The Selection
by Kiera Cass
Reaction before reading this book: I know I may be a sucker for falling for this cover, but look at it! I totally want to go to that party.
Reaction after reading this book: I no longer want to go to this party.
Full disclosure: I did not read this entire book. I took notes for the first 88 pages, read to page 168, and then skimmed the rest. I think reading more than half the book qualifies as giving it a fair shot.
The Selection arrives with a gorgeous cover and interesting premise. What if a lottery allowed 35 teenage girls to compete for the hand of a handsome prince? I thought this might be a fun and fluffy read, so I pushed aside my initial misgivings about the names and pounced on the chance to read the ARC. Turns out, sometimes your gut is just trying to do its job, as I kept struggling with the book until I finally admitted that I didn't find a single aspect of this story that I enjoyed. Somehow I missed the early blurb that described this novel as a mash-up between the The Bachelor and The Hunger Games, which is unfortunate because the comparison to the television show is pretty spot-on. Mentioning it in the same breath as The Hunger Games is a travesty, however, since this book barely qualifies as a dystopian novel--and certainly the quality of the story, characters, themes, and writing don't come even close to comparing.
Here are some facts which may help you decide whether you want to read this book:
Character Names: Our main character's name is America Singer. Guess what she does. Her boyfriend's name is Aspen. Prince Charming's name is Prince Maxon Schreave, who must marry a "True Daughter of Iléa." Other names include Queen Amberly, King Clarkson, Tiny, Kriss, Marlee, Bariel, Gavril, Kamber, and Sosie.
Attempts to Make This Novel Dystopian: Sketchy caste system. Talk of provinces. Girls are required to wait until marriage to have sex. Infrastructure Committees. Occasional mentions of hunger and lack of makeup.
Writing: Very obvious protestations that are easily seen through. Juvenile dialogue. A lot of whispering to convey dramatic statements. A plethora of exclamation points.
Bachelor-like Elements: Contestants vying for a "perfect" guy. Appearance fees. Contracts. Gossiping. Sabotage. Tears. Eliminations. Television specials. Icky elements. (I was afraid early on that the book was headed into really tasteless territory since the girls are asked point-blank whether they're virgins (and have to sign contracts saying the Prince can demand anything he wants of them and they cannot refuse), but fortunately it doesn't get much more gross than that.) But no limos and no rose ceremonies! Booo.
Most Annoying Element of All: The story ends on a cliffhanger, as if there was so much going on in this one book, it could not be contained in a single volume.

Random Quotes:
Why did Mom have to push me so much? Wasn't she happy? Didn't she love Dad? Why wasn't this good enough for her?
"Please don't call me gorgeous. First my mom, then May, now you. It's getting on my nerves." By the way Aspen was looking at me, I could tell I wasn't helping my "I'm not pretty" case. He smiled.
Aspen was dressed in white. He looked angelic.
That was it. I slapped him. "You idiot!" I whisper-yelled at him. "I hate him! I loved you! I wanted you; all I ever wanted was you!"
"If you don't want me to be in love with you, you're going to have to stop looking so lovely."
*********************************************
So. Whether you'll enjoy this book depends on whether you find any of the above details appealing. If, like me, they make you want to pull out your hair, it may be best to either try this one out at the library first or just admire the pretty cover design from a safe distance.
Putting aside the fact that this probably would have worked better as a straightforward fairy tale without the pseudo-dystopian details, as well as the annoying focus on boys boys boys being the be-all and end-all of this book, the whole thing wasn't really a very enjoyable reading experience to me, not even as mindless entertainment. Every scene, every character, and every plot development was predictable and worse yet, a cliché, and the dialogue and machinations felt painfully juvenile throughout the entire story. I almost wish this were a middle grade novel, except that there are a few too many make out scenes for that. Plus I don't think I would have enjoyed this even at the age of 8.
As always, these kinds of books are just a matter of taste. All in all, I really don't have violent feelings about The Selection the way I do with such books as The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer or Elizabeth Miles' Fury, but I'm afraid I can't say that I found very much about it that was redeeming, either.

Sorry you didn't care for it, but thanks for your thoughts. I was looking forward to this, but now I'll be a bit more wary. Still love the cover, though.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! :)

So, gorgeous covers don't make for gorgeous stories? It's a lesson I thought I learned with hush, hush, but one that I keep forgetting. I think I might have ruptured my gut.
ReplyDeleteThe odd names thing might be something that could have overlooked, but even for how boy crazy I am, I've never been a fan of The Bachelor on TV so I doubt it would appeal to be in a book.
Aww shucks. So much for the lovely cover, eh? A PLETHORA OF EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...is never good. Fantastic review, Ms. Wendy :)
ReplyDeleteDamn, I thought this book was going to be amazing. I'm still going to read it, but I think I'll get it from the library or used instead of rushing out to buy it new. Those character names are awful and I hate the phrase "whisper-yelled."
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest review! I also LOVE the cover and will probably still try it out at some point due to curiousity.
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody! And hah, I totally understand the compulsion to still read this book, in spite of this review. A. You may enjoy it anyway. B. The cover is MESMERIZING. Should be interesting to compare notes down the road!
ReplyDeleteYour opening line about not wanting to go to that party anymore made me smile. Great honest review. Sorry it didn't work for you and thanks for the warning.
ReplyDeleteI kinda knew this was going to be a hot mess based on the main character's name alone. Some of the more annoying books I've read have characters with idiotic names...
ReplyDeleteNC
Truly Bookish
awww This sucks! It was a book I was really looking forward too! A few of the things you mentioned will bother me(whisper-yelled!) and a few will not(names). I will probably pick it up at the library and just not buy it. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteWell, hmm... I just received my copy in the mail the other day, and I was really excited. Now I'm not as pumped. lol But I'll admit that "The Bachelor" (or, more accurately, "The Bachelorette") is one of my guilty pleasure shows. But too bad there aren't any rose ceremonies! That's the best part ;)
ReplyDeleteBummer! I REALLY had high expectations for this book with it's gorgeous cover and amazing concept but now it seems to be a bore! I think I'm going to pass on this one for now. Thanks for the honest review!
ReplyDeleteJaskirat~SeeitORreadit
Bummer!'' ikr hoping it was good
ReplyDeletetnx 4 sharing your thoughts
You gave such a bad review for a book you didn't even read all the way though??? Well, I did read the entire book and it was absolutely, positively, wonderful!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, no! Isn't that the worst when you've really anticipated a good read? I'm glad to know your thoughts, though. I can officially pull it from my TBR list. I have TOO many books on their to invest so much time on one I probably won't be into! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHah, thanks Juju. I probably didn't even need to write anymore after that.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, you might like this more than I did for sure. But yes, I'd definitely recommend leafing through it first to see if it's something you want to invest dollars in.
Truly Bookish: same here.
KM, I saw a couple of seasons of The Bachelor too! And sadly, I couldn't even call this a guilty pleasure.
Thanks Jaskirat and roro, I appreciate your comments.
Anonymous, I'm glad you enjoyed the book more than I did. You're entitled to your opinion, I"m entitled to mine.
I totally agree, Ashley--there's so little time to read all the good books out there without spending time on the bad ones.
Ouch. I half expected this book to be badbut I was sort of into the cover and was planning on giving it a go. Thank you for going through that so I didn't have to.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this book and await for the next one with anticipation. But, like you say, I'm entitled to my opinion and you to yours. I do hope that people don't dismiss a good read based only on your opinion though, it was well worth the read. Are you an Author?
ReplyDeleteTOWANDA!
ReplyDeleteYou know the rest, Wends.
Oh no. I'm not sure what made me hesitate about this book, but I was already on the fence. There's just something about the plot that seems a little...thin? Not quite my taste.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely pass for now though, if for no other reason than I don't want to get involved in yet another series, with yet another cliffhanger. My memory can't keep up! Thank you for that warning.
No problem, Kendra. I rely on my GoodReads and blogging friends for advice on books to read and books to pass as well, so I'm happy to return the favor.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, it's very hard to have a conversation with someone who seems to be very insistent upon making sure her opinion is known on someone else's review. You seem very invested in this book, so I'd suggest doing your part to promote the book on your own terms.
And no problem, Small Review. I had hesitations over this one, too, and it's clear that I should have listened to my gut. Oh, well, on to the next one!
Anonymous: I'm getting ready to dismiss this book thanks to the rude, annoying people who does nothing to promote this book, except being a pest on someone else's blog.
ReplyDeleteSounds like anyone you know? Take a long hard look in the mirror.
You're doing your "ZOMG FaVoRiTe bOoK EVA" a great disservice. Kudos, kid.
Now, be a darling and write your own review, elsewhere.
oh lord.... I'll be get back to read the actual review to get over the shock of 1 star only *crushed*
ReplyDeleteCover art tricks again! I swear, I'm so hesitant of nice covers because they always seem tocontain utter crap. (Seriously!). Thanks for your review. I'll be staying away from this one.
ReplyDeleteBtw, this is FREEBIRD. ;)
great review! i'm still going to test-read this book because i'm curious about it... and i think HarperTeen is sending me a copy.
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I was always weary of this book when I came across it on GR, but now you've confirmed my suspensions.Anything that compares itself to the Bachelor is a no-go for me.
ReplyDeletePS I too hate when people overuse exclamation marks. I just want to tell the characters to CALM DOWN.
My comments are not about promoting The Selection. What caught my eye was a bad review on a book, given by a person that didn't even read the book all the way though and that people give that credibility. That's all I was saying. I'm going away now and not coming back because I'm having a hard time having a conversation with someone who is a Disney Character.
ReplyDeleteYou certainly should go away. It is her honest opinion about the book, which if you read her review, she read more than half and skimmed the rest. (basically, she read plenty to know it wasn't for her) Just because one person doesn't like a book does not mean others won't. Not everyone will like every book. Deal with it. I am sure everyone will appreciate if you do go away and don't come back.
DeleteAt least Wendy is a real name and doesn't hide behind "anonymous". Get over yourself. We're supposed to take your thoughts seriously?
DeleteWell, personally I think Wendy Darling is a much better pen name and avatar then "Anonymous"... In fact, I'm going to a Disney costume party soon and I was seriously considering going as Wendy Darling, I'm now going as Professor Porter from Tarzan (on a completely unrelated note haha!)
DeleteYes, do that. Go away.
ReplyDeleteYou certainly didn't have any problems with her being a Disney character when you came here to make a clown of yourself, and I'd rather talk to Wendy Darling, than a faceless anonymous.
Really, anonymous, get a face and a name before you make stupid comments about someone's choice of pen name and avatar.
Also, you'd do well in reading the whole review, she clearly explains why she didn't finish it, it's hard to take your comment seriously, when you can't even read a review or give a supported opinion of how is this blogger wrong about the book, so far, you couldn't manage to do that.
This review explains why this book was not for her, how many pages she skimmed through and what she didn't like. I'm sorry your pathetic inner fan girl can't handle a negative review of her favorite book, but that's life.
Get over yourself.
Without negative reviews positive reviews would have no meaning.
ReplyDeleteNo one ever seems to remember this?
Indeed. Thanks, Stephanie.
DeleteThe book DOES have a lovely cover, sorry to hear that the contents didn't live up to it. Looks like I won't be reading this one!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I read your review! Those names... ick... Whisper-yelled??? Are you kidding me? This is going off my TBR list. Thanks for saving me the money, and thanks for your honest thoughts!
ReplyDeleteNew Follower!
- Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl
I'm sorry this book wasn't for you, it's so difficult sometimes. Too bas because I really like the cover lol.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't mind this analogy, but watching an author bully you is akin to watching some fifth grader knock over the sweet kindergartener who brings cookies for her teacher and the rest of the class. Your reviews are always so fair and balanced. When you don't enjoy a book, you take the time to explain why, and I've never seen you get snarky or overly critical.
ReplyDeleteYour review convinced me to take this book off my to-read list, but the author's behavior is enough to make me blacklist her altogether.
*hugs* Keep doing your thing, Darling. You're so much better than her.
Thank you, dear. I appreciate your lovely sentiment, and I appreciate the hug more than I can say.
DeleteI love your review! Honestly, while the cover is gorgeous, that much frou-frou scared me off so I wasn't planning on reading it anyway...your review has sealed the deal for me, only because the storyline isn't one that I would be interested in. Girls competing for a guy? No, thanks, no matter how much I love dystopia!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest review. :)
But.. but.. the cover Wendy! *sniff*
ReplyDeleteLOOOOL!! I love your review, Wendy!! <3 The cover really IS pretty, but it sucks that it was one of those looks-can-be-deceiving things. :( The whole comparison to The Bachelor made me grin though LOL! Now that I think about it, they do sound a lot alike: multiple girls competing for one guy (which makes me frown). And the funny thing is that I never planned on reading this book before, but now I'm kind of intrigued! x)
ReplyDeleteI always love your reviews because their awesomely written, fun to read, and totally and completely honest! We all love you, Wendy, so please don't ever stop writing them! :) <3
Thank you for your reviews.
ReplyDeleteWell the cover looks really pretty. Oh well. Then again I don't really buy books based on covers (not all the time, anyway). Still. Too bad.
ReplyDeleteAnd for what it's worth, I love reading all your reviews, even if it's for books that I never had an intention of reading because they're really not my thing. I love it when reviews are totally honest, AND when a reviewer posts both positive and negative reviews. :)
Another case of trying to cover up a not so great book with a flashy beautiful dress cover. The quotes definitely show the writing is a bit juvenile for my taste. Thanks for steering me clear of this one!
ReplyDeleteI love Wendy Darling!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Timothy. :) It's nice to have a fellow children's book lover out there waving hello.
DeleteI have to say Wendy, when I saw the cover I was like; Oh WOW, I want that dress! The cover is powerful enough to make me want to read this book, and lately I don't read many YA any more; I do buy YA for my little sister so I'm always looking for good books. I love your reviews because they feel honest, it is your opinion and your reactions to the material, you are obviously entitle to them. But after seeing the behavior of the author and her agent I will not support it. I'm seriously dumbstruck by this whole situation.
ReplyDeleteI'm still pretty dumbstruck too, Mel. I'm lucky that I am well-equipped to stand up for myself and I have a vocal circle of friends, but it's really sad to think that this could happen to a new blogger or reviewer, who might be intimidated by this sort of behavior. I hope this is the last we'll see of the drama for awhile.
DeleteWendy, I loved your review. I had never heard about the book or the author before this, and was actually quite intrigued. I might have even wanted to read it - even if you didn't like it - but when I saw how the professionals behind the book have treated you, I decided I have better ways to spend my money, and far too many books on my TBR list.
ReplyDeleteKeep on writing your reviews, you know your fellow readers love both the reviews and you :)
Thank you for your kind words, Linda. One of the few good things to come out of all this is hearing from so many friends, familiar and new. :) I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to comment, and I appreciate your support.
DeleteEep! Honestly I was never really interested in this one based on the cover. I've been burned so many times by a good looking cover I think I've learned my lesson. lol
ReplyDeleteI think the names would bother me too.
I really appreciate your thoughts! You gave the elements you didn't enjoy so that people can decide for themselves whether or not those specific things turn them off or not. I'm sure a lot of people will still choose to read the book after your review!
ReplyDeleteI think I'll be passing on it. I was in major cover love too, but the things you talked about are definitely things that would bother me too.
Wendy,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy visiting the blog and always find your reviews go be fair.
I had sort of high hopes for this one, but based on your review, k would probably pass.
Thank you for you honest review. I thought this looked like a good book, but also had my reservations too. I will see when it gets closer to publication whether I want to read it or not. There are a lot of books on my list that are higher up than this one. I do love the cover, but pretty packaging isn't everything. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest Review and I too have been burned my pretty looking book covers. I agree the names thing would make it irritating.
ReplyDeleteAnother one bites the dust!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your honesty, Wendy! I know I can always rely on your reviews for just that. I was kind of on the fence with this one based on the synopsis. Sounds like I had good reason to be.
ReplyDelete"If you don't want me to be in love with you, you're going to have to stop looking so lovely."
ReplyDeleteThat's true love, right there, ladies and gentlemen. Love that won't survive chicken pox, pregnancy or an accident that leaves her scarred. Isn't that what we're all looking for?
okay ill be honest, even after i read up on all the drama surrounding your review i still considered reading the selection. that cover is like eyeball crack, but your review was a pretty damn good analysis. i am trying to stay away from YA romances where the generic idea of boys is the focus. love - yes. mindless boy chasing - no. so thank you for the heads up.
ReplyDeleteNo problem--I'm glad the review was helpful, Rebekah.
DeleteI read up on the drama surrounding this review (I HATE drama on reviews) and sorry that this didn't live up to the hype! I'll probably still read it even based on your review but I'll make a point of not buying it straight away just in case :)
ReplyDeleteIt's always disappointing when a book's premise (and COVER) seems so interesting but it doesn't live up to the hype for you! I didn't end up loving Under the Never Sky as much I thought I would, but things happen :)
Anyway, excellent review!!
Wendy when people mess with you I think it makes me angrier when they mess with anyone else. You are always so diplomatic and generally a sweetheart that it's just uncalled for. You're one of the most balanced and fair reviewers I know.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, Cassi--it means a lot to me that you've been such a great friend throughout all this. And if a journalism major thinks I behaved ethically in this case, I am comfortable that I did the best I could!
DeleteHmm...the parts you pointed out sound like they would annoy me as well, so I'm not sure if The Selection is for me. I'm on the fence at the moment!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I think it's totally reasonable to write a review of a book you didn't finish, especially since you specifically noted that you were writing your review from having only read X amount of pages. That way, your readers can take that into consideration when reading your review. It happens to a lot of us.
Thanks Natalie. I'm always surprised when I see people get upset over DNF reviews. I find a lot of value in those, too; and the funny thing is, if I hadn't admitted it that I didn't finish this book, I don't think anyone would have been the wiser. Particularly because the last two books I pulled are from near the end of the book.
DeleteOuch! I think I'll be admiring this book at a distance then. I'm a sucker for gorgeous covers though, so let's see how long will it take for me to resist this book. Great review, Wendy! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it is absolutely within reason to review a book that you did not finish. If it was crap for the first half, it is not very likely that it will suddenly become a 5 star read in the second half. Maybe if authors would spend more time editing and revising than tweeting ridiculousness with their boneheaded agents, more people would want to read the ENTIRE book. I had planned on reading this anyway since our taste is similar but not always the same, but after what happened, there isn't any way I would support this book.
ReplyDeleteI adore you, Donna. Thank you so much.
DeleteHaving read your review and then read the incredibly unprofessional reaction to it from two 'professionals' who really should know better, I have to say that I've no intention of picking up this book, and most likely any future books by the same author.
ReplyDeleteI have no time for bullies. But kudos to you, you've handled yourself with grace and dignity. Something Cass and Roth haven't managed.
Thanks so much, Claire. I was pretty taken aback by this lack of professionalism, but I appreciate that so many of my fellow bloggers have responded with such incredible messages of support.
Deleteugh, not again... another pretty cover ruined by mediocrity, pity *sigh*
ReplyDeleteseriously?! Aw man i was really looking forward to this coming out!! So sad when something that looks so good flops. :(
ReplyDeleteOh no's I was really looking forward to this one, but I don't like the lines that you pulled from the book at all. Bugger!
ReplyDelete- Jessica at Book Sake.
Oh no. I have never heard of this book before now but if I just saw it and read the summary I would have been intrigued. Now I'm intrigued but mostly to skim it and have a good laugh. Those quotes are freaking hilarious. >.<
ReplyDeleteI'm still definitely going to check this one out (from the library), but from your details I am wary that I will find it equally grating. I had the exact reaction to the name "America Singer" as I did to Under the Never Sky's Aria...my gag reflex was triggered. Also as someone who cannot stand shows like The Bachelor, I don't have high expectations, but I'm just so excited there's a book out there with a good reason to have a girl with a ball gown on the front!
ReplyDeleteI had been looking forward to this as well, but your opinions tend to be close to mine, so I think I'll reconsider. The behavior of the agent has also convinced me that if I ever do pick it up, it will be from the library instead of the bookstore. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteOMG! it sounds like this book totally totally sucks!! >_< SNIFF! I was (still am) so excited about this book. I guess I'll keep reading more reviews about it. Yet, I had no idea there were dystopian elements on it. I was so sure it was a fairy-tale love story and super cute and lovely. Something lyrical and heart-wrenching at the same time but with a beautiful happy ending. O_O the cover totally gives a very different idea then! what the hell!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest review =S. Yet, I still hope to see great reviews about it so I can read it. Sniff!
★Dazzling Reads★
It always annoys me when books are compared to The Hunger Games (especially when they're nothing like it, and it sounds like this one is far from similar).
ReplyDeleteVery intriguing review. Thanks for your honest thoughts, :)
New follower here...And although I was REALLY looking forward to reading this (oh, that cover <3), but after seeing all the drama that comes with an honest review...not so much. Thank you for writing an honest review! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your comment, Randi. :) I appreciate your support. Drama indeed.
DeleteAck, I mean to comment on your review earlier but didn't get a chance to... Thanks so much for the detailed review! I read about some of the drama on Goodreads and couldn't believe some of the comments the author and her friends were making because of one review. Jeeesh, how are they going to react once more of them start coming in?
ReplyDeleteAnyways, based on everything you said and the short teasers you included, my interest in reading the book has dropped. The cover may be gorgeous but it's not worth spending the money on if the story isn't as great...
I'm going to keep an eye out for more reviews on this one, just in case, but its lost some of the appeal it once had. Thanks Wendy!
It will be very interesting to see what happens when more reviews roll in for sure, Midnight Bloom. But if you're still interested in the book, maybe try it out as a library read before you decide to buy. Cheers!
DeleteSo, I apparently live under a rock and had no awareness of all the controversy surrounding your review and the subsequent reaction to it, but my goodness, so much drama!
ReplyDeleteWhile I actually really enjoyed this book, it was a quick read for me and I just had fun blowing through it, I don't quite understand why your review caused such negative outcry. I, as a reader and as someone who buys a lot of books, actually like reading reviews where the opinion differs from my own. It almost never causes me to not pick up a book because you know what? It's one person's opinion. And mine may differ. In fact, I usually like to get to that book faster to see how I'll react myself:)
How boring would it be if we all had the exact same things to say about books? There'd really be no need to write down our thoughts at all at that point. I'm sorry this turned into such a big, nasty situation for you!
Thanks so much for your support, Jenny. I value reading a wide variety of reviews, even if I don't necessarily agree with them, so I always find this sort of reaction shocking. After all the author meltdowns that have happened this year, I sincerely hope this is the last we'll see for some time.
DeleteI appreciate your thoughtful comment more than I can say.
Keep doing what you're doing Wendy - I love reading your reviews! I always find them very detailed, thorough and honest!
ReplyDeleteApparently I was living under the same rock as Jenny, and this just came to my attention now (saw it on Goodreads).
Don't you hate that this keeps happening in the YA community?!
Anyhow, I was already on the fence with this one. Wasn't so sure it would be my kinda book, but was sucked in by that cover (last time this happened to me was with that awful angel book...What was it?...HALO!) Ugh!
I'll give this one a miss.
Ugh *head-desk* I just read the whole debacle on Goodreads. I'm still kind of interested in reading the book... kind of. I'll see. I'm so sorry for all the drama--you don't deserve it, and it certainly wasn't warranted based on an entirely sensible review.
ReplyDeleteMy best friend hates books I give her after singing the praises of all the time. What's the big deal if we have different opinions? Basically: what Jenny said.
Seriously, thanks for an honest review. I'm on the fence about reading it, but I'm kind of moving it down the TBR ;)
Just to be clear, you are still a bitch.
ReplyDeleteReally??!?!? Yeah, and this comment should be taken seriously since it was written by "Anonymous". Get a life!
DeleteReally?? And this post should be taken seriously WHY?! I mean, clearly, if you are gonna hide behind an anonymous account you must be a coward or something.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous. That is so disrespectful and rude it goes off the scale.
ReplyDelete@Wendy, you're doing a great job, keep the honest reviews coming. You shouldn't be getting abuse for expressing your own opinion on a book.
Thanks so much, Magic. You'd think after three weeks, people would have found better things to do with their time.
DeleteI really appreciate your support.
And just to be clear, Anonymous, you're still a mediocre.
ReplyDeleteKeep helping yourself to vulgar insults to get your point (<- do you even have one?) across.
Awww...another intelligent comment from "Anonymous". Thank you. Gosh, you really get us thinking.
ReplyDeleteShe's showering us with her class, again.
ReplyDeleteSheri, I bet none of us can trump Anonymous's eloquent homily, full of rhetoric and command of language.
Motivational and inspirational, that's what it is.
First of all...Thank you for your honest review.
ReplyDeleteI'll admit the first part about attending the party...I laughed out loud.
Secondly, I refuse to read this book for two reasons. 1) Your review shed some light on some aspects that would drive me absolutely batty! It honestly sounds ridiculous. I really won't waste my time on it. 2) I refuse to even open a book that has such negative press surrounding it due to the behavior of the "professionals" that got this book published. I am super proud of you for standing your ground. If all reviews were good reviews...how on earth would I know what to read?
So thank you!
-Em @ Sash & Em
Thanks so much, Em--I appreciate your taking the time to stop by and comment. It's kind of unbelievable this is still going on, but the support from friends (new and old!) has been very much appreciated.
DeleteI've been reading all these comments and although I really, really liked The Selection I can't believe that Anonymous said so many horrible things to you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I don't know what's wrong with him/her. Keep doing your thing.
ReplyDeleteI know I am new to your page, but how completely out of line Anonymous is being with his/her comments seriously..I am very sorry you had to deal with such an ass of a person. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, they have to get over it. Just keep doing your thing =]
ReplyDeleteHA HA HA HA HA…..This is GREAT! Hi Wendy, it’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I, too, found you via Goodreads and came to check out the controversial comments by “Anonymous”. I think what tickles my funny bone the most is that my 18 year old daughter behaves more maturely than this supposed adult. Her February 4th comment actually had me laughing out loud. Mean people used to piss me off, now they just make me giggle.
ReplyDeleteMs. Cass, I will never purchase this book for my collection due specifically to the catty and immature reactions of your peers. With friends like that I think I’ll stick with my teenaged children’s angst, thank you very much. Less drama and more ass-woopin’.
I was sososo looking forward to this book, but you're not the first person to tell me this book was such a disappointment. I had huge expectations for it, and I'm afraid I'd end up hating it even more because it failed to live up to them... Perhaps, I'll read this through the library. Not yet sure.
ReplyDelete— Asher
It just teaches you, don't judge a book by its cover. Loved your review, i'm not so good at negative one because they turn into rants but no ones been so offended by one on my blog - as of yet :)

Hi Wendy,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to add my support. When I read your review over on Goodreads, I actually thought to myself how much I liked it. It got to the point and managed to be entertaining along the way. I appreciate that when I read a review and hope my reviews will evolve into that as well. Anyone (author, agent, lay-person) who puts down someone for writing an honest review not only needs a serious lesson in manners, but obviously has some growing up to do (and some self-esteem issues to work on). I'm taking the Selection off my TBR pile and hope the author and co. learn from this experience. Thanks -- I'm a new follower and look forward to reading more reviews!
Laura
Seems like this book is a book you can particularly like or dislike. Heard some mixed reviews about it, but I guess it's about preference. I haven't read the book, but I guess my thoughts would be similar to you, if I had read it. From the synopsis itself, I already know that The Selection is not my type of dystopian fiction. Not sure if I'll read it in the future, but I shall see
ReplyDeleteLOVE the cover. Its gorgeous and eye catching and like you, i totally wanted to go to that party. I'm guilty of choosing books by their covers from time to time - like wine. Sometimes it works, but when it doesn't, it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, that aside from the atrocious behavior from that agent (who by the way, I instantly ran to make sure I'd never queried because OMG!) this line alone makes me want to avoid the book: "If you don't want me to be in love with you, you're going to have to stop looking so lovely."
I laughed out loud when I read that in your review, and my thoughts went like this: Oh phew! And here I was hoping you loved me for my MIND and my HEART, not my looks. LOL! What!? Seriously? Dying!
One day, when I'm looking at my own published novel, I hope you will review it - whether you loved it, hated it, or wanted to strangle it. You are honest in your reviews, and *most* of us in the world of fiction appreciate that!
Great review Wendy Darling! As always!
ReplyDeleteI fall victim to beautiful covers but also rave reviews from fellow bloggers and wonder WTH sometimes. This one seems spot on to me though and for the most part you and I have shared some of the same thoughts on books so I trust your opinion. However, if I'm going to read a book I'm going to read it regardless of the reviews. I never had any desire to read this one. My niece wants to read it after meeting the author at RT 2012. She said it sounded interesting. But who knows...she might like it or she might not.
OH btw, my aunt's name is America and she's in her 80's. So some names are not too far fetched. LOL. I didn't take offense, just sayin'. I also know a lady with the last name Singer. I know what you mean though.
Keep doing your thing because you do it well. If people don't want to read negative reviews then they should simply stay off your blog and others who might post a negative. It's all pretty sad.

Hi.
ReplyDeleteI know this is way too late that it being in late June, but I have to say that the Author was really much like a child in the way she reacted to your opinion. It looks to me Cass worries too much (no, scratch that). She seems to be wrapped up in a cocoon so tightly, that Cass forgot that the world was not filled with "Cass Clones". ( I apologize if this is all crass but I have no other way to describe the events)
Reading this blog, I felt you were indeed much of a professional than any other I have read so far. (I am new to all of this)
I took to heart your opinion and added it to my own and realized just after the fact I undoubtly should not have bought the book. But alas, I realized too late. :) But I stilled enjoyed the book as a fast read.
Wendy, I enjoyed reading your blog and indeed agree with many you should keep blogging. I seem to be slow in opinions and I felt childish when thinking on how I, for most of my life, just picked up a book and read without thinking. That lead to me picking bad choices more than good, especially now thinking of The Selection.
Silly thing is, I cannot seem to part with the book. Maybe its me being a kid when full well I am an adult.
I apologize for not have realizing earlier. I am sorry that such things happen like this event to any blogger out there and you mostly.
I support you 100% of the way even if our opinions clash. :)
Hi Wendy, I am your Goodreads friend from when I joined Goodreads - nearly 3 years. You have always given honest reviews. Although I cannot agree with your opinion all the time, I respect your ratings and opinions so much. It really does not seem worth to waste the time for this book, especially when someone so impolite and so-called "professionals" has written it.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that I was not there to support you, when that author gave you such a hard time. I was not so active in Goodreads as before, so I missed it somehow..so sorry you have to face all this, Wendy. And we will always be at your side, Wendy!
I wonder if most if the people commenting here are the intended reader of the book. Just a thought but as a high school teacher I read a lot of YA just to keep up with my teenage students. They loved this book. So while I can respect that the blog author didn't like the book personally, I think the review would have been more helpful if it had been directed to the intended audience.
ReplyDeleteI liked the book. Would I recommend it to my friends? Maybe as a quick summer read....
Would I recommend it to my students and youth group at church....a resounding YES....
So I guess what I am saying is that it is more helpful to read a review if you have the same interest as the reviewer....i would hate for a 15 yr old to not get this book because her mom read this review.....
Reading the selection and expecting anything other than teenage romance is crazy....
Adults should read YA with a softer approach and remember who it is written for....
I am already seeing Team Aspen on a lot if notebooks and the CW just picked it up as a series...just sayin....
I know this is months later and you won't see this, but I am sick and tired of this view of YA books. Just because I am a teenager does not mean I want something that is nothing more than a poorly written love triangle among cardboard characters. As a matter of fact, I would be happier with no romance at all. YA should be written for teenagers yes, but writing for teenagers does not mean you dumb it down: it means you write what teenagers want to read. That often means teenaged characters doing theings we can imagine ourselves doing, but that doesn't mean poor writing and poor storybuilding. A YA book can be intricate with realistic characters. No, let me rephrase that, a YA book should be intricate with realistic characters. The quality of writing should not suffer.
DeleteEveryone seems to have gotten this idea that you should cut YA books some slack for being ridiculous and badly written because, well, they're for teenagers. As a teenager, I can tell you, I despise that view. Not only is it an insult to my intelligence, but it makes it ever harder for me to find good-quality YA books, because no one thinks it's necessary for a YA book to be well-written.
There seems to be a distinction in many people's minds between a good YA book and a good book. A good YA book is simply a good book written for a YA audience. If an adult looks at this and says that the characters are flat, the writing is terrible, and there is no world-building, he or she is right. And that means it's not a well-written book, YA or otherwise. It doesn't mean no one will enjoy it, but it does mean it's not good YA, and people whould be just as critical of it as an adult book of the same quality.
And just so you know, this view isn't because I've "outgrown" YA literature. I felt this way when I was 12 and I feel this way now, at 16 1/2.
Hi Wendy!
ReplyDeleteOn a weird note, I stumbled across this because of the "scandal."
Bad side? I found a bit more negativity about the world of blogging.
Good side? I discovered the ingenious reviewing of Wendy Darling c:
While I do understand how a reader may have been put off by such a book, I actually enjoyed it a lot. I don't usually judge a book by it's dialogue (although some bits in the story were cringe-worthy now that I see the quotes you pulled out). And as much as I love beautiful covers, I like the darker ones better, and don't get a book based on its cover. Usually. A major reason why I liked this so much may have been because I'm a teen, without much of what people call "life experience," or because I read so much YA "fluff" as opposed to Adult with depth.
On a note not really related to The Selection, I like blogs with negative reviews with content, and so I shall stick my email address into the email subscription box c:
I was on the verge of buying this book and Thank God I didn't... Doesn't look like it has much substance.
ReplyDeleteHey Wendy, I'm a follower on goodreads.
ReplyDeleteThank you for writing this review. I hate to say it, but I think I'll still give it a chance. Even though I agree with a lot of your reviews, I may not have the exact same taste as you. Still iffy about reading it, but this lowered my expectations. Thanks again!
Kendall, it's up to you if you read this book--it makes no difference to me whatsoever. I find it strange that you feel the need to tell me so on my review a year after it was published, however, since if you are a follower of mine on GoodReads you are probably aware of the horrible things that have happened to me because of this review. It's like telling someone who's gotten food poisoning at a restaurant hey thanks for the review, but I plan on eating there anyway.
DeleteI picked this book up because of the cover.. and I struggled to get through it, because I wanted to keep giving it a chance.. big mistake. How does this book even qualify as a distopian novel? It seems exactly like the Bachelor to me. I wouldn't recommend this book.. to anyone.
ReplyDeleteI just want to say you are entirely right about this book, and I think it's really lame that the author and agent went to such extents. It really goes to show how stupid and egoistical some people are.
ReplyDeleteI just had read a review from someone who loved, loved this book, but I was incredulous, so I was glad to see quite the opposite from you. will save my precious reading time for something else. http://kristinehallways.blogspot.com
