The Preloved Celebration Continues!

Tomorrow, Shirley is headed to The Tales Compendium to answer a stack of very fun questions. So if you’ve ever wondered what she’s secretly good at, what she sings in the shower (and let’s face it, who hasn’t) and the biggest lesson she ever learnt in school, follow her there.

Do be sure to check out Shirley’s website, blog, and GoodReads as well. She’s a great author to chat with, who writes funny, heartfelt reviews that you’re sure to enjoy. And remember, Preloved is available now at Fishpond.com with free shipping worldwide. A day after our review hit, we had a little scare because we heard the book was already sold out on that site! But it looks like it’s back in stock again, so if you’re interested, snap this one up while you can.

    Happy birthday Shirley!
And thank you guys for this giveaway!
This post reminds me of how little I know about the 80s, oops.

  2. Evie

OK, Wendy, you seriously get me hyperventilating with the awesome giveaways you host here regularly, and seriously, if I don’t win one of them I will be crying :P
Just look at this! Birthday celebration (LOVE the video! Shirley is absolutely gorgeous and sooooo lovely!!!) – Happy Birthday Shirley!!! :D *throws confetti!*
I’m extremely excited for Preloved.. I can’t even express how much I want this book. And the necklace is beautiful! :) What a fabulous, breathtaking giveaway!!! *swoon~!*

    OK< enough rambling!
My favorite movie quote would be:

“Yippee-ki-yay, motherf***er!” (‘Die Hard’) – huge fan of Bruce Willis here :)

    and

“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” (‘Back to the Future’) – loved all the Back to the Future movies! <3

Thanks for a great contest! Fingers crossed!!! :)

    • Wendy Darling

Omg, Evie, that is such a classic quote and movie! I mean Die Hard, but they’re both awesome. :) I hope you get a chance to read this one soon, the book is just as adorable as its writer!

  3. Sita

Umm…I am so bad with quotes, but there is one that I do remember from “Sixteen Candles”: when Jake calls her (OMG and I’m apparently bad with names, too–can’t remember Molly’s name!!!) and the grandma answers, and he says “Eat me!” (Umm. Or was it bite me?)

  4. Sita

This is a fantastic giveaway! That cake looks amazing, and the necklace is GORGEOUS! Happy birthday, Shirley. :-) Hope your wish comes true!

  5. Rachel Green

I can’t believe no one has mentioned Long Duk Dong from Sixteen Candles! So many great quotes from that movie, but I think my favorite is “Oh sexy girlfriend!”

Great post Wendy. I’m new to your blog and really loving reading all the reviews! My Goodreads TBR list is now out of control. :)

    • Wendy Darling

Aw, thanks for stopping by, Rachel! I always snoop my friends’ shelves for book recs too, so I’m happy to return the favor. :)

  6. Heather@The Flyleaf Review

Fave 80s movie quote: This one came to mind first, by the irrepressible John Bender of The Breakfast Club.

“Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?”

    Fun contest, thanks Wendy:)

    • Wendy Darling

I love ALL your picks, Sana–and I got them all for my husband the one year I did an eBay birthday for him with stuff from his childhood. Minus the shoulder pads, of course. ;)

  7. Kelly

“You’re a neo maxi zoom dweebie.”

John Bender – The Breakfast Club

Probably my fave 80’s movie actually.

  8. Lee723

I was actually born in the late 80’s, so I like quite a bit about it! The movies, the music, the fashion, even!

Movie-wise I’d have to say my favs are: Flashdance, Footloose, and GREMLINS! heehee.
I keep thinking about how you’re not supposed to get the Gremlins wet! They were such cuties otherwise though.

As for the music… Def a Madonna fan!
U2, Bangles, Blondie, Bon Jovi – LIVING ON A PRAYER. Sigh. Bryan Adams’ ‘Heaven’, A-HA, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, The Cure. Yep, I can go on and ON about the music from back then.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway, Wendy!

    xo

    Lisa @ Fic Talk

    • Wendy Darling

GREMLINS is so much fun! A great cheesy movie to watch every once in awhile during Christmas, hah. Such great music picks too, all of those are ones I strongly associate with that era. :)

  9. A.J.

Loved the vlog! Shirley is so cute, and Preloved sounds awesome. :)

Honestly, I don’t feel like I know much about the 80s, since the 90s was my childhood. I do know, though, that I enjoy laughing whenever I see pictures of the…colorful fashion and hair. heh Sorry, just can’t help myself! ;D As for movies, I really liked the movie Sixteen Candles. Can’t remember any quotes, but I know a lot of things cracked me up in that movie. It was great. :)

    Thank you for the giveaway!

  10. Juanita

Regarding my favorite 80s movie quote, the first movie I thought of was Labyrinth, and it’s cheesy, but I like the end when she remembers the line she always had trouble remembering – “you have no power over me.” When I was a kid though, my favorite movie was totally the Lost Boys. My friends and I watched it at every slumber party we had, and we always rewound the part where Sam finds out Michael is becoming a vampire and he says, “My own brother, a blankety-blank shit sucking vampire. Wait til Mom finds out, buddy!” I find we just liked the cursing.

    • Wendy Darling

Oh man, LOST BOYS! That was such fun to see back in the day. It still has a certain angsty appeal, hah, but it’s funny how a lot of the moves we love as kids seem different as adults.

  11. Betsy

My fav fab would have to be BIG hair. I still get caught every once and a while with big hair. Happy birthday Shirley, and thanks for the chance for this awesome giveaway.

  12. HellyBelly

    Happy Birthday to Shirley!
My favourite film from the 80’s: Escape from New York. Me and my cousin went to the cinema five (5) times just to drool over Kurt Russell.

  13. Caitlin

Alrighty…my favourite thing from the 80s…probably being born. But with the Back to the Future movies coming in a close second.

Also, dude. This book sounds awesome.

OH my god. I was just reading some of the other comments and…The Neverending Story! Forget being bad! Luck Dragons are the best thing ever! I used to pretend….I don’t know I can share it’s possibly the most nerdy thing about my childhood…but I used to sit under the dining room table and pretend I was the technician controlling Falkor.

You know, not someone from the fantastical story or anything, nono. Film crew. No wonder I ended up taking Technical Theatre in college.

  14. vicky_phung2

I wasn’t born in the 80s but I do love it because Back to the Future, my favorite movie, came out during the 80s. I just adore Michael J. Fox. And because of this movie, I love high-waisted shorts! I’ve never watched The Princess Bride, but now I will check it out for sure. My mom loves to watch movies from the 80s but I can’t name any at the moment.

    • Wendy Darling

Oh wow, high-waisted shorts. I forgot about those…but I will never forget Michael J. Fox! I love Back to the Future, and yes, you definitely have to check out Princess Bride. Such a classic!

  15. Rachel

Oh.My.Goodness!! I love this post!! I love hearing Shirley talk!! Love the Aussie accent! Hope she has an amazing birthday. :) I can’t wait to read Preloved, sounds like just my kind of read.

    Favorite 80s quote, song, movie?:
I always loved (and said quite often) “Gag me with spoon!”

This is an extremely cheesy movie but I loved it as well: Valley Girl with Nicholas Cage. So many hilarious moments! Of course Empire Strikes Back was one of my all-time favorites back then. I love the mention of Blade Runner! Fab!

Song: Love My Way by Psychedelic Furs
    and soooo many more.

Awesome post and giveaway!! I want to win, BADLY!!

  16. Amber J.

I was only a little kid but I remember so much…

Favorite item of clothing: Skants (skirt + pants) – I wore them religiously

Favorite accessory: Michael Jackson LA Gear sneakers (they cost like $80 back then!)

Favorite TV show: JEM (& the Holograms)

Favorite movie: The Neverending Story (I wanted a flying dog like Falkor so baaad lol)

    • Wendy Darling

AMBER. I love that you brought up the MJ LA Gear sneaks! I totally forgot about those. And Jem, of course Jem! I was telling Flann that I wasn’t sure the “totally outrageous” part of the title was obvious, but I’m glad to know at least one person probably recognized what I was going for, hah.

  17. Angie

    Happy Birthday, Shirley!!!

I wasn’t alive in the 80s, but I love that decade!!! But my brain is pulling a blank on movie quotes…aah! I can tell you my favorite 80s song though: “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher!!!

My favorite 80s fad…neon colors!!! And lace fingerless gloves. Thanks, Madonna! :D

    • Wendy Darling

Oh, Madonna! And fingerless gloves and neon! So great. And it’s all back in fashion now, isn’t that funny? Good stuff. :)

  18. Lynn K.

    Happy Birthday Shirley!

I’m not familiar with the stuff of the 80’s, being of the ‘younger generation’ (not that I’m really into the current trends and stuff anyways). But I’m hoping reading Preloved would give me a better idea of the 80’s. :D

  19. K.

Rockin’ post! And that cake is making my teeth ache! Like Reynje, I’m not eligible but I still want to participate. This is a quote from Dead Poets Society, which I’m sure you’ve all read in some Quotes website:

“We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

    And obviously, John Hughes.

    • Wendy Darling

Trust you to come up the quote that “hits me in the heart,” as you would say, K. :) LOVE. Dead Poets Society was such a fundamental film of that era–amazing stuff. Now I have the urge to watch it again soon!

  20. rocksann

    Happy Birthday, Shirley!
Favorite 80’s quote: Nobody puts Baby in a corner (Dirty Dancing)

Thanks for the awesome giveaway =)

  21. imaginaryones

Happy birthday Shirley! Wish I could pick up this book and wish that my local library could pick up this book as well! It sounds so great, especially with the involvement of an Asian mother and superstitions (which was what I grew up with).

    80s…hmm…
The band I loved from the 80s? Bon Jovi!
    Or The Police!

I was born in the late 80s though, so unfortunately can’t remember most of the fads.

  22. elena

Aww, Shirley sounds so lovely! Happy birthday!!! I hope it’s sweet. The story about seeing her grandfather’s ghost is really interesting, a bit eery!

OK NOW FOR THE SUPER LONG PORTION OF THE COMMENT! Oh my gosh, this question is totally up to my speed and I don’t know what to pick!!! My first instinct for quotes was anything from Heathers. I love “Chaos was what killed the dinosaurs, darling” and “Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullshit now has a body count.”

and uhhh holy eff, I love 80s music esp since I am a huge huge fan of cheesy synth pop and the 80s had that in SPADES. A LIST!

The Clash – Should I Stay or Should I Go
Orange Juice – Rip It Up (probably one of my favourite songs, everything about this! sax solo!)
    Soft Cell – Tainted Love
Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Around (dear god this song is so effing catchy, I have a playlist with this & the song below and play it on repeat for hours)
The Human League – Don’t You Want Me (don’t don’t you want me! love the music video too, so weird!)
Blondie – Heart of Glass (oh my gosh, I get SO EXCITED every time I hear this song, perfect pop)
A Flock of Seagulls – I Ran (this was also on the playlist that I put repeat on for hours. the video for it is so dumb, I LOVE IT)
Violent Femmes – Blister In the Sun (great opening notes!!)
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – If You Leave, Enola Gay (thank you Pretty in Pink for the former!)
New Order – Bizarre Love Triangle (I have a lot of feelings for their music/Joy Division)
Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place (ahhh so good!! another one of my favourites. “a real honest kind of love song”)

OTHERS: Michael Jackson, duh. Thriller is a classic for a reason. Billie Jean has such a sick beat. Come on Eileen. Fight For Your Right. Run DMC. Ahh sorry I got so carried away, I know you said a short list! I got so excited! BASICALLY IF IT IS NEW WAVE OR AN 80S JAM, I AM INTO IT.

PS. I am actually not a child of the 80s.

    • Wendy Darling

I love this post so much, Elena–you totally sent my husband and me on a trip down memory lane, hah. AWESOME music picks! Love all of them, especially “Don’t You Want Me.” Such a classic!

  23. Vivien

I love Shirley!!! Definitely a new fan. Her books are so hard to find! I’ve been becoming a huge Aussie fan. I love all things Ferris Bueller.

“Bueller … Bueller … Bueller …” (‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’)

    • Wendy Darling

Ferris Bueller is such a classic–somehow it just never gets old. :) We love Shirley, too! And it’s a shame her books are so hard to get, but it’s fortunate that Fishpond seems to be keeping them in stock these days.

  24. Sarah (saz101)

OK, Shirley is SO CUTE. SERIOUSLY… oooh, and cake *drools*

LOVE the tour stop (actually, really enjoying all of Shirley’s! Loving the photos). THank yoooou! And, umm… my fave 80’s quote… err… oh, I know! YES! “As you wish.” From the Princess Bride. SO glad it ended up being an eighties film (I had to check ;D)

SO glad to see an Aussie author getting some love! ♥

    • Wendy Darling

It’s kind of been an Aussie week here on the blog, hah. Between two Shirley features, Night Beach, and Reluctant Hallelujah, you’d think that Aussies had taken over the world! ;)

  25. KM

I was born in ’90, so this is hard. How about my favorite bit being the crazy hair/metal bands! Love me some Bon Jovi and “Slippery When Wet.” And really, the hair makes the band. :)

  26. Lexie

I, sadly, do not know all that much about the 80s, but I am also a huge Back to the Future fan.

I can’t decide on one favorite quote, but I do remember one part where Marty is looking at his Uncle Joey, only a baby at the time.

So you’re my Uncle Joey. Better get used to these bars, kid.

    It made me giggle.

Very happy birthday to Shirley! Loved the video, loved the cake, and love the concept of Preloved. (That’s a lot of loves in one sentence.)

  27. A Canadian Girl

Happy Birthday, Shirley! That cake in the background looks delicious!

I wasn’t alive in the 80s but the clothes from that era are hysterical.

  28. Sam

Happy Birthday to Shirley! I want a piece of that cake! ;)

It’s great to hear Shirley talk about Preloved – the more I hear about that book, the more I want to read it! Thanks for sharing this with us. :)

    • Wendy Darling

All the blog stops have been great so far, Sam–it’s fun even for those of us who have already read the book! Shirley is endlessly amusing, hah.

  29. _Sandra_

    Happy Birthday, Shirley! :)

Favorite quotes from an 80s movies:

    * “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” (‘Back to the Future’)
    * “Nobody puts Baby in a corner.” (‘Dirty Dancing’)
    * “Bueller … Bueller … Bueller …” (‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’)

When I think of 80s, I think of blue eyeshadow, pink lipstick, perms and bleach hair, scrunchies, shoulder pads, leg warmers, break dancing, cassette tapes, Cyndi Lauper, Van Halen, Guns’ N’ Roses.. Crazy times! LOL!

    • Wendy Darling

Oh man, bleached hair and perms and scrunchies! And break dancing! It’s so funny how everyone keeps coming up with new things I’d forgotten about, hah. Awesome picks, Sandra!

  30. Joanna

Happy birthday Shirley, you are such a sweetheart!

Aaand my favourite 80s quote (that I can think of right now)?

Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

    - The Princess Bride
…or anything that ever passed through Inigo’s lips, really.

  31. Ashleigh

But I hardly know anything about the eighties! -scrambles for something-

Wait, I know! The hair.. Hair in the eighties was crazy and makes me feel better when I’m having a bad hair day.

Happy birthday, Shirley! May you have many more (and produce more surely-amazing books for readers to drool over).

  32. Missie, The Unread Reader

How freaking adorable is Shirley Marr!!! I kind of want to be her!

And are you kidding me? I loved the 80’s! They totally rocked my world.

    Favorite quote ever:
    “I carried a watermelon.”
    ~Baby, Dirty Dancing, 1987

  33. Heidi@Rainy Day Ramblings

Happy Birthday to the lovely Ms. Shirley. I am stalking her tour and it has been so fun. Loved her post yesterday. Anyway being a teenager in the late 80’s there are so many iconic things about that decade. For me one of my absolute favorite 80’s movies is Stand By Me…I had fun chatting with Flannery on this one a couple of weeks ago…so many great lines from the movie that won’t make sense unless you see it, but one of them is “Did Lard Ass have to pay to get into the pie eating contest?” or “Seven cents, Vern.” or “I brought the comb.” Another great 80’s movie is Princess Bride with the famous, “As you Wish” “Inconceivable” and “Have Fun Storming the Castle.” Hmm as far as 80’s song..stuff, Carebears, Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony. How about Jelly shoes and jelly bracelets, friendship bracelets, Baggy sweatshirts, aqua net and listening to the radio all day so you could tape your favorite song and hope that the stupid DJ didn’t talk during it!
Thanks for the giveaway. Congrats Shirely on your release :)

    • Heidi@Rainy Day Ramblings

I just remebered one of my other fav lines from Back To The Future, “Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the Earth’s gravitational pull?”

    • Wendy Darling

Hah, great picks, Heidi. I loved STAND BY ME! I think it was a defining film for that era. And that song just played over and over again on the radio because of the movie. *sigh*

  34. readingdate

I’ve been having such a fun time following this tour and learning more about the book. Loved Shirley’s poolside vlog birthday party and hearing what inspired her to write Preloved.

In terms of 80s movies – I love them all but probably my favorite is Say Anything.
“I gave her my heart and she gave me a pen.” — Lloyd Dobler

  35. Michelle

At the risk of making myself look VERY dorky…I used to pretty well say every line of Labyrinth along with the actors. My favorite parts were when the worm says to Sarah, “‘Ello.” Sarah; “Did you just say ‘hello’?” Worm: “No, I said ‘Ello, but that’s close enough.”
And then, of course, “Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen from me. For my will is as strong as yours and my kingdom is as great…you have no power over me!” OR “You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power. What Power? The power of Voodoo. Who do? You do. Do what? Remind me of the babe!”

As for fads, I submit the plastic chain with the clip-on plastic charms with bells, the unabashedly high hair (punked with gell or teased with hairspray, it was all good), and unabashedly creepy cartoons (Smurfs, Carebears, Masters of the Universe, Transformers, the originals were all weird.)

    • Wendy Darling

LOVE 80s cartoons, including all the ones you mentioned. I was so excited when they started releasing them on DVD! Remember Gummi Bears? Sometimes I hum “bouncing here and there and everywhere…” for no reason.

  36. roro

    Happy birthday

    i’, from ’92
    difficult
but i love the music and kooky hairdo’s and fashion

  37. Skyla

My favorite line from an 80s movie?

Give me the child. Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen. For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great… YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ME!

    I am a Labyrinth fangirl =)

    Happy Birthday Shirley!

And thanks for the awesome interview and the chance to win Preloved!! (Fingers crossed. I am entering every contest to try and win this book. I WANTZ IT!)

    • Wendy Darling

Ah, Shirley is a Labyrinth fan too, Skyla, so you’ve definitely got to get your hands on this one. ;) What happens if you win more than one copy?! The mind boggles.

  38. Bonnie Regan

Happy Birthday Shirley!! Your vlog has made me even more excited to read your new book (if that was even possible!) And that cake? Looks delicious. :D

  39. Jessica Hilburn

I was a 90’s kid but the 80’s have always been close to my heart. I love 80’s music with all the glam rock and I love 80’s movies. Princess Bride, Breakfast club, etc..

  40. Amy

This is an awesome giveaway!! I don’t know if I can think of any specific movie quotes, by Labyrinth and The Princess Bride are like my favorite movies!! I will make a list of things that I loved though

    Legwarmers!!
    Sweatshirts with the cut neck
    80’s music!! All of it!!
    Side ponytails
    Snap bracelets and rubber bracelets

    Happy Birthday Shirley!!

    • Wendy Darling

Side ponytails! Legwarmers and cut sweatshirts! I totally forgot those, hah. Or I blocked them out of my mind. ;) So fun!!

  41. Book Sake

I added Preloved to my TBR list on Goodreads, looks good. So does the necklace. And the cake for that matter! Happy Bday Shirley!

    - Jessica @ Book Sake

  42. Mimi Valentine

Awww, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, (super sweet and utterly baking-tastic) SHIRLEY!! <3 If that's you in those pictures, you have to know that you're SO pretty and you've made me a million times hungrier all over again! Maybe you could write a recipe book as your next hit? Haha that's probably just my stomach speaking! x)

But it’s so amazing how Preloved sold out on the sight after the hit on Wendy’s blog, although I really don’t know why I would be surprised ;) Thanks so much for celebrating your birthday and book birthday here at TMG with us — I hope you have a FANTASTIC day! :) <3

    • Wendy Darling

Of course that’s the real Shirley in the photos, Mimi! I wish I could pretend it was me, but sadly, I think I’d be found out.

I don’t know that we can take all the credit for the book selling out, especially since it came back into stock so quickly! But it’s definitely a sought-after item for sure.

  43. Melliane

Happy birthday, it’s an amazing giveaway!

I’m from 89 so it’s difficult to really know. But ma favorite things are the songs. I loved the songs and it’s nice to listen to them from time to time.

  44. Juju at Tales of Whimsy.com

    What a lovely post.
    I love the pool party.
She’s making me crave tea by the pool.
    Great post.
    (not an entry)
BTW LOVE your blog friends are real friends button and that you too have grabbed Missie’s League of Ladies Against Captcha! :D

  45. Zoe

    Happy Birthday Shirley! ^__^

I am a 90’s kid but I have always loved the movie Labyrinth and its quirky quotes that make me smile everytime. If I had to choose one it would be these two since I quote them a lot in normal conversations (Yeah I get a lot of weird looks from doing this):

Jareth: You remind me of the babe.
    Goblin: What babe?
Jareth: The babe with the power.
    Goblin: What power?
    Jareth: The power of voodoo.
    Goblin: Who do?
    Jareth: You do.
    Goblin: Do what?
Jareth: Remind me of the babe.

Jareth: Well, what have we here?
    Hoggle: Oh, uh, nothin’.
Jareth: Nothing? Nothing? NOTHING? Nothing, tra la la?

    • Zoe

Wow, that is awesome. I am even more determined to read this book now. I also feel the urge to go watch Labyrinth again.

By the way I love your name Flannery.

  46. starryeyedjen

The Princess Bride is my all-time favorite movie, so I have a couple of quotes, teehee:

    Vizzini: HE DIDN’T FALL? INCONCEIVABLE.
Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Inigo Montoya: Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

:) Happy birthday, Shirley! Great giveaway!!!! :D

    • Wendy Darling

I love both those quotes, Jeannette! In a movie filled with so many great lines, those two are probably the most memorable ones. And “As you wish,” of course!

  47. thecodenameblue

Happy birthday, Shirley! It’s so nice of you to host a giveaway when it’s your birthday and you should be the one receiving something! Anyway, you’re looking gorgeous as always :) Have fun on your birthday!! You have those only once a year, after all!

Fashion fads from the 80’s – I think it was that awful blue eyeshadow, feathered hair, wide leg jeans (or did they start getting skinnier?) I remember these wedgie shoes with a wavy sole.

  49. papalbina

i don’t think i can choose only one quote… but i do my best xD there’re so many good movies from the 80’s *sigh*

let’s go for star wars V…

    Leia: “I love you”
    Han Solo: “I know”

  50. glass

I love Back to the Future, Dirty Dancing, When Harry Met Sally and Deads Poets Society.

Oh, my fav quote is fom When Harry met Sally:

“I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night.” :)

  51. Reynje

Oh, I love this post so much! Shirley is such a cutie :)

Of course, I can’t enter our own giveaway.. but all the same, I’d thought I’d share my favourite 80s thing – it’s Duckie dancing to Otis Redding in the film Pretty in Pink. I love that movie so much.

Can’t wait to find out who the lucky winner is…

  52. Shirley

Awwww HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHIRLEY<3 (haha, I love how we share the same name! It's the land of SHIRLEYS)

Ummm…I wasn’t born during the 80’s, and frankly, I don’t know much about that era. BUT I’m studying Blade Runner for school right now, and it happens to be an 80
    s movie soo…
“I don’t know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life – anybody’s life; my life.”

    • Wendy Darling

Ah, my husband’s favorite movie of all time. And as a result, I’ve seen it more times than I can count, hah. How fun that you’re studying it in school!

  53. Vanessa

My favorite memory from that era? The day I was born, of course! Er, I wouldn’t actually remember but… Yeah!

  54. Eunice

Oh my, I’m a 90’s kid. Haha! But I do know and like some few 80’s song – With Or Without You by U2, Time After Time Cyndi Lauper, Sweet Child ‘O Mine by Guns ‘N Roses. I’ve seen the movie E.T. too and Ghostbusters. I don’t remember any quotes though.

Happy Birthday, Shirley and awesome post and giveaway, Wendy!!

P.S. I actually did a little research on those songs and movies just to be sure they’re from 80’s. Haha! XD

    • Wendy Darling

Hah, I love a girl who does her research before commenting on a blog post! And I LOVE Cyndi Lauper. Thanks for stopping by, Eunice. :)

  55. Bettyxx

My favourite quote from The Breakfast Club (it’s a bit long)

‘Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did *was* wrong. But we think you’re crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us… In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain…

    Andrew Clark: …and an athlete…

    Allison Reynolds: …and a basket case…

    Claire Standish: …a princess…

    John Bender: …and a criminal…

Brian Johnson: Does that answer your question?… Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club. ‘

    BEST MOVIE EVER!
Lovely giveaway and Happy Birthday Shirley!

  56. Sonia

    Happy Birthday, Shirley ;-)

My favourite band from that era would be Air Supply. The first song I heard from them was Every Woman In The World in my relatives’ car. I actually have heard their songs before, but I knew their band name started from that time. So, this is my favourite band from that era. :-D

  57. Maree

    Happy Birthday Shirley!

My favourite quote is from Back to the Future:

    Doc: Alright then future boy,
who’s president of the United States
    in 1985?

    Marty: Ronald Reagan!

    Doc: Ronald Reagan? the actor!?
then who’s vice president, Jerry Lewis!?

I love Back to the Future :) Thanks for such a gorgeous post, you answered lots of my questions about the book

I’m totally obsessed with several musicals written in the 80s. I love Cats (1982) (I was in a production of it once), Les Miserables (1985) (I was in that twice), and Phantom of the Opera (1988) (which I haven’t been in… yet). I know all the words to all the songs by heart.

  59. Jasprit

Fab post Shirley and happy birthday! The end of the 80’s was a memorable time for me as thats when New Kids of the block came out with their song You got it (“the right stuff”) and it makes me all nostalgic that they’re doing a tour now with another fave band of mine the backstreet boys omg I sound so cheesy! Anyway thanks for the great giveaway Wendy, I may go off and listen to some songs by NKOTB! :)

    • Wendy Darling

Remember when THE SIXTH SENSE came out and everybody was like “Is that the NKOTB guy?!” And who’d have thought Marky Mark would go on to be an Oscar nominee? :)

    • Rachel

I loved him in the Sixth Sense, Wendy! I think he’s in Blue Bloods with Tom Selleck now, which I really enjoy (when I actually watch TV that is!)

    • Wendy Darling

I haven’t seen Blue Bloods yet, Rachel, but Donnie Wahlberg was on a short-lived show awhile back called BOOMTOWN which I LOVED. It was actually set in L.A., and was a show which showed different POVs of cops, lawyers, etc. involved in a specific mystery for each episode. It was really moody and kind of sad, I was really disappointed when it was cancelled. So much so I have the show on DVD.

  60. Joyous Reads

    Happy Birthday, Shirley! :)

I know iPods are the best thing since sliced bread but heck, I love those cassette tapes…and recording songs off the FM radio!

    Great giveaway, Miss Wendy!

  61. Maggie

    Favorite 80s fad/fashion:

    Snap bracelets
    Hypercolor shirts
    Crimping irons

    Favorite quote:

From the greatest show ever, The Cosby Show: “How ugly is he?”

    Happy birthday, Shirley!!

    • Wendy Darling

Okay, Maggie–I love all three of those fads you mentioned AND I love the Cosbys, too. I always loved the ones when Vanessa got in trouble, especially when she and her friends went to that concert without permission. Good times!

  62. Flannery (The Readventurer)

I’m pretty sure this is THE cutest thing I’ve ever seen on a blog. I’m so glad to see Shirley talking about her book in real life. (and with hot pink nails!) I’m quite jealous of her being in/near a pool though. *looks out at rain, as usual* And she answered several questions I had about the book. Just wonderful, all around. Thanks to both of you:)

    • Wendy Darling

I say we fly over there and lounge around Shirley’s pool, Flann! Can’t wait to see your interview with Shirley next week. :)

  63. Celine

Mermaids can breathe underwater and that’s what makes them so cool! I would love to be able to breathe underwater and explore the sea!

Awesome post, Wendy and Shirley! Happy birthday and thank you so much for the giveaway!

    • Wendy Darling

Ooo, Celine! I’m sorry, we forgot to update the Rafflecopter question you were supposed to answer, hah. Don’t worry, though, we’ll enter you into the contest anyway and the info is all fixed now. :)

  64. Vegan YA Nerds

Hoooray! Happy birthday, Shirley, thanks for inviting us to your pool party!

I know you’re trying to make me jealous with your kitty tea pot! ;)

    What a gorgeous necklace too!
