excited to read Level 2. It’s one of the 2013 debuts I’m most looking forward to. Books about the afterlife fascinate me. And I’m loving all of these recipes! :D
